View Full Version : PAP in pregnancy

6 months ago, about 2 weeks before I became pregnant, I had an abnormal Pap and had to go back for a biopsy and more "detailed" sample. Hurt like Hell, I even passed out afterwards. But...it came back the same as the Pap and no need for further worry. But...they said I had to have a repeat Pap in 6 months to check for any changes. Totally understandable, but now I'm pregnant and at about 25 weeks.
I don't feel comfortable with doing this, I'm afraid it could trigger something like preterm labor, but my midwife insists it is necessary and safe.
Opinions? I've never had problems with preterm labor and this is my 4th baby. Should I be worried, or am I just paranoid???

:hugs What a difficult decision! I'm so sorry you're in this situation.

I think I'd probably post this to the general "I'm Pregant" board just to get more responses.

I don't have too much information other than it doesn't sound like a desirable thing to me to have done.

Hi, I had the same situation. Weird pap, followed by normal biopsy, followed by normal pap (in pregnancy). I decided to go ahead and do the pap (that shouldn't be a problem because it is just a little swab of the cervix) but wouldn't have done the biopsy until after pregnancy, had it been needed. There is really no rush. The chances of something being dangerous and progressing super fast are very unlikely. There should be nothing wrong with waiting until after your pregnany. I don't know what your pap and biopsy actually showed, but if it would ease things for you and your mw, why not just have the pap and decide from there. If your biopsy was normal, this pap will likely be too. A lot of people have paps in early pregnancy to check for other stuff anyway. Talk to you mw first about what your options would be if it came back "weird" again. Hope this helps.

A pap alone shouldn't be any concern for preterm labor. They won't do a biopsy or anything during pregnancy because that certainly would be a concern. But this way they will know that if its abnormal again, you'll need to have further treatment biopsy or whatever soon after the baby.
