Yooper,
How was the new medical office? I'm curious about it because we'll be losing our medical insurance in July (DH is leaving the military and we will stay here, we like it so much) and will be shopping for cash pay medical deals. Anyone heard anything about that BlueSky place? It sounds intriguing...
Medical Arts was OK. Dh and I have been going there for 10 years or so. Pretty typical. More than anything, I like it because I do not have to go to the hospital to got o the doc. I like being able to just go to the doc. But I was not going to take dd there because I was not at all happy with how they handled me when I was pg. I guess I have gotten over it. With it being so close to my house and frequently being without a car, it makes sense for us. They did not even ask about vaccinations and did not say anything about dd having never gone to a well-baby check.
I have heard good things about Bluesky. I wish it has been around when we were without insurance. The doctor there is from Keweenaw Memorial and was an OB. My friend had him and he was very supportive of helping her attempt a vbac. He hooked her up with and cooperated with a doc in Marquette. It ended up not working out (she went 2 weeks overdue) but I was impressed that he even tried to work with her. It is my understanding that he is going to have seminars explaining what he is doing. I would suggest calling and seeing if there are any coming up.

Cori,
I went on the real estate pages. I love looking at houses:) I did not see any on Houghton Ave but did see a 37K house on Douglass. Is that the one?

VBAC. I hate reading and thinking about it, but that's the boat I will be in. 26 hour home birth with 2 midwives preparing to catch a baby, turned into a cesarean! Try going to the hospital at 9.5 cm...It really sucked. Anyow, If we decide to have one more, I'm definitely am not scheduling any freakin cesarean, but hopefully that will be 2 years from now and I don't have to worry about that yet.

Wow, my perspective oh this "medical insurance" stuff has changed so much since living in Canada.
WHAT???Your husband and your family should get some type of medical insurance after leaving the military! I can't believe it! We pay $108 for our entire family of 3 out here, I've never seen a medical bill for anything! I had a crazy pregnancy that ended in a cesarean and in the hospital for 4 days....saw and paid $00.00, this is one thing that I absolutely can't stand in the U.S. Just ridiculous, especially after seeing it from a different perspective. Everyone, as a human right, should have access to medical care.
Ok, I'm done ranting. But this is the one thing that freaks me out about moving back.

Cori Beth,
We're seperating instead of retiring which almost nobody does because if you can hang for 20 years you get a lifelong pension and medical insurance. We've been in 12 years and are DONE. Hence the lack of medical. We're all healthy and strong so we're going to wing it until DH gets Master's and new employment:thumb

No, Medical Arts is the doc practice in the old train depot building on the waterfront in Houghton. They are affiliated with Portage. Not my first choice as a place to try out for dd but like I said, I needed to walk as dh had the car all day....... Or else take a taxi which is a pain with a carseat. I did notice the Holistic healing place last time I was up in that shopping plaza, but I do not know much about it. I recognize the name of the person that is practicing there. He wrote some....um....interesting editorials in the paper a few years back. I am sure we will check it out at some point.

yup, that's the one...I guess I have my streets all messed up.
I drove by that house yesterday. It is pretty cute. It is nicely back from the street....more so than the others in that block. It needs paint (big surprise....). The front porch looks like it would have a really nice view. The yard is pretty small and the back looks shady. You might have a hard time making a garden work. However, that is true of almost all of the houses in Houghton since we are on the wrong side of the hill. But from what i can see with all of the snow, the back yard looks pretty private and like it would be easy to keep kids contained. And of course, it is 1 block from the park which is a HUGE plus. We go to the park every day when the weather is nice. And three blocks from the tunnel to the waterfront. I am surprised that the price is so low.....there must be a lot of things that need work inside. The extrerior of the house looks like it is in pretty good shape except for needing paint. It is also in the "slums" of Houghton......but so are we:)
I LOVE real estate so let me know if there are any other properties you want me to drive by:)

Wow, that Douglass Ave house sounds like the one on our street. What a great time at the park this summer!!!!
Just in case, I will mention we we're fired from Med. Arts for non compliance. But thats another story, yikes...:dizzy:
Glad everything went well with the UTI Yooper, we're becoming old pro's at these, dd is prone. PM me if you'd like some natural remedies to sooth and heal. Dr. S. Campbell is a new ped. at Portage who is somewhat flexible as well as Dr. J. For Family Dr. we're quite keen on Dr. R. Carlson. Young enough to still think outside the box... And a new mommy soon! And of course Dr. J. Meyer is the ONLY Dr. for girl stuff... Heart of gold, that one! Expecting again too! Boy is Vbac changing around here!!!!

