One of my favorite singers is Lucinda Williams. I was listening to an older album this morning and was overcome with emotion because the song matched perfectly with a conversation I have with myself and the baby about birth. Here's the lyrics:

"It's okay.
You don't have to be afraid.
There's nothing to worry about, 'cause we've got it made.
It's just a simple matter of letting me into your love.
If you let that feeling come over you, then there's nothing more that you can do. Just let it go...let it go.
If it's love you want, hold out your arms.
It's alright here. It's safe and warm.
It's okay to feel good; that's the way it should be.
Everything we have is fresh and new. I will open up myself to you, l
like a rose...like a rose. "

Does anyone else have any lyrics/songs that seem like they could be interpreted to be about birthing?

funny - i was just thinking about this this afternoon in the car... this one made me cry thinking of labor and birth - getting through the pain to get to the wonderful!!

Go ahead and cry now
Just give in to the madness
The only way to feel your joy
Is to first feel the sadness

Go ahead and sail now
Just give in to the ocean
The only way to tame your fear
Is to feel her rocky motion

You're a long way from somewhere you call home
There's a place in your heart, you're not alone

All of the happiness you seek
All of the joy for which you pray
Is closer than you think
It's just 100 tears away

Go ahead and listen
Just give into the voices
You think you're backed into a corner
But you've got so many choices
You can't save all the hungry
The lonely or the dying
Sometimes we wanna give up
But fools like us keep trying

You're a long way from some place you feel safe
Peace of mind comes from just one place

All of the happiness you seek
All of the joy for which you pray
Is closer than you think
Is just 100 tears away

Whatever it is that'll make you feel good
You can have if you want, if you knew that you could
You can have it all baby

You're a long way from somewhere you call home
There's a place in your heart you're not alone

All of the happiness you seek
All of the joy for which you pray
Is closer than you think
It's just 100 tears away

Starmites is a really silly musical - but this song is sweet and a lovely lullabye for a little boy baby:

Say good night, I'll be the light, and pray your soul to keep
It's been fun, but day is done, and even heroes sleep.
Close your eyes, and maybe then you'll fly
to the planets and back again
And bring those dragons to their woeful end
pretend and close your eyes
My little hero, My little boy
My little hero, Close your eyes...

Shadows fall and voices call, but you're not easy to scare
Sleep, you'll find a world designed to do anything you dare.
Close your eyes and maybe then you'll crush the enemy
and find a friend
And have adventures that will never end - pretend and
close your eyes
My little hero, Close your eyes
My little hero, My little boy...

And a Tori Amos song that will prolly make me cry someday as it is about her daughter growing up.....

She's a girl
Rising from a shell
Running to spring
It is her time it is her time
Watch her run with ribbons undone

She's a rose in a lily's cloak
She can hide her charms
It is her right there will be time
To chase the sun with ribbons undone

She runs like a fire does
Just picking up daises
Comes in for a landing
A pure flash of lightening
Past alice blue blossoms
You follow her laughter
And then she'll surprise you
Arms filled with lavender

Yes my little pony is growing up fast
She corrects me and says
"You mean a thoroughbred"
A look in her eyes says the battle's beginning
From school she comes home and cries
I don't want to grow up Mom at least not tonight

You're a girl
Rising from a shell
Running through spring
With summer's hand in reach now
It is your time
It is your time
So just run with ribbons undone
It is your time yes my angel
It is your time
So just run with ribbons undone

Run run darlin'
Ribbons undone

100 Tears Away is by Vonda Shepherd

Another one that's been making me cry lately - from the illustrious musical group from "Bear in the Big Blue House" --

Let me hold you in my arms
Let me keep you safe and warm
Let me bring you to a place
Where there is no harm

I could go on and on - I'm always finding deeper significance in songs than was probably even intended :lol

Here's one of my favorites by Sinead O'Connor:

All Babies

All babies are born saying God's name
Over and over,
All born singing God's name
All babies are flown from the Universe
From there they're lifted by the hands of angels
God gives them the stars to use as ladders
She hears their calls
She is mother and father
All babies are born out of great pain
Over and over
All born into great pain
All babies are crying
For no-one remembers God's name

There's only love
There's only love
There's only love in this world
There's only love
There's only love
There's only love in this world

Waiting for Jaden

The telephone was ringing, grandparents were frantically running about,
and everyone kept asking "When's that baby coming out?"
Well Earth Day 2000 was her due date
but by May the fourth, Jaden was late
so we were waiting, waiting for Jaden
ooooooooooooooooh

We wanted to do it naturally, so we searched out all the possible remedies;
hot sex, nipple stimulation, castor oil, and gory movies
but by that Friday, they were threatening to induce
and we pleaded with you to come out and call it a truce
Yes, we were waiting, waiting for Jaden
ooooooooooooooooh

Jaden, can't you hear what we say?
Your mother and I want you to come out and play
ooooooooooooooooh

It was Cinco de Mayo, and while patriots were cruising the boulevard
your mother was pushing, and she was pushing hard
the stroke of midnight; and she pushed once more
at at twelve-o-two on May the sixth, Jaden was born

now we're elated
we're related to Jaden!
ooooooooooooooooh

My hubby keeps playing this song and thinking he is very clever. He also admits he would most likely not have ever hardly liked it until now ;) And yet now it seems so sweet!

GREAT thread. which lucinda williams song is that? i can only think of car wheels on a gravel road when i think of her! lame, i know...

I made a CD called BRINGING DOWN BABY for a friend's blessingway. everyone who came had to give me a song they thought would be great to listen to in birth. as i compiled the songs, i realized the songs, according to tone and lyrics could actually be sorted into the stages of labor. so here's the compilation:

FULL TERM
Day Without Rain -- Enya
We Walk the Same Line -- Everything But the Girl
These Are the Days -- Natalie Merchant

EARLY FIRST STAGE
Ice Cream -- Sarah McLachlan
Only Time -- Enya
I'm Ready -- Tracy Chapman

ACTIVE LABOR
Missing -- Everything But the Girl
Tell it Like it Is -- Tracy Chapman
Water is Wide -- Cowboy Junkies

TRANSITION
Fire and Rain -- James Taylor
Hold On -- Sarah McLachlan
Climb on a Back That's Strong -- Shawn Colvin

SECOND STAGE/Pushing
Every Breath You Take -- The Police
Steam Roller Blues -- James Taylor (my first-born arrived during this song after nearly 2 hrs pushing -- perfect!!!)

POST-PARTUM
She Makes Me Feel Good -- Lyle Lovett
Rockabye Sweet Baby James -- James Taylor
Wild Child -- Enya

need to find my copy and put it with my birth kit! thx for this reminder!!!
