I'm searching for musical instruments appropriate for a 1+ year old for DD (14 months) but everything that I find are electronic things with batteries that play jingles when she pushes a button. While I know she's too little to really play an instrument, I'd like something that is less "electronic" (for lack of the right word). I'm thinking egg shakers, drum with a stick, maracas, tambourine, etc.

I'm also looking for play tools, preferably good wooden ones rather than those huge clunky plastic things everywhere.

Thanks for anyone who can point me in the right direction.

try here :thumb (Love the fruit shakers and they can double as playfood!)

http://www.musictogether.com/store/index.html sells a lot of great stuff... we have some of the castanets and a set of remo bongos... the bongos that we have are the same ones we bought over five years ago... they've been played with, thrown, stood on... they sound great and they are some non plastic STURDY bongos, baby! :D

we also have a nice set of maracas, symbols, a tambourine etc... from melissa and doug: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005RF5C/qid=1127249275/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl21/104-0584052-9676766?v=glance&n=507846&s=imaginarium

we also have some egg shakers from the local music store, some wooden butterfly shaped castanets from whole foods market, and one of those fisher price alligator xylophones... we got the alligator as a gift, but we are in the market for a chime-a-long: http://www.grothmusic.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/online-store/scstore/p-CH1JR.html?E+scstore

there is another thing i'm looking at these: http://www.boomwhackers.com/

i also really like http://www.larkinthemorning.com for other musical instruments... there is all sorts of neat stuff there, from all different cultures.

I'm also looking for play tools, preferably good wooden ones rather than those huge clunky plastic things everywhere.
again, melissa and doug! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005RF5D/qid=1127249585/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl21/104-0584052-9676766?v=glance&n=507846&s=imaginarium

have fun!

snowbaby i started getting my dd musical toys when she was 6 months old. none of them were toys and i got them from a music shop. small shakers, tamborines and maracas. then when she was 10 months old a kazoo and wooden recorder. at 1 a radioshack keyboard and i think 1/4th size guitar. since then i have got her some world instruments from a UNICEF store, drums, harmonica. even now i havent bought her a singly toy instrument - except for a regular and train whistle.

We have kind of a mix of musical things for my dd. We have some kids toy instruments like a xylophone from melissa and doug, that also came with some castanets and stuff.

If you go to a Sam Ash store or Musicians friend you can pick up some "real" instruments for not too much money. Some things we have are:

bongo drums
kazoo
shakers/maraca
recorder
ukelele
guiro (block w/rough surface that you scrape with a stick)
claves (wooden block that you hit with a stick)
box drum (this was actually kind of pricey, but she shares with DH)
tamborine

Have fun!
