I am a single mom of a 22 m.o. dd and am hoping to go to school to be a cpm or lm (midwife non nurse) but, am trying to find someone who's been through it to give me advice. I know that I will qualitfy for FAFSA and what not but, what do you do about childcare when you're single and have to move somewhere new to go to school and when you won't know when you'll have to leave at night? It seems a little scary I guess but I know it's what I'm meant to do.

I'm not a midwife but I do hope to be one someday.. Right now I'm a labor doula. I am lucky enough to have my mom and sister living close to me. I used to be able to rely on DS's dad, but now - not so much. My dad owns a small business and is usually available too. I use my family as my backup in case a client goes into labor and I need a babysitter.
I was enrolled to start midwifery school last month, then my school lost accreditation. :bawl Now my only option is to attend school 3+ hours away. I'm not sure I would be able to do it if I I had to move far away and didn't have my family nearby.
What state are you in? Can you enroll in a distance learning program and stay close to your support network? I'm in FL and our laws here are ridiculous surrounding midwifery. Check with your state laws. Do you even have to go to school? Can you become a midwife by apprenticeship?
Check out all your options. You can try posting on the birth and beyond section, there are so many wise MW mamas there.

I live in North Dakota so it's really not even an option to practice here the only midwife in the state is over 3 hours away and so I think the distance edu. is out the window but, I think my mom may or may not be willing to relocate to help me, I've sorta been trying to talk her into it becasue my dad and her are seperated so she really has nothing to lose. Well anyways I'll try the birth and beyond board like you said and thank you for your help.
