My midwife suggested I make shakes with protein powder since natural sources of protein are so unappealing to me this time around. Have any of you tried these? Any thoughts about this stuff as a meal replacement?

I got a huge jar of whey protein powder at Walmart and have been using it to make smoothies - milk, vanilla yogurt, wheat germ, frozen fruit and a scoop of the protein powder. It tastes good (the powder is vanilla flavor) and adds 20 grams of protein to the smoothie!! I've also made smoothies with milk, protein powder and a package of chocolate instant breakfast mix for a treat. And you can add the powder to other things, too (I put a scoop into the last batch of pancakes I made) for extra protein. I'm not using it to replace food, but to boost my protein intake since I knew I wasn't getting anywhere near 80-100 grams a day.

Plady,
I second the use of protein powder - I am a vegetarian and try to drink a shake w/a cup of the powder, some soymilk, some fruit and ice every day. It is such a treat!! I also knew that I could never meet my protein goals with the foods I eat.
I got mine at Whole Foods, just a big canister of the white stuff. Love that instant breakfast too!! Every morning it's all I have time for as I run out to the door for work with a toddler. He drinks some of "mommy's milkshake" too.

I'm going to have to start doing this b/c I just got diagnosed with gallstones and I can't eat any fat :( so lots of my protein sources are now off-limits. I can only eat so much skinless boneless chicken breast and nonfat yogurt...there is NO WAY I am eating 80-100g of protein a day. I'd be lucky to get 40 right now :(
