View Full Version : My OB Told Me to WEAN!

I'm so mad! I went for my first OB visit today and saw the NP, who I thought was a little more open-minded, but she told me that I would need to wean my 19mo dd because if I didn't then the baby wouldn't get enough nutrients to grow properly!
Is this true? I have read that nursing during pregnancy is fine...even Dr. Sears says so!
I really like my OB but this just really upsets me. My plan is to just lie and tell her that I've weaned dd just so she'll stop bugging me about it.
I need you all to tell me to ignore this advice and continue nursing! Have any of you nursed while preggers with no problems? I'm going to do some internet research (including consulting with drsears.com) to make myself feel better.

don't listen for one minute to this bad advice. Though I think it's wise to take in extra calories and nutrients while tandem nursing, BFing while PG is perfectly fine and VERY common in many many cultures. I would be ticked off too.

Even after numerous miscarriages, my OB told me that there was no reason to not continue breastfeeding. So nice to find an OB who says, "there is absolutely no medical evidence to suggest that nursing while pregnant causes miscarriage." It doesn't sound like that was her issue, but many people nurse while pregnant without a problem...where did all the tandem nursers come from otherwise?

That is insane! I nursed my son until he weaned when I was 8 months pregnant. My dd is nursing now. If I were you, I"d interview with other doctors. You want someone you can be honest with and who is on the same page as you. Keep nursing!

My MW said that tandem nursing is just fine :D I think that if it still feels right for you, then just make sure taht you are getting enough calories. I wouldn't wean pre-maturely according to this advice :shake

If you do stay with this doc, I wouldn't lie to her - I would educate her! Bring her printouts of some of the resources pp have given you - maybe she'll stop spreading misinformation!

I tandemed my 1st and 2nd for 2 years, and DS2 is a healthy HUSKY 2 1/2 yo... Maybe try a LLL leader or the books Adventures in Tandem Nursing and/or (I seem to remember good tandem info in) Mothering Your Nursing Toddler to help educate... But if your doc doesn't come around I'd start looking for care elsewhere.

I am from the March due date, but I had to respond. A few short months ago, my OB also told me this. I switched to a midwife who completely approves of my nursing while pregnant and I and the baby are doing just fine. Ds gets very little milk now, but he still nurses like crazy. Continue nursing mamma. There is no need to worry.
