I am in Chippewa County. :cold: :joy: :eyesroll That 'bout sums it up, LOL

Sweet!! I just moved here, to the Soo, in May from down-state. This is where my husband grew up, so Ive been visiting here for several years. I am pretty excited to be here! Quite a bit going on in the way of an AP community, much to my surprise. =) And I enjoy the cooler weather.

I wasnt aware we had an ap community. I work a lot though, so I dont get out much. I will be attending Moms Group on Monday evening though. It is through the Care Net Pregnancy Center. Maybe I will see you there?

Oh I went to that back in June! I dont remember everyone there, but I was the one talking all car-seat crazy, if you were there. :lol

I am actually headed to Minnesota tomorrow and wont be back until the end of the month. But August 2nd, the B.E.S.T group (breastfeeding education and support team) is sponsoring an ice cream social down at Project Playground to celebrate World Breastfeeding Month! 12:30-2pm. Its free, and should be lots of fun.

The BEST group is also starting up this "sling initiatve". They have all of these ring slings made, and if new moms attend one of the breastfeeding classes and breastfeeds for at least 2 weeks, they get a free sling! I am going to helping the moms learn how to use these slings, and am also working on starting up a babywearing group in the area. There is a CNM who will be accepting patience in January 09, and a new OB/GYN coming to town next month whose wife is a lay midwife!!! I dont know for sure if she will be practicing or not, but I have my fingers crossed extra tight that she will!

Anyways! You should be seeing more and more babywearing as the months go on. If I have anything to do with it, you will!

Does anyone know anything about Doula training classes in Marquette? I have heard through the grapevine (the ladies who run the breastfeeding support team here in the Soo) that there is going to be one? Any info on this would be awesome! It would save me a trip to Ann Arbor!

Yes yes, My friend and i trained 2 ladies about month ago. Lauren who is on here and Maria....We do our traing thru our Doula Group called Marquette Doula Services .We will be dong another training soon.( date not known of yet)

Hi, my husband has accepted a job in Ironwood and we're moving there next month. We have a 9 month old daughter, so I'd love any recommendations for mom/baby related groups and activities in the UP. We'll be living in Ironwood initially, but we'd eventually like to live in Marquette (my husband would commute). So any suggestions for things to do? I've been trying to figure out where the closest LLL meetings are and my best guess is either Marquette or Duluth? Any attachment parenting groups?

Welcome to the U.P.
Unfortunetly Marquette does not have an LLL group although I think there is a breastfeeding support group starting. We don't really have any attached parenting groups but we have a lot of attached parents LOL! There is a MOMs group but I don't know when they meet. Otherwise there is an informal group of us that get together for playgroups usually weekly.

Also I think there was another Mama that posted on this thread that was moving to Ironwood, you may want to check the thread for her user name. Might be a couple pages back.

I went to Moms group last Monday, and was promptly reminded why I havent gone in 2 years! After listening to about 5 women bash foster parents (they have apparently all had their kids in foster homes) I got to hear about how horrible everyone's life is. It was pretty depressing. Not sure I'm going back to the next one. Maybe we can meet at Project Playground sometime instead?

Thanks, we can't wait to get there!

Hi Shannon, Sorry I won't be in town to play... there is the wonderful Chutes and Ladders park at the waterfront, we have a wonderful new library if it rains (hope not) or lovely shops and a Saturday market in Hancock. Also great hiking trails in both Houhgton and Hancock. If you feel like a little drive of 10 miles or so you can venture out to McLain State Park, a straight shot out of Hancock up the canal, great beaches, a super cool lighthouse and great playground. There are some great restaurants too, Ambassador for pizza and stuff, Lunch Bag for Soups and Sammos and sweet treats, Suomi is famous for breakfast, or the ever popular Ming's Buffet. Have fun and post back to let us know what was fun for your family. P.S. No time for spell check, mia culpa... Marcee

Do you (or anyone) have a good recipe for jams or preserves? We have been picking blueberries, too! There is an awesome field out here near the Soo. My dd has been having a blast! She just goes through eating and eating and eating them. I wish I could spend 5 hours in one day out there. She would never tolerate that. Usually we get 2-3 hours at a time. I have about 18 cups accumulated.

Its in Raco, down M-28. As soon as you hit the sign for Raco, the Raco Lodge is on the right and you turn down that street. And then from there, oh gosh, I cant even really remember, but I think you just stay right. Its free, you just bring your buckets and find a place that hasnt been picked over. But you could seriously pick there till the end of time and still not have it all gone. Its literally acres and acres of wild berries. I want to go back and out Thursday evening if I can. We found a really great place in the shade where the berries were massive. We didnt get to spend much time there because Scarlett started getting super whiney. But thats what Ide like to do on Thursday and if that day works for you, you can follow us. Im gonna try to bring another friend and her 5 year old dd.

