View Full Version : Pain in my abdomen?

So according to my OB receptionist (they "calculated with their damned wheel) I am about 4 1/2 weeks pregnant. It's my first, and I'm not sure whether to make my husband take me to the ER, or just wait till my appointment on the 13th of October.
Today I carried groceries in the house that were a bit heavier than I expected and it felt like I pulled something on the right side of my abdomen. Every time I let out a little cough or sneeze or something it hurts quite a bit. It's a dull pain though, not sharp, and it's not so uncomfortable that I have to double over.
Would you guys call the OB in the morning and ask about going to the ER? My husband spent his childhood with his mother going through 4 other pregnancies and basically was the "dad" in his house for all of them. He says I should just go lie down and stay calm.
Anyway, TIA.

Your husband is a very smart man :) Those are the uterine ligaments (sp?) and they are being stretched right now. You probably pulled it a bit. Take it easy, try not to do too much for a day or so. Try a warm bath, or sometimes cool compacts (not cold) helps relieve the pain.
Call the OB (page them) if you notice a lot of bright red blood. If the pain gets worse or is making things hard tomorrow, you should feel free to call the OB and ask if he/she has any advice. Otherwise, rest and a nice warm bath usually helps me a bit.
Just a tip, though, you're going to be feeling some pain down there occasionally. As your uterus grows, those ligaments are going to be stretching, which can feel a bit crampy (no one ever told me about this, and with my first pg, it really scared me!)

lilsis thank you SO MUCH for calming my mind down. I really am being a bit freaked out over nothing, but thankfully my husband knows me enough to prepare for it, and the fact that while doctors took 9 months to diagnose my gallstones I would carry my butt back to the ER every single week until something was done about it.
My mom said to expect SOME cramping...but I figured I'd post here before driving my husband insane about taking me to the hospital if it was just me who strained something.
I'm glad all you smart ladies are here to help us first-timers out.

Yeah out of my mind, what you describe sounds like the ligaments stretching. For me this is sharp, excruciating pain. I pretty much double over. But what you describe sounds like what it is like when it is milder. When it is milder, a sneeze or a cough bugs me.
Try not to stress about the wheel thing either, many OBs will do an ultrasound in the first trimester to date the pregnancy in the event there is any question about dates.
Congratulations Mama

Put your feet up and drink a boat load of water. :) I got an enormous amount of these right around 4.5/5 weeks. Scared the bejeebers out of me. All was fine, just had been overdoing it.
Also something no one tells you - gas, needing to poop, sometimes needing to pee - can also movethings enough down there to make it feel weird, or painful.
And if you read something and it says "mild discomfort" -it was written by a male! :LOL Sometimes they HURT! I just take it as a sign to sit my butt down and take it easy for a few hours. Usually helps right away.
It is my first pregnancy too - and it is amazing what they either don't tell you or understate greatly. :) I am 10.5 weeks now and still get days where everything down there feels achey. An if I overdo it, or get dehydrated, i will notice they are worse.

Adina!! With my second pregnancy, I was getting severe pains right up front, not in the ligament area, but up front, thinking I was having early labor or something. I soon learned I just needed to pee!!
OP: no problem, I was lucky and had a great co-worker who really should have been a midwife, she knew everything and was absolutely wonderful to me, helping me keep calm through those first-time jitters. Our bodies are pretty amazing things, aren't they? But, it's like my midwife says, it's not easy for the uterus to go from a lemon to a canteloupe in a few months (wow, makes sense when someone says it like that, at least it did to me!).
