medical marijuana during pregnancy article

Has anyone read the article that can be found through a link at the www.mothering.com homepage? What are some of your opinions on the topic?

I read that article long ago (I am thinking it is the one about the woman with HG)...

I do totally believe in medicinal use of marijuana. I have not used it (recreationally) since 2000 but have always felt that it was way less harmful than alcohol in our society as a whole.

It does truly work, with less side effects, for some people when other medicines will not work or cause too many neg side effects.

I am also an advocate of medicinal marijuana. I'm not sure what to think about it's use in pregnancy, except that when a woman has an illness that requires prescription drugs, and potentially harmful ones at that, and marijuana would do the trick more effectively and efficiently, I don't see the harm in it.

My husband is a non-advocate, but then he hates every kind of drug, even caffeine and aspirin. :p

I haven't read the article, but I have a good friend that is a Lactation Consultant. She says that THC will not pass to the baby during pregnancy, but it does in breastmilk. So, if that's true, I would see nothing wrong w/ it during pregnancy.

The article made me a little uneasy. I am all for medical use of marijuana, and don't have strong objections to a little recreational use either, as long as it does not become a habit. And I think in the author of the article's case, using mj during her pregnancy sounded like it was absolutely the thing to do. But the tone of the article overall made me think that many recreational users could use her experience as an excuse to keep smoking during pregnancy. I don't think I could put ANYTHING at all questionable into my body during pregnancy unless it was absolutely necessary. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it seemed more of a "this is why marijuana is okay during pregnancy" article than a "in this particular case marijuana worked, but be cautious about when to use it yourself" article, which I think it should have been.