Yeah. I actually was fired from Medical Arts myself. Dh still goes there but to a different doc. Happened when I was pg and had the audacity to ask a question. Like I said, I am really not keen on the place but it was within walking distance and I wanted her seen that day. They were a day late coming back with the actual results. It was negative. But dd STILL is not sleeping so I have no idea what to do at this point. We are becoming zombies....... I have heard good things about Carlson. I need to find a doc for myself. I have not been to one since I was pg.

Hey, awesome, perfect, my DH is a Librarian....he used to work there as a library assistant and then as head of adult services, and then we moved so he could get his Master's degree in Library Science. I check the PLDL site often and hadn't seen anything there...hmmm, we will investigate further and contact the Library! Thanks so much for the info!

Not computor ready but maybe can add some insite to Dr. dilema.(Does ANYONE have insurance these days?) Dr. Jacobs in Calumet has been a great guy seeing the little people and he is sensitive and ok with vaccination issues. Dr. Haeffman is willing to back up home birthers without grief if they are seeing a well trained midwife. All good things to file away. This truly is a great place to live and raise babies and grandbabies. Happily catching!!

Ha ha! Ok, I was thinking someone was coming to LLL peddling Tupperware or Amway or something. I was like "tell them to LEAVE!" Call the cops if you have to...... That makes a little more sense but is still completely inappropriate. Not sure how you should handle that. Are they gonna come back for every meeting? I would have freaked on anyone that tried to play Monday-morning-quarterback in regards to the birth of my child at my first post-partum LLL meeting.
Had to travel back in time to revive this but it has to be said.. this is a TOTAL mixup!!!:gloomy: :gloomy: Who would ever criticize someone for their birth choice!!!I've advocated homebirthing for 30 YEARS but my three children were hospital births(and they all turned out ok) Perhaps the soul who points the finger is the one who has the issues..hmmm Anyway, all you lovelyBFMs, fear not attending the local LLL..You will be loved and welcomed no matter where your little one made his appearance or who caught him (or her)when arrived!!Yes, I,m still Catching!

Do you know anything about Portage docs and the vaccination issue? I am still not happy with the doc situation and my dd. But I am often without a car and it is difficult for me to get to Calumet. Especially if it is something that creeps up.

I have family that sees Dr.McKenzie and they are no vac, he will suggest vaccines but dosnt push. Iam sure if you ever needed a ride to see a doctor in Calumet that either GrammyMidwife or I would be more then happy to assist you with that, the gas tank is always full.
I personaly have to say I see Dr. Jacobs for five years now and have told many people about him. I have never gone into a well baby check and he just asked if I wanted to vaccinate and I said no, never a word since. I only take my guys in when I need to. He gave me his home phone number and I have called him at home with questions to see if I needed to bring my guys in. He is great when I tell him that I treat with homeopathics and has often asked questions on how they work.
He also treats my husband who has ADHD and asthma and has done a wonderful job and dosnt push meds. For those who would like to know he also does circs. I would say hes the guy to see if you need something for the kids.

grammy is bbsitting for 21 mo old (yikes )and had a moment to log on. to CoriBeth who is house hunting..have you considered going a bit north, say to Calumet or Centennial Heights? You would end up with a 15-20 min drive to Houghton but the housing prices are VERY reasonable and the yards are nice and large. Also lots of available choices up here plus the friendly Doctors and 1 resident midwife (ha ha) Happy house hunting!! Had some experience with Canada's health care system when I lived below the Bridge and caught many babies in SaultStMarie(Ontario) As I remember, they were painfully SLOW but care was adequate and yes, it was free!Whoa!Onterio decided to "leagalize" midwifery and I was no longer able to cross the bridge..A great loss to many ladies as they had no choice but to go to hospital or do it yourself(some did!)Anyway, I have fond memories of
canada.Better go..Dbis very quiet...

