DD and I went shoe shopping and she fell in love with a pair of star blinking tennis shoes, but they didn't have her size. She started to cry, which quickly escalated into a complete meltdown. Of course I had other shoes we had to buy so...everyone of course is staring, as people do when a child is having a fit. So I calmly knelt beside her and hugged her and said "I can see how disappointed you are." and within 30 seconds she stopped crying and said "I AM disappointed. Why don't they have my size?" and I promised her that we could check back another day or on the internet. And she was OK with that.

So this woman comes over and says "I really admire the way you handled that, and how in tune you are with your little girls feelings. I was nice to see. Most moms start yelling and threatening their kids which makes it worse. She's lucky to have you."

It felt good -- because it is hard sometimes to be at your child's level when tantrums are downright embarrassing. LOL. :D

That's great! I love it when I don't think people are looking at me thinking "why don't you just spank him."

I'll share the compliment that I recently received. My ds (4) and I were watching the street sweeper being cleaned out. They do this by connecting a hose to a fire hydrant and filling up the sweeper with water and emptying it three times. My ds watched the water be released and then jumped right into the water running along the curb. After the final rinse, ds waded along the curb for two blocks until the water ran down a drain. He was standing in the water watching it run down, putting leaves in the current, etc, when a police car pulled up. I was sure the officer was going to say something about how I shouldn't let ds play in dirty water in the street. What he in fact said was "If there was a mother of the year award, I'd vote for you." :D

wow...that's really awesome.

Think back to that compliment the next time you're not having such a great day and remember that it pays off, all of it.

That is so great for both of you, so often people just expect kids to behave perfectly, but are so rude when the little ones act their age.

And for someone to be ok with kiddos playing and getting dirty, that's great. I think it is so sad hearing so many parents (mostly moms) worry about kids getting dirty. Kids need to get dirty and play, that is the best part of childhood!
