a woman named rebecca adams also had a college course (north carolina maybe?) where she actually took her class out on tour. this was around 1990.
i just read all this thread and things people wrote made me remember several things - like that my son was conceived at the 91 halloween show at the oakland coliseum. funny to have forgotton that. and that i had my little purple school bus named the cosmic eggplant. i looked through hoping to see if i found anyone i used to know....my name has changed since those days...a lot of the people i knew settled around here, in northern california. but i always wonder about all the others...

Yes, I remember that, too! My first show was Buckeye Lake '88. I moved to San Fran in Dec that same year, and life ain't never been the same. I was The Stamp Lady ~ I stamped folks with my stamp du jour (Usually the rainbow inked Dancing Bears or Dancing Skeletons).

Funny ~ I conceived my 1st ds real close to the same time! :lol He was born 6-9-92. That was probably my 1st run of shows straight. Good times, good times!

so much :love hearing you ladies talk about days of yore.

"I think Jerry was depressed for years and made lifestyle choices accordingly - he just wasn't into being Jerry Garcia anymore. Which sucks, and I wish it had been different for him - like that he had been able to choose what he wanted to do and do it. That wasn't reality though. The GD was a big machine and it wouldn't let him go."

all i can think of when i read this is trey. :gloomy:

ombra, phil started st stephen while i was in the porta potty. i had to run my ass all the way back to my boys to dance, but it was magnificent. (actually, same thing happened in the bathroom at CSN, they started southern cross and i had to race back out to dance with my mom.)

funny to find this thread on here at this moment. i lived on grateful dead tour from 85 to 90, which is when i ended up in a federal prison for lsd sales. i began a newsletter called rainbow communications for incarcerated deadheads.

That is so awesome - I got your newsletter and wrote to several deadheads in jail for years!!!! Small world!

wow it's so great to meet you! good to know the newsletter worked. i used to smuggle them out of prison with my friend who visited me, in her baby's bunting.
this was the darker side of the shows....thank you for bringing someone some light! who did you write to?

Talia Rose, I would surely buy your book if you ever published it, as I am sure so many others would. I say go for it mama! :heartbeat

How many of you out there have been told you too should write a book when you share some of your tour stories? Wouldn't it be cool to get a collaborative effort of a bunch of short stories about life on GD tour written by the sisters.....I just got the chills!:dust

There are definitely similarities in their stories, caspian's mama, but I truly don't feel that Trey is going down Jerry's road. I never saw Phish, so I wasn't watching as they all got more and more entangled in the web of um, difficulties that eventually caused the band to dissolve.

But, I have seen Trey play with Phil & Friends three times now (always as an "unannounced guest"). First was in February of 06 - my dd and I were sitting in our second-row :) seats at the Beacon waiting for the show to start, after having braved a monster blizzard to drive to NYC (which was submerged in mountains of snow) - and Trey walked onto the stage wearing a winter jacket, and carrying his guitar in a soft case. He looked familiar - I had seen photos of him online a few times - and after a few minutes I realized why he looked familiar, and I told my daughter, "I think that's Trey". Some other people in the audience (only a few noticed him, the place was still almost empty) were really excited to see him, and he was very cordial and friendly to them. I think he even leaned over from the stage and signed autographs for a few of them. I was a bit disappointed to see him, thinking he might detract from the show, but it wasn't as bad as I feared. As a matter of fact, when he and Joan sang "Buckets of Rain" together, it was one of the highlights of the show for me.

Later (July 06) he joined P&F in Bethel, I didn't care whether he was there or not (kind of expected him to be, since he and Mike Gordon had opened for Phil that night). He did not offend, so that was cool. I loved that show! Then in Glens Falls a few weeks ago - which was my first show of the recently-completed fabulous and already legendary Phil tour - Trey came out with the rest of the band at the beginning of the show (and played the entire show) and I was actually pleased to see him.

So it's been less than a year since he got arrested, and he's still (I believe) complying with the judge's terms of being in drug court, i.e. going to counseling or something like that, and taking drug tests. He seemed to be thrilled just to be playing a show, he was really getting into it (and yet not taking over nor trying to upstage anyone, IMO).

The theme of the Glens Falls show was "Getting in Trouble with the Law" and more specifically, "Going to Jail and Then Hopefully Getting Yourself Out Before They Let You Out". Almost every song they played was in keeping with the theme, and I'm fairly sure that all the songs were tied-in to that theme in some way, except that some of the the connections were a little too obscure for me to get. :) Trey was in really good spirits. He sang the line "Test me test me, why don't you arrest me" with a big smile on his face and a big smile in his voice. Instrumentally, he was all over the smoking hot Viola Lee Blues (which was a delectable many-layered sandwich that they went in and out of and back into and out of, interspersed with Dark Star, Unbroken Chain, and so on, all throughout the second set). He sang the lead vocals on Wharf Rat, with sweet sincerity (although a bit weak in the mix, from the spot where I was dancing insanely all night). He was smiling hugely during the whole show, looked to be quite fit and energetic, and I really get the feeling he's on an upswing. OK, he was arrested for drugs last year, but maybe he needed that eye-opener to help him break the cycle/habit of the whole substance abuse trap.

By comparison, Jerry was pretty lively too, in the months following his arrest for possession (he was around the same age at the time that Trey is now, incidentally). But, he was also a heavy cigarette smoker, around 100 lbs overweight, completely uncontrolled diabetic, health going downhill in every way, and refusing to heed advice from his doctor or anyone. Plus, he was the key to so many people's livelihood that he was, or felt that he was, unable to pull the plug on the GD - whereas Trey is already out of Phish (or on extended hiatus or whatever the case may be). I feel strongly that, despite the similarities, the story will play out much differently for Trey. I hope so, because (as I said) I'm starting to like him.

ombra, phil started st stephen while i was in the porta potty. i had to run my ass all the way back to my boys to dance, but it was magnificent. (actually, same thing happened in the bathroom at CSN, they started southern cross and i had to race back out to dance with my mom.)