And, did I mention the price of gas and the price of food! dear god- it makes me want to vomit. She was talking about how stressed the people here seem all the time- and even though in the great little UP we got our own crap- it is not a constant fight like it is here.... Be blessed folks- you know, there are the :dizzy: people every place you live- we even got them here :dizzy: But, in the UP there are more  people than :dizzy:.... It's not so fast foody here, but there is a ton of food! That's all people do here is eat!
EXPENSIVE!!! We can't wait to even visit my brother in Seattle so we can go to trader Joes down there...
Everyone here shops and eats. :dizzy: Nothing completely wrong with that. I like to do those things too. But people are so incredibly full of themselves here! AND one thing I can't stand is this whole word "play date" has this always been used and I'm just a new mom that didn't know about it? What happened to just hanging out and moms chatting and becoming friends and the kids play and we have tea and treats or a potluck? The word play date makes me feel like I'm a pawn in a board game or something. It's just weird. Maybe it's just me.
The winter here SUCKS. Rain Rain Rain. I can't take it! We're in this little 2 bedroom apartment, in the basement of a huge house, for over $900 a month! AHHHHHH!
Ok, enough of that...Yeah, we've considered moving north or to Stanton township, but honestly, if DH and I are both working in the city of Houghton, it's really important to us that we can walk to work and to the Library and to get some groceries...but we really do like Calumet as well. Who knows what will happen. But we're open to options of course.
So where is the local LLL meet up? I hope to attend in June. I'm a little nervous about bf'ing my almost 2 year old when I arrive. I'm so used to responding to her when ever and where ever we are here in Vancouver, so hopefully it will be the same there too.

Well I call them playdates too.. The ones where it is an invite only type of thing. And believe me, we need invite only! :lol I, along with other mamas I know, are pretty picky about who we let our kids hang out with, and who we want to hang out with too- I like playdates!

Give me a break. All humble and noble to try to play the PC we love everyone and anyone can come, but I know you do not mean that.
I know that there are kids you would not want your Grand kids hanging out with. And besides when you are talking about a function at your house, you can not just have it open to anyone who reads about it on a thread just show up. That is insane.
In my opinion, ANY ONE that comes in my house MUST be invited. And even if I had set up a time to meet somewhere outside of my house, your need to be invited. If I set it up, it is my event.
Imagine if you were having a family reunion and people did not have to be invited. They just see you at the park and come over and sit down and make themselves at home.
Imagine you go to dinner with your partner. And you are sitting there at the Library and someone sees you and feels they do not need an invite and they just come over and sit at your table with you.
Invite only is the way of life. Everything you do is invite only.
"just hang out with friends" is what you call it. That is what it is. People at play dates are all friends hanging out. That does not mean everyone is a friend. And you do not invite every single friend every time you want to do anything.
If you just want to hang out you can go to the park and meet some people who are there and maybe they will "INVITE" you to their house and call it a "play date".

We do have friends that can just drop over- but they have an "open invite" and they know that. Like Crayon said, we, along with a lot of our friends are picky about who our kids are around. I am not going to invite a crazy person into my home just to have an "open to all" policy. Maybe it is just us, but we like to protect our children, and in doing that we choose to surround ourselves with people we want to be around.

I think you are not understanding me correctly.
What I am saying is there are lots of playgroups in the area- LOTS- nearly one every working day- from BHK and so on. What I am saying is that playdates- the ones that are offered at homes or at reserved locations by private parties are to me concidered "invite". Because, I nor any my friends have homes or yards big enough to hold a ton of adults and kids. We had a weekly playdate "tea time" that was on the verge of getting too large- to the point of people inviting themselves- so I think it is just a respect thing, not to go to people's homes unless you are invited. Or you have an "open invite".
Now all the BHK and local Festivals and what have you- is open to everyone- and great!
No, Houghton is not dangerous- per se- but, there are people I would not want my kids around, just like I am sure there are in every town in the world.
It was not meant to turn into a bash "playdate" session. I just stated that I feel like there are open play events and private invite only playdates.

Crayon, I didn't mean to give you a hard time :) ( and actually I did get my backpack stolen from my car when I lived in Dodgeville, right out of my driveway!)
I do think that the "invite only" culture is foreign to many neighborhoods in the U.P. ....try living in the ALaskan bush, you have to lock your door and turn out the light if you don't want 600 kids running through your house and muddying your floors at all hours! I think I've just lived in too many small town, I'm all about the random intruder:lol

Not sure if this is rellevant but, people actually drove 2,000 miles to crash our wedding, totally uninvited.... so, maybe yes, maybe no, but when I'm nursing a toddler, I want to know whom I 'm flashing, and whether they'll appreciate the hard work that goes into my style of parenting. When else do we let our hair down and :blah We all need a safe place to be intimate with friends, and know our kiddos are getting the same. The last thing mamas want to see is things getting whipped into a wild frenzy with my ds wearing a purple tutu, enough is enough. Drifter get your own purple tutu and chill Bill. Love ya! Wild frenzies are strictly reserved for MSP EVERYBODY knows that!
Now, on a more important note, ds2 lost two teeth these last two days. One in the pool, and one in a carrot which he most unfortunately swallowed. Got the total 7yo look about him now. Gonna have to make some brownies (gluten free thank you very much) to celebrate! If you see him around town, please do tease him (gently) he's quite proud! ME TOO!:wink

