Hello ladies I am Alicia. I have been lurking here and posting on the UC board. We are having another baby in February and we are hoping for our 1st homebirth. All of our past babies have been born in the hospital, with little satisfaction felt on my end when it was all said and done. I am a Type II diabetic so I feel as though my pregnancies and births are treated like some sort of medical experiment more then a natural life process.

Hubby and I are both in nursing school, and after he successfully delivered our last little girl with the Dr right over his shoulder I have him almost 100% convinced to assist me at home. He is highly comforted by a brand new freestanding ER that was built less then 1/4 mile from our home, just in case a dire emergency occurs.

Our only problem is that we are considered untouchable by local homebirth midwives. With the diabetes and the harsh ways some midwives have been treated in Ohio, the risks that the midwife might somehow get in trouble with my birth is just to high for them to feel comfortable with, which I 100% respect.

I am left with wondering what I should do. I know my husband and I will do fine, but I really feel as though extra hands are necessary....just in case of an emergency or if my hubby just needs a break. Any suggestions????

ALicia

How do you feel about hiring a doula or asking a like-minded friend to help support you and DH? Most doulas wouldn't do anything medical-related like a midwife would, but could help you with comfort measures and being a go-for to take some of the work off your DH. It might be harder to find a doula willing to help an UC, but I'm sure there must be some out there.

Yeah, another vote for finding a like-minded friend if you feel like you might want extra hands.

Maybe post on the finding your tribe forum and see if there are any doulas in training or such that might be interested.
