I posted about this in the I'm Pregnant forum, but haven't gotten any responses, so I thought I'd ask here too.

I had an "episode" of low blood sugar this morning. I got shaky, sweaty, and felt really weak and ravenous. (I'd inadvertently skipped my midmorning snack and had taken the kiddos to the library.) I got home and got food and felt better after a little while and I've talked to my midwife since then and she thinks it's b/c I missed my snack (she also asked what I had for breakfast...rice chex, milk, raisins, and a banana...not exactly high protein, low carb, but not awful, right?)

I'm just wondering if this means anything? I wondered if it might be a sign of blood sugar problems, though I'm thinking GD is high blood sugar, right?

We've been a little concerned b/c at last visit I measured four weeks ahead. Though she must not be terribly concerned b/c she called today to move our appt. to next Friday as opposed to this Friday.

GD is high blood sugar, though some people tend to rise high after sugars, then crash. Sounds like your body is a pretty good guide for what you need- regular snacks to keep your sugars even. Controlling GD with diet would be the same thing- small meals and snacks that mix protein and carbs.

Maybe you should carry some small snacks with you just in case?

Low blood sugar runs in my family. Eat small frequent meals and make sure you're getting enough protein :thumb I get really cranky and lightheaded and such if I don't eat for a couple hours...

love and peace. :love

What are some good snacks with protein? I've been eating lots of almonds and I was thinking of getting some walnuts. Yogurt has some, right, but it also has sugar so does that "undo" it?

Any suggestions? I feel like I'm not getting enough protein.

I've had episodes like you mentionned, I don't think of them as meaning anything is seriously wrong, just a reminder not to do whatever I did.

Having protein in the morning makes a huge difference in how my days go. If I don't I have a harder time trying to get enough food in, I crave sweets and carbs, and my energy is all over the place.

If you don't want to do eggs in the morning, there are lots of other ways to get protein in. Peanut butter on toast, protein powder in a smoothie(make sure if you pick up a shake mix that it doesn't have tons of sugar), hummus, cold cuts, cheese.

All of these apple for snacks as well. I also like fruit & cheese, or apples with peanut butter. I'll make logs of cheese and slice deli meats, I found a few granola bar type things at the health food store that are nut based, and a friend swears she got through her pregnancy on turkey jurkey from Costco. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, soy milk, cottage cheese, tofu and things made from it, other nut butters when you get sick of PB, trail mix.