ok, I didn't mean to stir the pot.
I just think the phrase "play date" is strange. And my DH and I make fun of that pop culture term every time we use it. It just seems so "star bucks, cell phony, SUV" to me. No offense to anyone, our culture is just bonkers:dizzy: . Usually I just say to my DH " hey, we're spending the day with Linda and Kristi and their girls and heading out.
At any rate, I of all people are very critical of other parents and the way they raise their children, I don't mean to be, I just am, and I try to respect all beings but...that's life. I also feel like I have a lot of info to offer and also a lot to learn from other mamas.
Of course you have to be invited into someone's home, that's how we build more intimate relationships and a strong trusting net work of families.
I don't think Grammy midwife would invite just anyone into her home Drifter, she was just making a point. But I also think she probably feels very safe where she lives, and safe saying something like that to a bunch of natural loving mamas.
geeesh, again, :duck: I didn't mean to get all into "what" a play date is...we all understand that I think. It's just the dang term...but until I can come up with something better than that...

I kind of like the random intruder-style approach to child/toddler-mingling. If I were not so daring, none of us Mqt. mamas would have even connected in much the same fashion.
I understand the viewpoint of the invite-only playdate...such a very modern idea for a place such as the U.P. It might be a little beyond where some of us are at...at least where I am at. If I had to wait for a playdate to make mama and baby friends...I might still be sitting here alone.
I think that it is great to welcome strangers and perhaps teach them new ways or directions of parenting. People in the U.P. need people like us (Natural Family Living...sometimes known as the crunchy types...) to spread the word on our styles of living. We can only make the world better by sharing our perpectives.
Then, after spending some time with these random intruders, may I decide whether or not I would like to continue my relationship with these people. Everyone deserves a chance!
I do believe that I should welcome anyone and everyone who is interested to commune with my son and me when we are out at, say, the library or the park. I do not believe, however, that everyone has an open invitation to my home. This is where I do the deciding.
We cannot shelter our children from other people. They are forever lurking here and there...I believe that our children need to be exposed to all kinds of people in order for them to develop a healthy understanding of what the world is truly like. We are not teaching acceptance, tolerance, and understanding by monitoring all of the people that our children come in contact with. Yes, we may narrow their exposure to unhealthy influences...but I believe that by being wholly selective we are not teaching our children about thier world in a healthy way.
I think that the play-date is a modern reaction to the unfortunate circumstance of unhelthy or absent parenting. It is not the fault of the child if he or she has not been well-parented. Perhaps, by allowing other children (not selectively the children whose parents are accepted in the circle) to co-milngle with our own, we can do good work. These children may grow to understand and accept our healthier ways of life.
Or not...
Just my two cents:o

Any thoughts, opinions about this new "Little Huskies"? I've checked out the ones in Ann Arbor via the web and it sounds pretty cool. They have strict rules about food/diet and they have a garden and composting and fun things to do...We're probably going to have to have DD in some type of childcare from 3-5:30 Mon-Thursday...:( so I can work. We're part of a small baby sitting co-op here...but I imagine it will take some time to get that going in the Keweenaw. The co-op here works out great though, and it's one parent to two kids usually, so I'm a little nervous nelly about a 4 to 1 ratio and not being in some one's home. Any tips on finding a good babysitter to hang with DD next fall while I teach in my home would be great. I do not know much about Little Huskies. I have read that they will only be accepting full time kids though, so it might not work for what you need. BHK has a 15 hour minimum. However, I work part-time and have had pretty good luck finding in home care. There are lots of college students looking for extra cash, it is just a matter of finding the right one:) Also, MTU is great about being flexible with schedules. Dh could actually take all of the time off needed to watch dd and just go to work an hour or two earlier in the morning. Ideal? No. But it has gotten us through a few times. Just some thought......

CoriBeth,
My dd goes to MTU Preschool and its a lovely program but not going to be any help to you for childcare purposes. Three year olds go on Tues and Thurs. from 9-11 or 1-3 (I think). DD is in the four year old class, MWF. I do have a slight prejudice about Lil' Huskies as our lovely co-op preschool was to be moving down to the new building but the developer rejected our program in favor of the "chain" program they already have going downstate. It ruffled a few feathers I guess:shrug
I personally feel defensive as MTU Preschool has been a parent run school since the 70's and the teachers are known to sling sad kids, encourage total parent participation, allow the younger siblings to tag along, have great field trips and teach things I wouldn't have though dd would absorb. Apparently Uranus has 38 moons:lol

Yooper,
I know that I know nothing about your dd's situation, but I have been doing some of these kinds of things to avoid the knots in the stomach situation w/ my ds. I work, throughout the day, to imagine that whatever it is that causes these knots will go well. I work to not obsess or even lightly think of what kinds of problematic things could or might happen...and to think and envision, rather, that everything will run smoothly.
I know that what I am saying is simple and that you probably know all of this already, but this kind of thing really works for me. I have found that when I am encountering situations that are problematic that thinking about such situations seems to egg on such situations. I do not want to encourage more negativity, so I fight such negativity with positivity (is that even a word?)...then, I figure, the two create, at the very least, a neutral...
I wish you luck in the night time!