For jam recipes, see the insert in the pectin you use. I have made the Sure-Jell kind, but recommend the Pomona kind (as you use WAY less sugar). You can do cooked or frozen. Jams are super easy! I did it myself for the first time (in my life!) after a particularly good blueberry picking.

Last night, Qerratsmom's husband and I went to the great mother-lode of blackberries in the woods and picked until we could not see what color the berries were. Tasty blackberries abound!!!!

Unlike Redhot, I do not care fore cooler nights just yet. It is not Autumn yet, and I am not ready for the cold. I have so many tomatoes (too) on my plants and just 8 or 10 have actually ripened.

Over the weekend, we moved from Deerton to Rumely (did I already write that?). And, yesterday Casimir and I visited the Laughing Whitefish Falls. He walked almost all the way back! It was amazingly beautiful. I will go back there when the maples are ablaze!

Do you know any of the midwives in the area?

Is there a good website to learn more about the UP, specifically the climate, growing season, snowfall, average lows and highs, etc?

When I moved to MI my dh had grown up here, but not been back in 30 years. He remembered lots of snow and fun, but down here, it snows, then melts, snows and ices over, then melts, then snows again, then melts again.
It really sucks! I was looking forward to snow all winter, so we could snowmobile, showshoe, ski, build snow forts, etc.... but none of that is really feasable here. So, because of climate, cheaper land up north, more beautiful natural surroundings, lots of reasons, we're looking at the UP.
Appreciate any advice, info, etc.
I'm a California girl, only been here 3 years, so any info would not be repetitive for me. Thanks!

I do know the midwives here.

There (usually) is snow here all winter...to the point where April, even May rolls around and crocuses have to push their way through the snow. You can do all of the above: build snow forts, snowshoe, etc. and you have to to stay sane.

Land is certainly cheaper here...see here:
http://www.uparidx.com/idx/ncentral/bigc/residential/browse.php

It is absolutely gorgeous! And there is very little population (which is a good thing to me). There is a nice natural living community, I think.

The only problem I find is the work situation. There is not a lot of work here that pays well. It all depends on what you and your dp do.

My sis (who grew up here) lives in CA and is looking to come back...where were you in CA?

From what you write you'd probably like it here....

I'm a doula and massage therapist. I'm a student midwife and I wouldn't move till I was ready to take on clients as a primary midwife, so it would be at least another year.
DH is thinking about doing some seasonal trucking...
and we'd be homesteading, cause we're into that and cause it cuts the cost of living.
We'd like to build our own eco house and put in solar/wind/geothermal/other to help keep us off the grid as much as possible.

at the moment, I live in Marshall. It is sad, it's lost so much industry/jobs since we moved here 3 years ago... lost State Farm, Eaton, Lear and now Marshall Brass has laid off over 100 people and is/probably is closing too.
The only major industry left is the hospital.
It's not quite the same as we expected when we moved here. DH lived here from birth to 18yrs, but then went in the military and he hadn't lived here since he was 18!!! Needless to say, things have changed quite a bit since.
What do you mean it's "quite the place"? Don't worry, you can't offend me!

Wow, small world. I wonder if our partners know each other, since it is such a small town. By "quite the place" I mean it in a not-so-nice way... DP's parents are tough people to take, very small town-ish, small mindedness, and stuck in their ways. They live in a sort of run down part of town(right by oaklawn actually), or at least their home is very run down and it just bugs me to go visit. And it seems like everywhere you go, there's someone there from Marshall. That town is going to take over the world, I swear.

Damn that fountain..... (hahahahaha)

I do a lot of things in the slow cooker. Roast is excellent to do because you can cook it all day on low with the potatoes and carrots and meat altogether. We brown the roast in the skillet then put the roast in the roaster. After that we add cream of mushroom and beef bullion to the droppings and then dump it on top of the roast and veggies.

Oh I should have tried cream of mushroom soup. That's what mine was missing last night. It turned out okay just not creamy!

Hey everyone!

Sorry to just jump in, it seems like there's no place here for us Soobies! (Sometimes I feel like the Soo isn't even in the UP!) Anyhow, DH and I decided to move this summer, to either Houghton or Marquette. I'm a direct care worker, so I can get a job anywhere...

But which place is better? Which has more nature centered activities? Which has the least expensive rent? We're looking to make like minded friends, are there any established AP play groups in those areas?

I, personally, would NOT live there, ever...no matter how cheap the rent. I think that Bonnenuit is being diplomatic in saying she's not sure about the environment. I think that you'd probably not like it there...there is said to be more trouble there than you might see in other places. I think it can be somewhat depressing. It's one of those places where people sacrifice a nice place to live to save some dough...Sorry to be so gruff and all, but I really just have a negative picture of it all.

