View Full Version : Does anyone want to do a birthbead swap?

I saw something about it on another due date club. Everyone sends a bead to everyone else, so each of us would get a bead from everyone - hopefully enough to make a birth bracelet!
I really want a birth bracelet. This is my second pg, so will not have a baby shower, and none of my friends or family are funky enough to get into a Blessing Way, so I figure this is my best chance! :)

We talked about it in the swap thread a few days ago. And several people wanted to. I think the consensus was that we wanted to. I was thinking it seemed early but maybe not. I'm happy to do whatever everyone else wants! :) I would be happy to organize it or Tara (MamaTaraX) said she would help. Let's do whatever everyone wants. I think it's a great great great idea especailly as my thoughts start to turn more toward gearing up for giving birth...

I'd like to do this, too. I vote for doing it in November or so, though.

On one of the other clubs someone mentioned the idea of doing a swap where all the beads (plus a small donation for shipping) get sent to one person who packages them up and sends them out to the group. I like this idea because that way we only have to send beads to one place instead of 10 or 20. Given my state of mind these days, I'm way less likely to be able to follow through with mailing something to a lot of people than I am to mailing one package to one person.

Someone (I think it was because whose name I can't remember right now :) ) suggested that also. I think it's a great idea. Much more simple. I would be happy to do that when the time comes unless someone else really wants to. I can't wait to do this!

I'm so happy there is interest! I'm also happy others are interested in organizing it because I'd rather not right now - too many irons in the fire! I'm definitely in though. I think we should start a little sooner than Nov. Especially if we were going to send them all to one place, and they had to be sent out again. It will only get done as fast as the slowest among us then, kwim? And the holidays are coming up...
Thanks,

I love the idea, too. It is very appealing to think of having all of you there with me somehow, as I am laboring. And also to think I can somehow be with you while you are laboring. Count me in!

This sounds like lots of fun! I'd love to join in too! It'll be nice to have something special for #2!

Okay. This sounds like it is going to come together.
Should we start setting up parameters for the beads or something? I have no idea how this will work ...

I guess if we are ready to do this now we should take awhile to pick out our beads - maybe start another thread. Like I said I would be willing (and happy) to do that but I don't want anyone else who wants to head it up to miss out. I just like organizing stuff like that...if anyone else wants to then go for it. Otherwise I guess I will start a thread for it in the next few days. We will have a while to get our beads...but will try to have it done before Thanksgiving, say? Anyway...what does everyone think?

Sounds good. We should have a thread with a list of who is participating at the top - we need to know how many beads to buy!
Also, I've never really bought beads - is there a diameter size for the hole we should agree to so they will all fit nicely on the same piece of string? Who has experience with beads?

I don't do beading, but the beads I got for a Mother Blessing before DD was born were all very unique in size, shape, color, etc. I thought that was really cool because they represented different people in my life - each one unique just like the beads. As far as the string hole, I'm not sure how to measure such a small diameter.
November does seem kind of late now that I'm thinking about it but I was just hoping for something special right at the end when I'm really getting into birth gear. What if end of October is the date to get the total beads to the organizer and end of November (or mid-Dec?) is the date to get the beads sorted and sent out to the participants? That would give lots of wiggle room.

That's one of the coolest ideas that I've ever heard!

This sounds really awesome. I think if we all sent them to one person by Oct 20th or so, the leader could get everything packaged and sent by Nov 15th if not sooner which would give people about a month at least to make their bracelets. I'd also be happy to head this up since I really have nothing to do right now (no kids, job, or big holiday obligations lol). I like the idea of having a bunch of different beads too, maybe choose something that speaks to you and we could all post the explanation of why we picked our beads!

I like that idea! On a related note, do you think we could all add a little bio with our beads when we send them out? I know we've all introduced ourselves in various threads in this forum, but I think it would be neat to be able to look at each bead and say, "this fiery red bead is from my friend Susan, who has fiery red hair, lives in North Carolina and is pregnant with her third baby." I think it would make it much more personalized...kinda like a birth bracelet guide! For me, the things I'd be interested in learning are: name, location, # of kids, maybe due date, and the explanation for why that bead was chosen.
Is that just silly? If it is, I can maybe wade through the intro posts and put together my own guide, but I do want to be able to put a story/person with each bead.
You're psychic!! I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking about possibly including a picture and a little note about why you chose it.
I'll keep checking back to see when they need to be sent in!

I don't know how to do a link but I just started a Birth Bead Swap thread. Please look at it and tell me what you think!!