RussianThistle, I find your thoughts re: negativity to be "right on". I guess I have always used this way of dealing with things but never put it into words. You are quite articulate, I must say. I personally have had to deal with some things over the years ( 1st husband died of cancer, dd born with handicaps, etc) but by concentrating on the positive things, and not dwelling on the negatives, all resolved and Kids turned out pretty nice people. My daughter used to ask me if I felt sorry for her because she couldnt walk and we would point out to her all the things she COULD do, and nothing stops her now.
The night thing is hard, though, especially kids in the 2-4 year old range, when they are SOOO independant but still so needy..MY tricks were warm bath (try using a bit of lavender oil but NO bubbles if prone to utis), hot milk or cocoa, something with calcium, camomile tea with a bit of honey or tincture/homeopathic, a favorite toy or blanket, etc. May take a while, but they do eventually chill out. If there really is a tummy problem, would a nice tummy massage help, with warm oil? mmmm

Oh my! So glad you did not get hurt! I have never actually witnessed that happening before. How did you actually get on the road near the bridge? I keep yammering to dh that our downtown is so un-user-friendly for visitors (and pedestrians for that matter).
I actually called the Hancock police to ask how, exactly, a person with a stroller (or wheelchair) should go about getting across the bridge. They gave me an answer. It was what I also thought was the best way and it is the way I have been doing it. But it is pretty dangerous. I thought getting the "professional" opinion would make me at least feel like I am doing the best I can. I almost feel like a bad parent strolling (OK, running for my life) across that messy interchange coming from Ripley. Many of my errands are in Hancock and it is annoying to make arrangements to have a car or even to start up a car or such a short trip when I would just walk. I also ride my bike a lot in the summer with dd on a tag-a-long. You are not allowed to ride on the sidewalks in downtown Houghton. You are suppose to ride on the road. NO WAY! So I end up walking the bike with dd wobbling all over. Real PITA. I cannot wait until they reopen the tunnel for the season. That makes bike travel much easier.
Speaking of which.... Today we have a sitter so we can go to the bike store and I can get my very first BRAND NEW BIKE!!!!!! I have never had a new one. Not even as a kid. My current bike I bought used in college. I actually wore it out. Most of the gears are now stripped which is not so safe on these inclines. I took it to the bike store last year to see about refurbishing it and they just shook their heads and said to let it go in peace. It was a nice bike at one point but they said I would have almost a new bike if they replaces everything that was worn out. So much for reuse/reduce/recycle, eh? What amazes me though, is that I can buy a brand new bike (and thus the majority of my spring/summer/fall transportation) for less than one car payment. Yeehaw.

Congrats on the new bike! Needless to say, I'm not much of a driver either. One of the nice things about Marquette is our extensive bike trail network. Dh even biked to work all winter.

Redhot, do you know when is best to dig up crocuses? They are all over a neighbor's yard...I'm gonna "steal" some for my future new land.
If you dig down through the frickin' snow, you could get some now and plant when the &%^*()U snow melts again. Sorry:shy Minor irritation at severe winter storm warning showing through on MDC.
They may or may not bloom this year, but probably will as they can take the abuse. They breed like rabbits (it that seemly to say about plants?) and are such a joy to see(that is, if it's not blizzarding)

I guess I got ahead of myself...asking about transplanting crocuses and the like. Yes, the storm has hit. CAsimir couldn't believe his eyes:eek this morning! I am seriously disappointed by this storm...I didn't really believe it would come! We were really getting into the groove of spending whole days outside. I even got half of my yard raked (and I have a very large yard!).
Sorry to vent here, but I am even more disappointed as today is my premier art show in my hometown, and I live along the one of stormiest sections of M-28. I'm going to brave the storm to be at the snow...a-hem, excuse me, show (I make eclectic jewelry with gemstones and pearls), because I need to get over my sheepishness concerning my art...

