I had a miscarriage at 12 1/2 weeks (see post: I needed to tell my story). To me it looked like I passed everything necessary. Now I am getting pressure to have a D & C "just to make sure everything's OK." I don't want unecessary surgery. If any of you ladies have not had a D & C after your miscarriage, can you please reply with your stories.

  Thank you, I'd really appreciate your input.

I had a natural m/c. What they did was do a few u/s after everything seemed "finished" to determine if there was anything remaining in my uterus. They also did weekly blood draws to check my hcg levels because if there was anything remaining the levels would indicate that. Like you, I'd be very against a D&C for no reason, esp. when there are easier ways to determine if everything is out.

I'm sorry for your loss. :Hug

Momlove (I think I know who you are? Am I right?) Anyway, I second what the previous poster has said. Are you still symptomatic? Are you still having heavy bleeding? Have they done any bloodwork or ultrasound? These are the questions I would be asking my provider.

Hugs to you! & If you are the Mama I am thinking of, will I see you next tuesday at LLL? Take Care.

I had a m/c at about the same time, at 11 weeks. I began to bleed in the morning, it got really heavy by the afternoon. I knew was was happening. By evening, I felt like I had passed everything. By the morning of the next day, I was still bleeding heavy, but not like before.

I called the midwife, we agreed that I would just stay home.
My body took care of everything just fine....no US, no D&C...no office visit.

I did get my blood drawn 2 weeks later, to be sure my levels had dropped.

Sorry you are feeling pressure for a D&C. A m/c with out one is possible.

Hugs to you momlove :hug

Momlove, so sorry for the loss of your little one. I've had 4 mc's, no d&c's. My 1st mc was at 13 wks. My water broke at 4am and nothing happened until 4am next day, when I had the big gush, then lots of bleeding. I went to the hospital because the heavy bleeding scared me to death. I lost a lot of blood, but they did an internal u/s (very painful) and determined it had been complete. My last 3 mc's were much earlier (no more than 8 wks), and I didn't go to the hosp. I did have my hcg levels tested with one of them, but by the time they got the results back I already knew it was over. The advice I've always gotten from various midwives and my sister is that you only need a d&c if the bleeding is very heavy and goes on for a long time without tapering off. I think drs want to wrap it all up neatly, be sure they know what's going on right now. But I think in a lot of cases, the body knows how to do a mc, just like it knows how to do pregnancy. The waiting is very hard, but going through unnecessary medical procedures is hard, too. Good luck with it all, and try to get as much rest as you can. You'd be amazed how much more quickly you'll recover if you get proper rest. It's taken me 18 years of mothering to finally figure that one out.

There is no need to have a d&c unless you have symptoms of retained tissue. Many places like to do one "just in case"

:hug to you on your loss

Thank you all for your replies. :) I stopped bleeding about a week and a half after the miscarriage. I physically feel normal and I think my monthly cycle should return this week or next. It's been three + weeks since it happened so I think everything is ok. This site has been so good for me. A rare and valuable place we can share & talk about things and our thoughts that most people don't talk about. Thank you Cristina :hug for recomending it to me and yes I will be at the LLL meeting next week.

Warmth to you all!
