There's a book about baby sleep habits that has been recommended here, but I cannot remember what it's called. (Maybe it's by a British author?) Not trying to train or anything, but I am curious about infant sleep cycles. Can anyone help? TIA!

Perhaps you're thinking of the No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. Lots of info about sleep cycles in there.

Thanks!

As it turns out, I was thinking of The Contented Little Baby Book. But that's a help too!

Replying to myself in case anyone does a search - Contented Little Baby is just awful, possibly even worse than Weissbluth!

You know, I have to say that I thought Weissbluth's info on sleep to be pretty interesting and informative. I think as long as you read it with a huge grain of salt, you can get a lot out of his research.

For example, he has a section about how young babies get some really good REM sleep in if they're put right back to bed, like within one hour of waking up in the morning. I knew my ds liked this, but didn't pay enough attention to getting him right back to sleep until I read this. It's kind of counter-intuitive, you know, when your baby seem sleepy but has only been up for half an hour.

Anyway, just my two cents.

I too found Weissbluth's information on the sleep needs/patterns of infants very helpful, and it assisted me in figuring out a better routine for my twins. However, I would toss the rest of his book which addresses his methods for getting babies to sleep (often by letting them cry).

Yes, I hear what you're both saying - I mostly found both books awful because of the tone. "Contented" lays out a schedule saying, for example, "Baby MUST be in bed by 6 pm." KWIM? Weissbluth is informative, though his conclusions are so wrong.