What is with the weather :gloomy:
Here in the N.Lower it rained and rained- I almost hydroplaned off the road- I can make the story really funny- but I will pass for right now- all I will say it was a wet road, little car, fast decile truck and one very very long drop off to the right- the aftermath was a very strong beating heart and a very slower driver.
I am not sure what to do- we found a 2800+ sqft house with 4 bedrooms a huge playable basement and right by the water.... Oh, and we can have the animals- problem it is spendy- I think we can swing it though.... aghhhh...

No one should be driving tonight! Someone hit our car (again) sitting on the road outside our house. Dh had it out there so he could clear the driveway. We actually agonized over the best spot to park it in seeing as we had a truck fly into our backyard a few months ago. He saw the whole thing happen as he was in the driveway snowblowing. This is the second time this car has been hit while parked....and it is only 1.5 years old. I am livid. The guy does not have a license and actually tried to drive away until he saw that dh saw him (and he is stuck in a bank). Dh has been outside with the police for an hour. Meanwhile dd is going ape from boredom, we are all hungry, and our night is on hold. The car is drivable. But grrrrrr!
Oh great! The officer had an emergency and drove off with both of their licences and registration! The other guy is stuck in a bank and between the two cars they are blocking the road. They are going to get hit again. This sucks.
Oh double great, another car is in the mix. Turned the corner, panicked, and ditched it in the bank too, luckily not hitting any other cars. Now there is a pile-up outside my house.
I had better go....who knows what will happen next......

I just thought I would let you know that our home daycare (Child Central Station) is going to be starting evening language institutes for children ages 4-8. We will be exploring Danish, German, Spanish, and French. (with hopes to expand to other languages later...) We will also consider providing courses to younger and older children, provided that there is interest.
The first set of classes will begin the week of April 30. The courses will meet once a week from 6-8pm. (A different language each night of the week). And will run for 6 weeks. Culturally based meals will be served for dinner each night, and children will participate in the preparation of a snack prior to departure. Language will be taught indirectly through songs, crafts, play, puppets, shared story book reading, etc.
The cost for the introductory 6 weeks is $75 per language, and will include meals and all materials. Additionally, children will be supplied with a picture dictionary in the respective language.
For more information, please email aahola@charter. net, or call 225-5594. Please direct all inquiries to Amy.

Glad to hear that your trip is going well. HOw was the plane ride?
The drum circle went well, there was not a lot of wood (and no one told us to bring some...we have so much!) and it was kind of muddy. Casimir fell asleep after the first round or so. Drumming felt great! Next time, we hope it can be on the beach! This snow, as disappointing as it may be, will certainly be a mere memory by next week.
Marquette mamas- I just recieved a notice of language classes for kids over there, thought you might be interested.
I'd be totally interested...that is, in about three years:lol I hope that people enroll and that these people are successful in their efforts! That way, they'll still be doing it (and doing it very well!) in three years.
I could crawl the walls today! I mean, I don't think I've ever made this many replies in one day...at least not since I was pregnant. I'm not sure I could get out if I tried! The drift in front of our door is about three feet high...one of our cats went out and sat in it for a minute or two and came back in very annoyed that we let him go out.
Casimir is taking one of the longest naps he's ever taken! What a relief! It feels good to have a little time to waste!
Okay, back to work...I've got dishes to do and diapers to wash!

I don't *have* much more information. We're considering locations, and by considering locations, I mean that anyone who has time and inclination and interest is scouring the internet for affordable, appealing group sites that will let us reserve a spot! I'm currently hoping we settle on South Manitou Island, although the "island" part and the distance and the cost may be an insurmountable obstacle.
I hope not, because it would be a fabulous adventure! I google-mapped some driving times and from Munising it would be 5 hours, 14 minutes, so a long drive, but not unreasonable given what I understand are typical driving times in the UP. If it sounds like something any of you might be interested in PLEASE head on over the thread and weigh in ASAP, and if you are ready to commit, say so in the thread or PM me that I can edit the OP to include you. We must reserve a campground Monday at the latest since they are filling up *fast*.

