I miscarried in June and am pregnant again. It was a blighted ovum. I have had two healthy pregnancies prior to the m/c. Anyone go on progesterone? I would like to hear if this works or not; or if anyone has any info; that would be great. The doctor wants me to start on progesterone ASAP. Thanks.

Progesterone is a great way to help sustain a healthy full term pregnancy. Use until you are btw 4-6 months or 16-24 weeks whichever way you calculate. It does work.
If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer them for you. This is a topic I happen to know a lot about.

Low progesterone is a fairly common reason for early miscarriage. Taking it can only help and can't really hurt, so many OBs and REs prescribe it for women who have had more than 1 loss. There is some controversy about it being overprescribed, but again, it can't really hurt, so many docs subscribe to the better safe than sorry philosphy.
Most REs prescribe it for the whole first trimester. After that, the placenta is large enough to make all the prog you need. I have taken it 3 times and in my last pregnancy, I took it through week 12.

I used progesterone suppositories and 50 mgs of Clomid to get pregnant and stay pregnant with my first two children. After years of infertility and loss this was the solution for me. My kids are now 11 and 8, and perfectly healthy. The progesterone they use for the suppositories is natural, bio-identical progesterone. I would would use it again in a heartbeat if I were to do it over again.
Good luck,

I got pregnant the first month that we tried and I had a normal, easy pregnancy resulting in a healthy baby boy born at 37 weeks. When he was one (on his 1st birthday actually :wink ) we started ttc #2. Eleven months went by and FINALLY we conceived! 6 weeks later I had miscarried. Conceived again almost immediately and miscarried 8 weeks later. When I conceived again I requested progesterone suppositories and did that for 3 months +/- On July 17, 2003 Zachary was born, healthy and beautiful at 38 weeks. Not sure if the outcome would have been the same without the progesterone, but I would do it the same way again-it made me feel like I was doing something to try to hold on to the pregnancy.

I have been using organic natural prog. cream for several months. I concieved in October, am now almost 7 weeks. I am still using the cream. My mw informed me that I could safely use it until 36 weeks if I wanted. Any longer use would make me go overdue.

I see that you posted this question a couple of months ago, but I am new here and wanted to share my story in the hopes that it will be helpful to you and perhaps others. First off, I am so sorry for your loss, and congratulations on your new pregnancy. I hope everything is going well this time! :)
My first pregnancy I lost at two months, my next I carried to term without event (aside from some early bleeding), but after that I just couldn't seem to hold a baby. Over the course of two years I had four conceptions: I lost the first three babies within the first six weeks; with the fourth my Dr took my blood to test for my progesterone levels: they were so low that the Drs didn't think my pregnancy was viable any longer. We subsequently learned that I'd lost one of a set of twins, but the other was still growing: I began taking natural progesterone tablets that day, had my blood levels monitered to be sure my progesterone levels were rising (they were) and went off the meds at 16 weeks. When my son was born, followed by the double placenta I grieved afresh for the baby I'd lost, but was so grateful for the one I had.
When he was 11 months old I miscarried again, this time just two and a half weeks after conception. A year later I conceived once more and had my blood drawn the day I did the home pregnancy test: my progesterone levels were just barely in the 'normal' zone: a week later they had dropped and I began taking the supplements immediately, and went on to have a healthy pregnancy and birth.
I would love to have more children: I will definitely have my progesterone levels checked right away, and I wouldn't hesitate to take the supplements.

Mommas,
thanks so much for the info. I truely believe that this last loss is due to progest. def. I just didn't feel 'hot' and still wore sweaters. I thought about this a few times during the pg. but its too late now and I"m trying not to beat myself up over it. I will be going to the dr soon for this.
Thanks again.

Did you purchase it somewhere? Or does it have to be prescribed OTC?

Hi this is Kturvant,
Can you tell me the name of the progesterone suppositories and the dosage?

I have had five miscarriages, all seemingly due to low progesterone. Most of the miscarriages took place within a week of testing positive for pregnancy. I also have a high anticardiolipin antibody, which can cause overactive blood clotting.
I am pregnant right now and have been using progesterone since a few days after ovulation. I am also taking a baby aspirin a day to prevent blood clotting. I am in my ninth week and all has been going well. I am not out of the dark yet, but I am certainly hopeful. My HCG and Prog numbers are high, and the baby has been developing beautifully.
I have been seeing an RE for a while, and tried out different forms of progesterone (followed by blood labs) while not pregnant to see which ones my body responded best too. I tried oral progesterone orally, vaginal suppositories, and oral progesterone vaginally. My body responded significantly better to oral progesterone vaginally. I insert 200mg of the oral pill twice a day.
It is important to start progesterone shortly after you think you've conceived. Beginning it after you've tested positive for pregnancy is often too late.
So far so good for me (knock on wood), so I highly recommend it! Good luck to you.

oh wow, i just realized that the orignal question was posted quite a long time ago. for those of you asking about the brand, i take prometrium 200 mg capsules. i think the brand is "solvay pharm." it is yellow and says "SV2" on the capsule. it has to be prescribed.

I am new to this site and I have been reading many posts about Prometrium because I am on it now and I can't seem to find the answer.
I had a molar pregnancy last July and after a D & C, the tissues left over began to grow again so I had to take a methotrexate shot for the growth to disappear. We had to wait one year and we did. This month we got pregnant and lost it because it was a chemical pregnancy. So I called my doctor to tell her about it and they prescribed me Prometrium. My period started on September 14 and I started taking Prometrium on September 17. Yesterday was day 16 of my cycle and I have cramps, my breasts are just sore beyond belief and I am spotting-spotting to where I need to where a panty liner. I spotted a little on Saturday-went away. I spotted more on Sunday and went away. Spotted again on Monday and went away and now again today. My cramps are still there and geez my breasts hurt. I can't tell if it's my period or implantation bleeding or if I am just screwed up. I called my doctor and they are waiting on my tests results. What the heck????
