I would really love to know how to make my own soap, but have no idea how to get started. Do I buy a kit? Are there good books on the subject? Any preferred methods?
I really know nothing about it, but would love to learn.

My mom does. I've made it with her a couple of times. Just be sure to follow all of the safety precautions as lye is toxic stuff.
I know she got a lot of info from this link:

The other thing she did was go to the library and check out every book they had. Then she bought a couple that she liked best.

I do! The all time best resource for me was "the soapmaker's companion". I don't remember at the moment who wrote it, but a goolge search should find it. Soap making is great because you get to choose everthing that goes in. Just be safe. Lye is serious and can cause harm. Watch out for the fumes too. Mixing lye and water kicks up at lot of fumes.

I checked out this site and it was really interesting. Thanks! I can see that there is a lot more involved than I originally anticipated.

Thanks! I will check out the book. I happen to have a barnes and noble gift card that I haven't used, so this will be a good excuse to use that!