To bad about Tuesday, Erin. :( I have nothing going on wednesday all day if that would be better for you....or friday after 2. And I always have Sundays off.........well, for now(see below). We'll probably be at the library on Tuesday, if for nothing else, to eat!:lol
But I need to talk to you girls, I'm at a big crossroad and need some advice. Bascially I have a job at the co-op if I want it. And who wouldn't take it, right? Well, here's the thing...it's a 3 dollar pay-cut. We figured it out and we would still be okay(what does that mean anyway) as far as finances. We would not be able to buy the house we were looking at, or any other for that matter. Which I think I'm alright with. Ben has a new "dream" of building his own log cabin for us. He thinks I should take the job. I'm losing sleep over this!!!
This (kinda, sorta)came about after being talked to by our general manager about my pumping. She was asking for any "ideas" for what we can do about it. Mind you, I pump only ONCE in a 6.5 hour period. She was very suprized and seemingly appauled by the fact that I planned on pumping for at least until North turned 1. So, that day, after that shift I called Jamie. Not only would they be okay with me pumping, but she told me that Ben could bring North in and I could nurse him instead of pumping at all! That made me very excited because, who in the world would rather pump if they could just nurse instead?!
So, now I'm making this a novel...sorry about that. I'm just so soo unsure of what I need to do. It's keeping me awake in the middle of the night.....co-op...border grill...co-op....border grill...co-op...? I'm such a change-a-phob that I feel like I might just stay, but I don't think thats what I want to do. I have to decided by Thursday. GAH! Help!
With that said.....any of those other days works for you both?
russianthistle
04-16-2007, 12:01 PM
I can't believe that someone would challenge you as far as the pumping goes. I wish that there were more mom/child-friendly jobs in the area.
I spontaneously say, if you can truly handle the pay-cut, go for the co-op! After reading what you wrote, it is all I can think for my perspective on your situation. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably go for the co-op: You can count on them being cool with you nursing North as long as you please; You will certainly learn much more working at the co-op; You will probably meet more like-minded people; You will work with a phenomenal bunch of people...I could go on and on...Plus, is there any kind of discount involved if you work there? Also, I read in the newsletter, some time ago, that the co-op was working to provide insurance.
Also, I know that it seems like owning a house would be optimal at this point...but, is it really so terrible renting? heck, you could take over the house I'm in when we leave if you wanted...it's only $225! but far from town :(
If you're really torn up about it, flip a coin...I've moved across the country, changed schools, and decided against buying houses all with the help of a coin toss. I wouldn't change those decisions if I had the opportunity to, now.

Amanda and I were hoping to hook up as we traveled back and forth to Curtis but the baby is here..8 1/2 # girl and hvac to boot. We're all tired but all went well. Won't be going down again for awhile.
I've been outside in my t shirt today and it felt GOOD! Maybe?

Lauren, wow, thats bordering on job discrimination to make you feel that your pumping is an "issue". If you can take a pay cut, I think the co op sounds awesome. Which is more stressful for you right now, financial constraints or place of work? Maybe think of it in those terms. Good luck!
I miss hanging with you mqt mamas and I'd love to meet up tomorrow, but its not looking likely. I have to go to Houghton actually for a radio interview tomorrow morning, YIKES! Wednesday afternoon may be possible for me.
Erin, I hope you find your cat! Good cats are hard to come by. I wish you luck:(

:yeah:
Good luck with your job decisions!
Our family, way over here on the West Coast has also had the flu for the past 5 days, and my MIL from Michigan is here and my BIL, and they also got the flu bug. Lots of trips to the bathroom, and we just have the one!
Will LLL meet in July in Houghton/Hancock?

Hooray for the hvac! All in time, we'll meet.
Kyra, I hope you're feeling better, now!
Wednesday works for me!
Still no Flobee. A friend of mine came out tonight to dowse and the rods and the the pendulum pointed to a particular storage shed that belongs to a neighbor of mine. There is apparently no way in. I can't hear him there but could yesterday. We've looked in the windows...nothing. I hope he's just on a vacation somewhere else in the woods...trying to get away from the terror cat for awhile. He usually doesn't wander far.
On the bright side, Casimir went to bed at 8pm...this is unheard of...I'm actually "wasting" time right now.:lol It feels great.
I have been on the edge of sanity, some days, because of the lack of down-time. I am soooo looking forward to spring. Today, I was cleaning my car out, and C. climbed out of the driver's seat, toddled over to a mud puddle, and plopped down in the middle. He squished mud through his fingers and tossed pebbles into the water. I walked about the yard with a mere shirt on today, too!

I hate to be calling on gender stereotypes but...a little boy playing in a mud puddle and throwing rocks, NO WAY!!:lol :lol
Looks like Wednesday it is! What time? 1 okay or something different? North has his 6 month appointment(I cannot believe he's actually a half year old!:dizzy:) at 930 that morning and then we're free the rest of the entire day :)
....and the co-op is currently winning the job race:wink

I vote co-op for a few reasons.
1) it sounds like it is a job more nurturing to your essential self.
2) The pay cut may be temporary, raises happen.
3) Employee discount!
4) Time available to nurse your son is invaluable....

