After only 34 hours of labor, Jane Katherine made her beautiful self known to us! She was born at 38 weeks, and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, 19.5 inches long. She has the thickest, softest black hair I have ever seen. We delayed cord clamping, and she is the deepest prettiest pink, too. Yippee!
Now for the sad part. I thought we already had the most beautiful nursing relationship after only 2 days. She was wanting to do it so often, and so easily, and with no pain for Mama. Also, she has that drug-free alertness, and she would just look up at me while nursing, and I had been so nervous I would have emotional issues with nursing, but everything was blissful. NOW, my nipples are killing me! I thought her latch must be good because I could sometimes hear her swallowing even though my milk is not in yet, and she never hurt me. Tonight, I could not see anything wrong with her latch, but both breasts hurt like the dickens while she was nursing, and afterward, too! Could this be because my milk is about to come in, or is it because I have been letting her latch improperly? I have looked at lots of pictures and had the lactation consultant at the hospital check us out, too. I thought she had it deeply in her mouth with her lips pursed out? Weird that they would both start hurting at the same time, too, maybe? She seems to want to nurse ALOT, too. Maybe we are doing something wrong? The next LLL meeting is not for a week. :(

Oh how wonderful! My most heartfelt congratulations go out to you and your family, that is just fantastic! :balloons :banana
In regards to the bf'ing, I apologize, I wish that I could be of some assistance, but I'm a FTM to be, so I can't say I've been through it myself yet. My heart goes out to you though, and I do hope that things get better! Let us know how it goes. :Hug

Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl! :champagne
Re: breastfeeding....If everything looks normal to you and the hospital lc and you are still hurting tomorrow, you might consider seeing another lc. You could also do a little examination of the inside of her mouth for a tight frenulum (tongue tie), etc. (This can make babies tongue do weird things that are not visible to the untrained or even trained eye observing a latch). Make sure she is getting a good portion of the areola into her mouth. Try to position her tummy to tummy and have her mouth open wide before she latches. Make sure her chin is extended (think of how hard it would be to swallow with your chin down). Lead with the bottom lip and roll the top lip over, like if you were eating a gigantic sandwich. It is hard to tell what's going on without seeing how you do it.
Let me know any more specifics if you think of them and I'll try to help you find a solution to the best of my ability.
Once again, congratulations!

Congratulations on your little one! :throb
And I'm another who cannot help in the breastfeeding department as I'm going to be a first time mom. I hope you feel better though and find out what the problem is! Good luck! :Hug

Yippee! Congrats!
About breastfeeding, I'd also suggest talking to a LC. THey are able to see what you are doing right and wrong, and help fix it. It's a hard thing to diagnose on the internet.

Welcome Jane Katherine! (beautiful name btw!)
Congratulations!
As to the breast feeding..maybe she is adjusting because the milk is coming in and it's different for her...try different holds maybe...he suck might be getting stronger so maybe the improper latch is just now being felt.
also agreeing with everyone who says see a LC...there shouldn't be a lot of pain to that degree.

Congrats Mama! Welcome to the world Jane. :balloons
About the breastfeeding. It is possible that now that your milk is probably starting to come in that your little one has a more aggressive latch. Does is stop hurting so much after the first 15 - 30 seconds? The pain in the other nipple at the same time could just be that when letdown occurs on whatever side you are nursing on, the other one is also having letdown. I know I get that tingle/pain feeling most times my dd nurses. But like others have said, if you are still having problems tomorrow, I would try a different LC. If you have any lanolin I would also recommend putting that on your nipples to help with the pain. It can keep you nipples moist if they are starting to dry out { you don't wanna deal with the pain of cracked nipples if you can help it}. I hope that you get things worked out so you aren't in pain anymore.

Hooray!!!!! Welcome, Jane, and congratulations, mama! Go ahead and call an LC now. Sometimes it takes a few before you figure out what's what. LLL leaders will often be willing to come over and see you if there's no meeting soon. If you're getting sore, it's better to deal with it TODAY than to wait. In the meantime, keep olive oil or lanolin on your nipples and go braless if you're able. Breast shells are another option-- they'll hold your clothing off your nipples and keep air circulating. There's also a product called Soothies that you can get at the drugstore that will help them heal.
Hang in there! You'll be so glad for perservering. Congratulations on your new baby girl!

Congratulations!!!! :banana :banana :banana
As far as breastfeeding, definitely apply the lanolin. Visit a different LC. It may just be that she has a strong suck and now that your milk is coming in you feel it a lot more. I actually had sore nipples for the first 3 weeks and my ds was latched fine it was just that he had such a strong suck. Hang in there, it does get easier!

first off, congrats mama!!!
i second the advice of checking with an LC to make sure the latch is okay and also checking her frenulum for toungue tie. I do know that my breasts/nipples always hurt more when my milk comes in, so it's possible that the pain will resolve itself. if your breasts get really engorged, it can make it harder for her to latch on properly, which can lead to more pain. if you feel like this is happening, you might want to express a *bit* of milk from each side before a feeding (not much, just enough to soften your nipples a little for her).

Congratulations!
You can always call LLL as far as I know. Don't they have 800 #s and typically the leaders give out their home numbers for members to contact them ??

Thanks so much everybody! We are doing much better today. The lady at the hospital told me I should be wearing a nursing bra all the time, and I think that was part of the problem. I didn't wear one as much today, and we are already doing better. I think my milk came in already, too, and I just didn't realize it because my breasts don't look dramatically different like I thought they would. But her spitup and poop are different, and my milk looks clearish white instead of clear and yellow. So I think it was just a combination of those two things and we are actually going to be okay. Yippee! Thank you so much for all the help and support, Mamas! And for all the congrats! :D

I had a perfect latch but was in horrific pain.
Turns out that we had thrush. You can have thrush without being able to see it. Quick script and it was gone within 12 hours.
(((HUG))) and Congrats!

Congrats! I'll have my first girl soon as well!
Breastfeeding can certainly make nipple sore for a while, even w/good latch etc. My midwife's advice (after ensuring good latch etc.) was to make sure my nipples had plenty of air circulation AND to spread my own breastmilk on the sore nipples- the hindmilk at the end of feedings is richest and our milk has amazing healing properties. I did that, and it really helped, more than w/my first son. She also told me that for pinkeye/goopy eye, put in some drops of breastmilk- sure enough, when my older son brought home pinkeye from school & we all got it, breastmilk got rid of it in less than 2 days. After that, I used my milk on scrapes, booboos etc.- it's better than gold! :D
