so my DH is all about the homebirth and midwives. he says things like "women have been doing this for millenia, what do they really need OBs for? did the human female body go stupid in the last 50 years?" and "they tell a woman her whole pregnancy not to take drugs and not to lay on her back, but what's the first two things they want you to do when it's time to give birth?" but this story really takes the cake for me!

yesterday was DH's open enrollment briefing for ALFAC (you know the comercials with the duck). the woman giving the briefing says that AFLAC will pay out to female employees who have to take some unpaid maternity leave, just like if they had to take time off work for a serious injury or disease. my DH stands up and asks "does that include women having a homebirth?" she says no, you have to go to the hospital and DH tells her that's stupid because "birth is not an injury and pregnancy is not a disease" and if they'll pay out to the woman with a baby who went to the hospital, they should also pay out to the woman with a baby who stayed home because "they both ended up with a new baby". she didn't really have anything to say after that and by then all his co-workers were staring at him like he was insane. he was practically beaming as he recounted this to me over dinner proudly.

that's just his special brand of supportive!

kudos to your dh for being vocal about an excellent point. i hope he gets that presenter thinking.

too bad insurance doesn't cut homebirth's a break since hb's don't really cost much. the more mom's encouraged and supported to homebirth, the lower the cost of insurance or the more it can go to mom's who need the hospital. maybe more people can start to afford insurance again.
