Has anyone used a non-hormonal IUD? What was your experience with it? I recently spoke to my gynecologist and she suggested a non-hormonal IUD as an alternative to a birth control pill. She explained that the only side effect is heavy monthly periods.

I had one for about a year. I loved the not-having-to-think-about-it factor, but was not thrilled with the heavier, more painful menstrual cycles. I'd say it was worth it and am considering getting one again. :)

I had the progesterone core one before I had dd. I had a lot of trouble with the pill and migrains so had to find something else. Wish I had known more about natural family planning then.

I did not like it, I spotted all the time. And crapped if i did any exercise. But I had not had kids yet so not sure if it would be different now, it was so damn sore to put in I am not to do it again.

I had one inbetween kids for about a year. I was happy with it, Like Annkiss, I had heavier periods and some cramping but it was worth it for the not thinking about it factor, and knowing with almost certainity that I wasn't going to get pregnant. At that point not getting pregnant was more important than heavy periods.

Now I have Merina and am happy with almost no periods, light spotting at best.

Hi

I am on my second IUD in 5 years (baby in between) and am going to have it out on Monday to ttc again!

I have not had any problems and not had heavier periods with them. I have noticed even less cramping since using a mooncup (http://mooncup.co.uk). I have a day of 'stickiness' then a heavier day then by day 4 it is all gone.

It was a bit uncomfortable for a day or so after 'installation' then I spent a few days freaked out that this thing was inside me - like I did when I got my ears pierced years ago! But from there on in it has been fine.

I had only ever heard bad things about them and was reluctant to consider an IUD but I have a blood clotting disorder which means I can't use hormonal contraception and also that I don't want to be pregnant unexpectedly as I need treatment whilst pregnant. My Well Woman Clinic suggested it and said I could always have it removed if it didn't suit me. I spoke to several friends and realised that seveeral of them had an IUD and had had no problems at all so I thought I would try it and see.

After this next pregnancy (fingers crossed) I will have another one as I feel comfortable with it.
