View Full Version : How do you keep kiddos from rolling off?

DD is 10 months old and has fallen off the bed twice now. I thought we had fixed it about a month ago when she did it the first time by building her a nest of pillows and blankets, but she knocked it all out of the way and rolled off again today. :(
What do you all use to block the side of your bed? How do you like it? How much was it?
I dug back a ways in the messages and found the snug tuck pillow. I like the look of it, but want to shop around before I buy something since I can only afford to do this once. Definately on a budget the cheaper the better, no more than $100. I'm looking for something to cover one side and possibly the foot of our king sized bed. TIA!

i started by trying to teach ds how to back off the bed. he didn't really 'get' it until 11 months or so. i am not confident he wouldn't fall off in his sleep or while really sleepy though.
so, i put our mattress on the floor. now at 12 months, 1 week i have put the box springs under the mattress, but not the frame.
seemed safest and least expensive to me! he really enjoys being able to climb in and out as well.

Hi,
Can you situate your bed so the babies side is against the wall? I know they make net type rails that fit on twin beds for toddlers...not sure if that would work for you. I think putting the mattress is a good idea as well and also some soft stuff on the floor just in case.

We have our bed in the corner with spare sheets stuffed between walls and bed so theres no falling on 2 sides. We start out with DD in the far corner by the walls, but she is rolling all the way to the other side of our king bed.
No problems at night when DH and I are with her, but for naps and the couple of hours before we join DD in bed I worry about the rolling.
Also she is not crawling yet and her rolling is pretty random. She doesn't normally seem to be rolling to get anywhere; she's just rolling for the fun of it or to get comfortable. So I don't think she's to the point where I can teach her to back off quite yet. And I've seen the safety 1st rails, but they seem so small. I'd need a lot of them to cover 2 sides of my king bed.
So far it's either a snug tuck pillow, something similar homemade, or putting the bed on the ground and putting pillows around it. Thanks for the advice ladies. :)

we have king size futon on the floor - DD sometimes falls "out" of the bed, but she keeps right on sleeping! :wink

Okay, so with DS#1 we put up the rail on the side but it had mesh and I wasn't confident he wouldnt somehow get his head stuck. We can't put our bed against a wall so I took a big piece of cardboard and slipped it between the mattress and the rail and it made a wall. Sounds silly but it worked for us. Now I have a snug tuck pillow on that side and really like it.

DS sleeps in the crook of my arm (nestled into my armpit), or on my chest. So rolling hasn't been a problem thus far. When he does start climbing around a bit, we'll either move the bed up to the wall, or try and find one of those mesh barrier things to keep toddlers from falling out of the bed. We never had a problem with DD falling out of the family bed. But our new bed is much much higher than our old one, so I'm a little nervous about it.

Hi!
We attached a crib to the side of our bed (with a side of it taken off) using tie-downs to attach it to the bed frame.
A friend bought the kind of rails that you put on a bed in the hospital or for a sick person at home, then put a big sheet of cardboard in between the rail and the bed, then a blanket over it all....

I've done many different configurations with my bed. When he first started rolling I put the crib (with one side off) against my bed and the other side of the bed against the wall. That worked pretty well at keeping him from rolling off (but he was only a side to side roller, he never rolled to the bottom of the bed). He never actually slept in the crib, but if he rolled too far he didn't fall. Then I got rid of the crib and just put my mattress on the floor. I kept one side against the wall and he slept on that side (I had one of those mesh rails on that side too, with blankets stuffed down so he couldn't get stuck). I slept next to him so he couldn't really roll anywhere, but if he did he was close to the floor. When he was around a year old he learned to get off the bed feet first. A few months of practice and I felt comfortable putting the bed back up. So now we have a big bed (2 twins together, about the size of a king). I still have the mesh rail on one side (not against the wall). On the other side I have a step stool that he uses to get up (and sometimes down, but not always). I sleep on the side opposite the mesh rail, but I keep a couple pillows down on the floor on my side, just in case he rolls out (has never happened).
