I just read a "sensitive" topic post and needed a chuckle...
The topic is blood sugar in the urine...
I posted this after my last mw appt. Mine continues to creep up and I had the high-carb breakfast this morning before some blood work.
I visited my diabetic grandmother last week and she and I took my blood sugar first in the morning and then 2 hours after eating some yummy sweet cake, and both readings were really low. I am not too worried.
Anyone else having readings?
Anyone knowledgable why pregnant women cannot break down blood sugar as well? Just medically curious now...
Everyone clean of protein?

I have been testing every morning for ketoacidosis-- that's protein in the urine, right? I have been testing neg. lately with a few traces and one or two smalls.
My fasting sugar is another story. Every morning it has been over 90. I switched injectors, cuz I thought the insulin might have been old, and yesterday my sugar was 77. This morning it was 96 :( . i am so upset that I can't seem to regulate my morning sugar. I can get along all day by moving and watching my diet.
Any suggestions?

Emily,
I am not diabetic, so I can't pretend to be an expert at all, but those morning blood sugar readings you mention seem normal.
If you are diabetic, can you explain what your concern is? That it varies from day to day? I *thought* that variation was pretty normal, too.
I read that fasting readings under 100 were desirable, and that 100-120 was considered "pre-diabetes" range. 120 and above, diabetic range...
I'd love to know more...
xmasbaby: I *think* the issue is not pregnant women's inability to break down sugar, but our inability to release the "right" amount of insulin. Here's what a book i have says:
"The body requires insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, to pull glucose into the cells for use as energy. By about the sixth month of pregnancy, the baby or babies are growing fast, so the mother must make extra insulin. Yet at the same time, she produces hormones that interfere with the action of insulin. When the insulin supply cannot keep up with the demand, the mother's blood sugar levels soar, and she becomes temporarily diabetic."
Now, I know there is some controversy about how high sugar has to be to be a problem....and i know some people reject the GTT thing all together. I think i'm going to have to do it next week, and i don't mind, b/c with twins i think it could happen. then again, NO-ONE in my family is diabetic, so maybe i should avoid the stress of that nasty test.
On the pee front.....they found some sign of infection in my pee test last week, so i'm waiting all week now to get back a urine culture result. Yuck. I hope it's ok. I really was enjoying getting back one good test result after another, and now i'm totally stressed out about this one...sigh.

I'm 27 weeks and have to go in for the glucose screening. I think I'll be ok with that one.
What's the protein screen for? You'd think I'd know this being my third pregnancy! :o

My results only wack out if i've had a hard few days of vomiting before hand. Then i leach protein and blood and ketones into my urine. Not so good. But, most of the time, even with moderate vomiting, my levels are great. :)
There are lots of suggestions for getting sugar and/or protein back to normal levels if you search in the general I'm Pregnant or in Birth and Beyond.

Each time I go to the mw I weigh myself and use a test strip in my clean caught urine to test for protein and sugars. Mine has been negative at each visit. This is my 4th child and I have not have any problems with proteins or sugars in my urine during my pregnancies. I will be doing my fasting glucose test this next week. I'm not looking forward to missing breakfast and having to wait an hour after drinking the glucose. I'll just bring along my mothering magazine!

For those who have GTT coming up-- make sure to walk!! Do NOT just sit around waiting for the results! Walk back to your car to get something you "forgot." Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Go to the bathroom farthest from you. If they let you leave, walk around the block, etc. This will really help with the results. This is something noone told me, but could have prevented (or at least postponed) my GD status.

I just took the GTT Monday. I took the advice of some MDC mamas and had a high-protein breakfast before it: my husband made me huevos rancheros, YUMMM. The breakfast may have helped, cause the results came back great.
BTW, my midwife set it up so I went to the lab, drank the nasty orange stuff, went upstairs to the MW for my 28 week appt, then went back to the lab for the blood draw an hour later. I really appreciated the scheduling.

ahaha Michele!
I had trace glucose one time and trace protein one time. Last time I had trace leukocytes so she said I probably had an impending infection and sure enough a few days later I was all itchy and had candida under my boobs! That is since gone with probiotics, garlic, and whatever else I did....but we'll see what happens the next time with my pee! LOL

today was the second time i've had a "blush" of ketones in my urine-- the first was at about 8 weeks. it means i'm not eating enough (i'm still nursing my 21 month old and am 26.5 weeks), which is just UNBELIEVABLE because i eat ALL DAY LONG. seriously. and i've gained ALL the weight i gained the ENTIRE time with k! i'm going to be as big as a house by the end of this! and i'm already measuring a month ahead (fundal height)! this baby is going to be HUGE! :LOL

One of my pee tests said I was starving. Ha! Not likely when I've gained 55 pounds so far!

Everything has been normal - except "asorbic acid". I was thinking that it meant I ate acidic or high vitamin C items - but I cut those out and they are still present...any idea what this is?
