I was reading some posts from you ladies about how spinal adjustments are really helpful during pregnancy. DSHS won't cover my chiro, but they do cover an osteopath. My regular doctor (an MD) has recently taken on a new partner who is an osteopath and I made an appointment with him.

So I go to the office and first thing, they weigh me. Which always really bugs me because it's none of their business how much I weigh, plus they always count the weight of my boots and everything else as part of what *I* weigh. I've tried telling them in the past that I prefer not to be weighed but they act horrified and say if they get audited and someone's weight isn't in the chart, they'll be in trouble. *sigh* ok fine.

Then we get into the little examination room and the gal starts asking me questions. Normally it's general health questions, but since I'm pregnant she starts asking all these questions about my prenatal care, as if they had a right to know. "Are you taking prenatal vitamins? How many weeks are you now? Who is your OB?"

Now, I just came in for a spinal adjustment. I already have a midwife for prenatal care. Why do they think it's their right to ask me personal questions about my pregnancy?

Then she took my blood pressure which is pretty normal and I didn't object, but I noticed that my midwife always tells me what my blood pressure is, and I appreciate knowing. This lady didn't - she just told me it was "good" like she didn't expect me to understand what the numbers meant. But the last straw was when she tried to stick a thermometer in my mouth. I asked why she wanted my temperature and she said it was standard procedure; they always take your temperature. Well I said they've never taken my temp at this office before and I'd rather not today, thanks. She seemed all shocked.

ARGH!! Pregnancy is not an illness! I just want a spinal adjustment! I am seeing a midwife and I do care about my own health and I'm a responsible mother who takes her prenatal vitamins!!

And then, I finally get to see the osteopath, who says he's sorry but he doesn't do spinal adjustments on women at my stage of pregnancy! AGH I wish my insurance covered my chiropractor... he has a nice pillow for pregnant bellies and does adjustments anytime through the day you go into labor. *sigh*

I'm sorry. :( I can't see a chiropractor without paying out-of-pocket either, and that's not happening.

That's kind of strange they let you get that far through the appt. if he wouldn't do anything, though.

Wow - that sort of visit would just make me furious. What a waste of time!!

Bummer about the insurance :(

Sounds like a crappy experience!!! It sounds like you have a chiro that you have gone to before. How well do you know him or the office. It might be worth calling to see if they could make any arrangement to see you for a set price. Like he could do a quick adjustment for $25 or something. If he already has your info on record and is really nice....who knows. It might be worth a try.

ARGH!! Pregnancy is not an illness!

Amen! ... If only everybody would realize this!!

(plus, probably all of that *is* standard procedure... and it ticks me right off because I blame the insurance companies for that -- Dr's have to get gobs of outrageously-priced malpractice insurance and then jump through hoops to meet all the requirements... our health-care system seems to be quite the mess)

My dh is a chiro and I am the office manager. Please call your chiro's office and explain your situation. We help people financially all the time, we are more worried about them getting the care they need than our end of the finances. You will find most chiro's to be the same way. It is worth a try calling and talking to the Dr. Good Luck!

I agree with ljpmom. I have paid out of pocket for chiros before, and they ALWAYS will work with me (even when I wasn't pregnant).

I went to see a new chiro just last week, and the receptionist talked to the ins. co. It looked like we hadn't paid our deductible, so we were going to have to pay $40 a visit 3x a week. The receptionist was very nice and said that they would work something out, so that we wouldn't be paying that much. Also, she said that she would call ins. co. again to see if they had made a mistake (which they had. Our deductible is $300, which we paid the beginning of the year).

So, call the chiro. Call around if you need to. The good ones will try to work with you!

All the temp stuff is procedure, but all they have to do is write down refused and their butt is covered. They can't make you do anything. It sucks about the spinal though
