Gestational Diabetes

Hi,

I am 30 weeks pregnant with my first, and have just been diagnosed with "gestational diabetes". I have been working with a CNM. She says that I will now need to be monitored by the OB in her practice as well. She says that I will also have to go to a perinatal clinic weekly for monitoring (including periodic sonograms). She says that this will all take place regardless of how well I control my sugar, as I now have this diagnosis. I am feeling very sad and overwhelmed by this. Up until now my pregnancy has been uneventful. I have gained 20 lbs, have no swelling. My typical diet is vegetarian, lots of fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates. I do not drink soda or eat sugary foods, and feel like that test after drinking a glass of sugar syrup might indicate a tendency towards glucose intolerance, but did not look at how my typical diet has affected my pregnancy. There have never been any problems noted with my monthly urine samples. I am scared about how this could affect my ability to have a natural birth. I am nervous that they will push early induction (etc). I have already had more sonograms than I really would have liked, due to some early spotting. I am thinking about exploring other practitioners, but am not sure how this would work with my insurance. Does insurance make it difficult for a CNM to work with someone who has already been diagnoed with GD? If I do check my blood sugar regularly, is there really any reason to go to this perinatal clinic weekly? As I am going through my medical insurance, will I be required to accept certain interventions as a result of this diagnosis?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jane

P.S. I have posted this in the "I'm Pregnant" forum as well. Someone there suggested I cross post here.
