Hi ladies. I posted a link to this thread about a year ago and I think it's been pruned, so I thought I'd start a new thread. Check out my post in Health and Healing from about 18 months ago:

Depressed and Super-low in Amino Acids (http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=114972&page=1&pp=20)

It took about two years of hunting to find that relief for me. In those two years, I did a major candida cleanse and worked on reducing the high levels of uranium in my body. I was deficient in Bs and in EFAs as well and supplemented those and started on a nutrient rich diet. I still feel like I am a work in progress, but I can say that the PPD is gone.

It's all about deficiencies. The hard part is figuring out which ones. For us moms, probably the key thing is to start with Bs and oils. Get a bottle of cod liver oil and a good B supplement. Eat liver. I know. :nut Eat liver. It's actually not that expensive compared to other meats. You can get it at Whole Foods in Fresno for $2/pound. With liver I would definitely go organic.

How pink are your lips? Mine are a very pale pink and Frederick's are a dark, vibrant pink. Guess who is first in line for my B vitamins?

That's the really short version.

edited to make the short version longer:

The other side of the deficiency coin is reducing your exposure to what is depleting your body. The biggest is processed foods. Cut them out. They require nutrients to digest and have no nutrients in them to start with for the most part. Other things require nutrients to process as well -- medication, toxic exposure (as your body tries to detoxify). There are so many changes we all should be making that it's daunting. Start where you can, when you can and move on from there.

wow. Thanks so much for this info. Are there any threads, or info on depression while still pregnant? I have just started with fish oil, etc. and am 28 weeks...

Beansavi -- The natural treatments for PPD would apply equally in pregnancy. It's definitely good to take care of these issues now while your growing baby needs them. I recommended the oils and Bs because most of us are deficient in them and you need a lot of them to make a baby. They are also fundamental nutrients that can mess up other nutrient levels and keep your body from using those others as well. Keep up the oils (raw, added to salads or right off of a spoon) and Bs.

I'll repeat the liver recommendation. It makes a huge difference for a lot of people, as much as I don't like to eat it. And try to stay away from everything processed. I know that this is huge too, but you need nutrients and processed foods don't have many (if any) and require nutrients to metabolize. We can't afford that.

The thread in Health and Healing that I refer to in the top of this thread.

It's just my amino acid update.

God, I love your posts! I just wanted to add here that while I have dealt with just about all of my depression issues through diet and gut health (whole other story!) I am pregnant and nursing and things can sometimes crop up. I take a CLO supplement daily-at a therapeutic level. It's necessary for the baby's brain develoment as well. Most of us have omega 3 deficiencies as a result of getting too much omega 6's in the diet. I also do a B supreme that is pharmaceutical grade along with inositol ( a B vitamin derivative) if I feel I need it. There are days that I do extra magnesium as well. For pregnant mamas, I'll say it too. Depression is a deficiency that can be caused by numerous things, but remember...if you're deficient so is your baby. There are many natural options out there that have no real side effects and can really alleviate significant discomfort. Noone should have to go through this. Ever.