I might guess that rent might be cheaper near Houghton...but I could be wrong. Both Marquette and Houghton are college towns.

I've had a lot of luck living about 20 miles from Mqt. For some time, I paid $225 for a one bedroom loft (only 500-600 sq. ft.) w/ a gorgeous yard, etc. Then I paid $425 for a two bedroom, say, 900 sq. ft. both places were like 20miles out of town.

It might be cheaper in Negaunee (which is close to Marquette...). Marquette tends to be high, rent-wise. I'd bet you'd pay $800-1000/mo. for a three bedroom in Mqt. I could be wrong... It all depends on how close you want to be to town.

I love being near Mqt. I think it's great here!

Thanks for the invite on the carpooling. I might be interested, sometime. I usually go to town once a week and get all my stuff done in that day...some weeks I'm not very successful.

The morning sickness (which I didn't have w/ Casimir) started the very day I hit 8 wks. It's been a couple of days now of all-day uselessness, and I hate it! Been walking each day, hoping to get all those funky things outta my body. I can't go weeks and weeks being useless! I can't cook or clean or play or do regular things at all...I couldn't unless someone threatened something like beheading...then I might make myself. Looking forward to the second trimester.

See you at the meeting.

The rent in Marquette isn't always high you just have to shop around. I found a couple do able houses when I was looking to rent, but like RT said, I'd try outside of Marquette but near it, because I LOVE living here.

The Breastfeeding support meeting is Sept. 22 at 11 am.

Now, the location...is it the place kind of tucked behind closed-doors on the other side of Tu Kaluthia? Where the baby grand is? where they have concerts and stuff? I'm thinking that that is what's across from the children's area.

It'll be tough to get C. in there...he is obsessed w/ the trains at the library.

Oh, and MPJJJ, perhaps what I wrote last night about the high rent is not totally correct. Bonnenuit is right, if you shop around, you may very well find some fab. place for cheap. Scope it out, mama!

The conference is not very workable for children who like to move about. It is small and very boring. At least, in the other spot, there is plenty of room for running in circles (which is one of the things that Casimir LOVES to do these days).

It might be too early for me to be posting this, but I think DD has the chicken pox! We were exposed last week when we went to visit my sister in Lansing. Her dd was getting these little bumps that we thought were flea bites (even though nobody else was getting them, and they dont have pets). But then the little girl that my sister watches 3 days a week has the pox for sure. She didn't have any lesions at the time, but I am pretty sure my dd put the other kids' binky in her mouth, possibly even used her sippy cup. It is pretty likely.. (this was last Wednesday)

I have noticed a low-grade fever the past 24 hours with my DD. Not high enough to concern me, though. And today I do see two spots on her back. So I am thinking that probably she does have them!!

I know that there aren't too many Sault folks here, but anybody is more than welcome to come over and play if you want your child exposed. I will keep y'all updated on her progress if you are interested.

If your DD does have chickenpox, we can set up a playdate. I have some sicktime saved up that I can use, and I have been wanting to spend some time with my kiddo's, so it would be a good opportunity. It's very rare that wild chickenpox pops up anymore, and I don't want my kids to have to get boosters as an adult. :(

Hey Redhotmama,

We started the process in February and recieved our license in July. We had to attend an orientation and recieved the paperwork, which consisted of background checks, fingerprinting paperwork, parenting assessments, and medical clearances.

We were able to get all of that done within 3 weeks. We also had to get a reference from our landlord, and vaccine records for our pets.

Then she set up a home visit, where she had a quick walk through of our home, and asked us some questions about our application. She talked to the kids for a few minutes, and then wrote up our homestudy to submit to the state.

It took about a week and a half to recieve online approval, and then about another 2 weeks to recieve our license in the mail.

We recieved a call that wasn't right for us, and we're back to waiting... not so patiently, LOL. But we're planning to move to the Marquette area this summer, so there should be more foster opportunities available for us. :)

I am so curious and interested in your foster journey. How did you come to realize you wanted to sign up? What criteria are you looking for in a placement (gender, ages, siblings, etc.)? Was the inspection uncomfortable at all? Sorry to be a pest....it just seems so amazing to be able to help others in this way.

We have lost several nieces to the state. Our last niece, we chose to back out of the adoption process, so that the foster parents could proceed. That was a mistake. We decided that the chances of more nieces/nephews going into care were high, and we wanted to be the first ones called this time.

At first we wanted one child, ages birth to 4 (to keep birth order in our family.) Then we were called for a sibling group of 3 under 4, and our hearts melted. That placement didn't work out (another foster family was chosen), but that was enough to make us realize that we do have room in our hearts and our home for a sibling group. Right now we are licensed for 4, but we are about to bump that back down to 2, because I am in the process of opening up a daycare. State rules that when a family is licensed for foster care and daycare, they can have no more than 8 children in the home.