Early this morning I take my over due belly and I for a walk:lol I went through the ski trails that are at our back door and I see buds all over the trees, and life running around, a little nippy but as the sun came up over the buildings, the church bells ringing, the kids getting ready for school. I realized something, I live were my roots were planted over a 100 years ago, this place, it calls me. With the birth of spring and everything being made new, I feel new and reborn. Heres to spring and new life in one of the most beautiful places in this world.
Take time to smell the flowers and see the things that are all around you before the snow hits again:lol

Babycatcher,
I feel the same way about this place. I am living very close, too, to where my family chose to live eons ago. There is something that calls to me here, I often say it is the beautiful lake. I went to the Lake with Casimir yesterday. He is a Pisces and a true water baby. He is enthralled by the sand and the water at the beach. When I was in Colorado, I missed something...I felt so far away from water and the mountains were no match for that energy.
Great wishes to you for a gentle birth!

One last thing...my cat is missing :( He is the best cat...I've had him for nearly 10 years. He's been missing since Tues...very unlike him. He doesn't wander far. I feel like he's trapped somewhere...We've looked and looked and yelled and yelled...I feel like I hear him...but it could all be in my head.
My cat went missing for about 3 weeks one time- my nephew had let him out and I was sure he was gone- my guess- he was seeding the neighborhood (if you know what I mean) guess who went to the vet and got fixed the very day he came back home. :lol
I hope you find your kitty- I have lot a cat before (for good) and I know how much that sucks.

Good Morning!
What a great morning it is...The sun shines strong, Casimir's dancing to "Sugar Magnolia" while making his "cat" sounds, and I am getting a minute to type. I've been cutting off the computer time lately, as it creates too much conflict between CAsimir and me. He wants to type...I want to type...yeah.
Yesterday, Casimir picked up a little dog and said, "Woof-woof." It was adorable.
Still no kitty, but I swear I heard him again yesterday...it's hard to tell with all the birds singing and the river talking all around me. I noticed that the chives are coming up in our front flower beds. I am going to put Casimir's play clothes on him today...I'll rake while he squeezes mud through his little fingers.
Thanks for all of the well-wishing for this kitty...His name is Flobee. Keep wishing him well when you think of it! I have not yet lost hope!
Enjoy the beautiful day!

Ahhh! What a beautiful day!!No fire in the wood stove and the house is not frigid! I've even got the doors and windows open. I'm sure it won't last but I'm going to breathe the air while I can.
COME HOME FLOBEE!!!
We also have passed around the "grunge" but are somewhat on the mend at last. There's things to do outside..Also, the fashionably late grandbaby...

What a day! Amazing, I must say!
Yesterday, we dug up old, really old, gardens and started to work the soil and put new things in place of old. I moved some Day Lilies from a neighbor's yard to my own, along with some crocuses (croci? :lol ). Did you know that Day Lilies are edible (and a very nice addition to a June or July salad)?
This week I'm going to add some Flox and Daisies. I love this diggin' in the earth. This is the first summer of many past in which I may not be moving until the growing season comes to a close. Last summer, I didn't move, but I was too new to this motherhood to revamp the yard.
So, we spent much of the day planting raking and turning earth. I made a nice tomato basil soup with local fresh basil and even some baby chives from my yard...then, felt the urge to get the bikes in order. Casimir rode in the baby seat for the first time. He had a long day! Fell asleep in the bike seat despite the rocky gravel road we traversed.
I feel so vivacious when the sun is out and really allows us a good dose. I needed it! I let it beat on me for two solid days...it felt great. I will get an excellent night's sleep, tonight.
Still no kitty. I can accept that he might not return. I feel like I can separate myself from the sadness...and, yes, while it is sad, and quite honestly, depresses me if I focus on it too much, I am glad to have had Flobee in my life for as long as he was...
On a not so depressing note:

Thank you for mentioning it. I will forward this to a couple of friends of mine who need the info. I might come but seem to have already double-booked myself, somehow:shrug ...who knows. I know that I can get a couple people to show!

I am without computer for the time being...it just croaked last week. So it goes...some days I feel like I felt when I quit smoking...I feel like I'm idle at times...so much more time without that damned machine!
My land is tilled and I am getting ready to start my seedlings. I am sooo excited for the growth this summer will bring!
Good day, ladies. I will be back when I can squeak in a spare moment at a random computer.
Congratulations to GrammyMidwife and Babycatcher!

You ladies are making me so homesick! I am a transplanted yooper. I grew up in MQT until high school and then moved to the houghton area and graduated from HHS. My family has a place in Bootjack on Portage Lake.
Right now DH and I live in Jacksonville, FL. It's so different down here and I want to move back to midwest as soon as we can. However, DH is from here and his parents are here and his mom is working on getting a lung transplant so we have a few more years here.
When I was in high school, I never really thought or cared about NFL. Althoug
