View Full Version : Absorbing the baby?

This goes back to my first pregnancy of the year. I was about 8 weeks along and I started bleeding. I cried for a few hours when I noticed, but made sure I was strong for when husband came home. I knew what was happening and definately didn't want to have my child while sitting in the emergency room. I really didn't want to go. Husband made me go to make sure everything was okay. After waiting for what seemed like forever, the nurse came in and told me that my cervix was still closed and it was possible that it was just temporary, it didn't look like I was miscarrying, and to keep my OB appointment for the following day, no need to stay in the hospital to wait for the ultrasound. We so got our hopes up...

The next day I went to the OB appt. and told the doctor that I had been bleeding since yesterday and so they brought in an ultrasound and couldn't see anything. Because I wasn't that far along, they sent me down to have a vaginal ultrasound, in which they said that they would call me with the results. Finally at about 4:30 I called, it was a Friday, and asked for my results, they said that no one was there to tell me the results and that I could call on Monday. I yelled at the lady " So I have to wait until Monday to know if I'm miscarrying?" Nonetheless, I recieved a call about a half an hour later, in which a nurse said that they didn't see anything in the ultrasound. About a week later, the doctor called me and said that sometimes it happens and the body absorbs the embryo (fetus?).

To make a longer story short, I just wanted to know if anyone has had this happen to them. So many people here have passed their little ones, and I haven't seen anything on this type of miscarriage. Any info?

I'm very sorry for your loss, Mama. :Hug

Yes, I have heard of that happening. I tried to find the site for you. I'll keep looking and PM you if I find it.

It could have been a blighted ovum. In that scenerio the baby doesn't develop, but the placenta tissue and everything else does, giving off pregnancy hormones.

I am very sorry for your loss.

So, if it were a blighted ovum, I wouldn't bleed that much, as I didn't. You would still pass the placenta and whatever else though, right? I didn't get to see anything, ie the baby, as I was going the next day to my first OB appointment. A blighted ovum would last 8 weeks though? I'll try to get more info about it thanks.

I'm so sorry you had this happen! I recently had an ectopic pregnancy and my body also reabsorbed the embryo. In my case I was happy about that, because it meant that I didn't need any drugs or surgery.
Did they check your beta levels?

I'm not sure if they checked any levels. I was really upset when I had to call the doctor's office and they told me that I would have to wait until Monday for any results. I pretty much said f#*! this hospital and I will never go back to that OB department. I only went there because that is where my son was delivered and wanted to have next one delivered by same dr. I ended up going to a different hospital with next preg, and the doctor I had delivered my son now worked there. I guess that also worked out for the better.

I don't know what kind of tests they might have performed, but I wish I would have called them back (they called about 3 weeks later) as maybe they could have told me something was wrong with me that they could have fixed, and perhaps I wouldn't have had a stillborn 10 days ago. Maybe I'll get results from this time, and won't have a problem when I get preg the next time.

Thanks for your reply,
Mary