Yes, the interviews were uncomfortable and very invasive. We had to revisit painful experiences from our past, I did a lot of crying over that period. But overall, it was very positive. Our references were glowing, our licensing worker was very nice and supportive, and it was as painless as it could have possibly been. Emotionally taxing, but worth it.

From what I have read, it starts on the torso.... my nieces were on the tops of her shoulders and on her shoulder blades to begin with. They looked like flea bites.

And yes, I would definitely like to get together then! DD still hasnt gotten any bumps. She had a spot or two that I thought were CP, but they went away the next morning. I have been checking her all week, and nothing. It could take up to 2 weeks from exposure, or perhaps even longer. Keep me updated!

I've found that there are quite a few midwives down here that are NOT on the MMA website, so it's a bit confusing... whether there are or not, midwives in a certain area.

I just have to say how happy I am right now! DD and I went to a regular ol' playgroup today and I met TWO moms who breastfeed into toddlerhood! Here! In the Soo!! I have been actively nursing my 2.5 y/o in public since we moved here in May, in hopes of attracting other moms who nurse longer, with no luck. And then today, TWO! I am so happy!

And the Chippewa county breastfeeding support group has its first meeting October 20th! Wahoo!!! :joy:

No chicken pox, it was a false alarm. It's too bad, really, I was looking forwards to staying home and cuddling with my little ones. Now I have to save my sick leave for when we're really sick.

Oh, and what playgroup were you referring to? Moms group? We used to have breastfeeding support groups here in Kinross, but nobody ever came, so they shut down for several years. I'm glad to hear they are starting up again. :thumb

It wasn't Moms group. It was something through the Great Start Collaborative. I think this one is geared towards toddlers and pre-schoolers, but I cannot remember exactly.

I am excited about the BF group, but trying not to get TOO excited. I am just going to advertise A TON and hope that it pans out.

Too bad about the CP. Scarlett hasn't gotten anything.... I wonder if she just has a natural immunity? When things like this start going around and she doesnt get it, it makes me that much more confident in my decision not to vaccinate.

Are there any homebirth midwives that will go to the Soo? I am not pregnant, but a friend of mine is. She would really like a homebirth, but is not set on going unassisted. She refuses to have another baby at this hospital, so her only other option is Petoskey. Kind of a drive. Thanks!

Does anyone have a good idea of what the current childbirth options are in Marquette?

We're currently trying to conceive AND looking at buying a house in Marquette. Our lease in Bessemer (Ironwood) is finished in August, but we'll renew it if the only childbirth options in Marquette involve hospitals. I had a hospital birth with my first child and I really don't want to repeat the experience, but I also do not want to do an unassisted home birth. My list of midwives in MI doesn't seem to include Marquette... Help?

The greatest doctor in the world is here (at least, that's what I think), family practice-wise. Also, there is a great midwife team. There's a doula network with a few different options. And, perhaps, by the time you conceive, there could be another midwife practicing (she has a small baby, right now, and is not practicing).

PM me for particular info.

The biggest Elk I have ever seen, approaching the highway! Ive only ever seen Elk on farms.. never in the wild. This thing was ridiculous. Recommendations for Chinese (or other Asian) restaurants in Marquette that are vegetarian friendly (preferably TOFU not just veggies)? Hands down, the Thai House on Third Street, across from Valle's Market (which used to be Jack's IGA). I think it's the corner of Third and Magnetic...or it's close to there.

They have a great Pad Thai and several yummy currys. Yum.:eat:
This is my favorite place.

The Great Hunan, set back off US41 after the Westwood Mall, is pretty good, too...and it's Chinese.

There is also a Chinese Restaurant in Munising that is good. They have good Pad Thai, too. It's located on the corner of Superior (one block down--away from the lake-- from M-28) and Maple.

I second Thai House!! It's soo so good, and most everything on their menu can be made vegetarian(with tofu too!). I've had many things on the menu but Pad Asparagus will always be my very fave. Pra Ram is also super good, if you like peanut sauce.

The Chinese restaurants I've experienced in town are not so good. Not many veggie options and I don't think I remember tofu at any of them.

Man, I wish I had the money to go eat Thai House right this minute!!

Russianthistle, I am so happy you're brewing a young one, what a great time of the year to be snuggly and nest-y and maternal.
We lived in Misawa, which is ALL the way north on Honshu, the main island. It was all pine forests and rugged Pacific beaches and towering mountains and rural rice paddies and natural geothermic mineral baths. We dream of moving back some day. Maybe as JET teachers after the kids are grown? In the meantime, it is a good thing the co-op carries yummy miso and all the seaweed my girls can eat. I went to Okinawa twice, what a beautiful place, too.
Ladies, the skiing is fine this year. I am loving being a yooper. Powder up to your knees and spandex clad men zooming around. Life is good!
