hey all-- my husband and i are considering moving to weisbaden and taking up civilian jobs at their military base; i wanted to see if anyone has had babies while being in weisbaden and what the hospitals are like on base? do you know if we are required to use only facilities on base or can we go off base and is that covered by insurance? i am interested in water birthing with a midwife and have no idea where to start when it comes to looking for this; i would appreciate any information!!
thanks--palma

Palma,
The best place to start would be to contact the English speaking LLL groups in Germany. Almost all of them are military affiliated, and could give you valuable info on insurance, birthing, hospitals etc.

My homebirth was covered by Tricare, but they aren't always. It will depend on a variety of factors (not the least of which is the mood of the person approving your paperwork). If you can get a referral off base for care (because they're understaffed, for example), it should be covered 100% with no hassle.

Here's the link:
http://www.lalecheliga.de/index.htm
Click on the 'English area' located on the left side.
Let me know if it doesn't work. I have another channel through which I can get some info, and I'll let you know if I find out anything with that.
