I think I got PPD. My son is 6 weeks old on wednesday and I've been battling 2 virus colds and an infected toe in the last 3 weeks. I've been on antibiotics twice...but something tells me the constant nausea and knot in my stomach that started 3 days ago isn't normal. I have a history of panick attacks, but didnt' have any real problems with it in the last 4 years. Right now the biggest symptoms I have are: 24/7 nausea, no appetit, can't eat, trouble sleeping and no energy. My primary care physician today thought I might have a stomach bug and put me on an IV-bag of fluids for slight dehydration, but I have an appointment with my OB tomorrow and if she agrees about the PPD and suggests going on meds I'll do it. I don't want to continue feeling this way. I'm not a good mom right now...I'm not enjoying the time with my newborn...I need help.

I'm afraid of meds though. Since I'm already having problems eating which med doesn't include nausea etc. in the side effect list? I'd love to continue nursing, but I'd wean just to feel better and finally take good care of my dear son. Any advice on the different meds out there?

Thanks so much,

Alex

I don't have any advice on the meds, but I've been where you are. And it's hard. :( I was put on Effexor XR and it worked for me.

Do you feel depressed...you might look up signs of depression on the internet. They have checklist where you answer questions etc. I have trouble with depression and anxiety but I don't usually get the nausea except when I am worried...used to happen when I was a kid cause I hated school. I would talk to the doctor about it possiblly being a bug or something also. Are you still taking antibiotics those can make you feel bad. There are quite a few antidepressants that can make you have nausea, trouble sleeping, weight gain so ask the doctor which ones.

I'm glad you reached out, Mama2Mila. This stuff IS hard! PPD can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Mine was more anxiety than depression. In fact, my depression in general tends to be a mix between depression & anxiety.

I went on meds when DD was abou 6 months old. Took me that long to realize something wasn't right. I took celexa, & was able to keep nursing. Many meds are ok for nursing, so if you are enjoying & committed to nursing, don't let your Dr tell you you can't nurse while on meds.

I'm on a generic form of prozac now in my 2nd pregnancy. I plan on being on some sort of anti-depressant after delivery. I just do not want to take the risk of being that miserable again.

But that's just me.
