Hi I am in Australia and saw a program on ABC TV about people in Japan who save thier childrens hair from thier first hair cut and get a calligraphy brush set made with the hair as the bristels? I havn't been able to find any other information about this and was thinking maybe it is quite common and someone could let me know an address on the net i could investigate.

Thanks
Yolande :throb

I live here in Japan and just the other day,an old guy asked if I was going to cut my daughter's hair to make a brush(and no way...she has such little hair as it is!!)I have heard about this before but never met anyone who has done it!I bet it costs an arm and a leg as well.Sorry ,can't give you much more than that!

Thank you for posting this question...it is such a great idea, what a beautiful and meaningful keepsake.

I found this great article....

Maybe it is just as simple as visiting a local barber or hairdresser to enquire...

and here is another article, which I thought was just sweet, not really informative about where or anything, in fact it just mentions it...

Let us know what you find out! I would like to be able to do this too... Paige

Yeah, when my son eventually has his haircut I will have it made in to one calligraphy brush. It is mixed with horse's hair because it is too soft. It can only be the first haircut though- the hair should have the natural point. Not sure these brushes are used.

Did you know that they keep the umbilical cord when it falls off?
And we all sleep with our little ones!

:thumb thanks for your replies that really gives me something to go on.

My son is eight now and I have one almost 2 and have saved their hair from the first haircut @ 1+year old since i saw the program. ( i also put some into their scrapbook album) My first had soooo much thick thick hair it almost fills up a medium zip lock bag. My second had to wait untill he was 18mnths for a haircut and it is about a cm in the bottom of the same size bag. same genes so different it is always ammazing to compare.
thanks again

hi there, i'm in shanghai and have a few (chinese) friends who have done this, i think it's also traditional here. it's not too expensive over here, though i think they also mix it with another hair (perhaps horse hair as previously mentioned,) because they've used hair from babies only a month or two old and they definitely didn't have as much on their little heads as i saw in the brush! sorry i don't have any other info for you, though i'm sure you could find it on the web.