That's typical for me too since I don't usually want to wait on long bathroom lines during setbreaks, so I'll rush out to "go" when I think there won't be a line! That's so nice that you and your mom go to shows together. I've never taken my mom to a show - although for a while there in the 80s I really wanted to. However, I don't think she'd enjoy it one bit, and would probably unintentionally interfere with my enjoyment as well. I'm really happy that my daughter loves to go to Phil shows with me, though - in fact, just today she was asking me when the next one would be (unfortunately, it's one night only, sold out, and on the opposite coast from us - not practical at all for us to go). Then she told me she'd really like it for us to just take some time off from our regular lives and be on perpetual Phil tour for as long as that's happening. :heartbeat I have a really cool daughter.

She was voicing my sentiments exactly, by the way - although I have no idea how to put it into effect, since I have two other (equally cool) kids who have no desire to go to Phil shows at this time, not to mention lots of other responsibilities, not to mention an imbalance between financial priorities/necessities (many) and actual finances available (not as many). But hey, you never know!

I'd also love to go to Hawaii this winter to check out the 5 or 6 shows that David Nelson & Friends will be doing there. John Molo is in Dave's band for that trip, so is Pete Sears, both of which (especially Molo!) really tipped the scales for me, making it much more appealing of a concept. Seems like it might be a bit of a hassle jumping around from island to island, changing hotels all the time, and then I have no idea where we'd be getting the $$ for the trip at all even - but maybe it will all fall into place. I saw David with the same lineup a couple of months ago, and wow, it really worked for me. Especially considering that their material is way less familiar to me - it doesn't have the "advantage" of being (however to say this) an integral part of my biology the way that the GD songs are, at this point in my life. I would totally recommend checking out David & Friends for anyone who gets the chance. I can B&P a copy of the show I saw, if anyone is interested, by the way. :heartbeat :D

* i certainly hope so. he's one talented SOB, i do know that. i hope he pulls through and puts this behind him, esp for the sake of his kids. (not just us "thousand barefoot children outside dancing" on his lawn, lol.)

my mom definitely isn't a head, but she loves good, live music. the summer ds turned 2 she took us to see allman bros w/ moe, steve miller w/ ratdog, and csn. (without casi we also went to see kc and the sunshine band. word!) she was the first and strongest musical influence in my life, from disco to 80s lite rock to all types of classic rock (doors, zepp, etc). i love that i get to share this with her sometimes. :thumb

I too just found this.... :love

I never got to see the Dead, but I try not to think about that because it makes me sad. My parents weren't 'heads (very mainstream), so I found the Dead too late. :( I've seen The Other Ones a couple of times, and Rat Dog. It's been a couple of years though. It's so wonderful to "see" other Deadheads out there. There aren't many where I live.

Ok - can I just say it's *almost* worth getting Sirius Radio for that!?! WOW!

I have to agree.... that is pretty awesome.

Anyone read Phil's book?

ombre, I'm reading your posts and nodding ... yeah, Jerry was not the happiest camper. But my deepest joys were his sounds. The rest of it was wonderful, but when my head flew highest were his highs.

So there ya' go. And am too old to go back. (I know, you're my age and making it, right? :lol)

DH saw them at Woodstock (yeah, *that* Woodstock) and then didn't see them again until we met in 1994 and I took him to shows. Not the best shows, either. But he fit my "I'll know when I meet him" criteria: He had to have actually been to a Dead show before I ever did. But anyway, he's not interested in the follow-ups at all, so that wasn't an option with him. And now we don't live there anymore anyway ...

Sigh.

But have archive.org on an intravenous setting as a general rule and am getting my fill. Or getting my Phil, as the case may be. :lol

i hope so, with Everything Jerry Did in his musical career, there's really something for everyone. That goes for all of the varied band members...

my kids rock to the Garcia Grisman Stuff "Teddy Bears picnic", "Ain't no Bugs" on me etc... old americana recordings and all the bluegrass stuff. And i love it all.

i'm only 31 so i'm on the outside of the TRUE DEAD HEADS.

As soon as I get these kids out the door, I'll check it out! :thumb:

On a semi-unrelated topic...I am hittin' the road like the good ol' days this Friday. Heading down to Chattanooga (5 hours away) to see Tea Leaf Green. ALONE!! No kids. No husband. Can you say woot? TLG is a fantastic band, I am really excited. Usually I have a link in my siggy to one of their songs, but today happens to be the Dead. :lol This version (I think) was from Cal-Expo '89. Dh and I were there, and had to miss the next night b/c our friends were getting married on the top of Half Dome 2 days later and we needed to get up to the base camp. Man...good flippin' times y'all!

Hey Mamas,
I'm sorry to jump on the thread so late, not really a member of the tribe. I love the Dead so much, but hardly listen anymore 'cause it makes me so sad. But I do go see our local Dead cover bands! Somehow being at a live show like that, it isn't at all sad, it's invigorating and happy.
Anyway, I came here because I was going through my book "Cooking with the Dead," by Elizabeth Zipern, which is a compilation of parking lot recipes with profiles and photos of the people making and selling the food. It's a fun book, and as a matter of fact I JUST NOW realized the second meaning to the title. Sometimes I am dense. Anyway, I just love reading about the people in the book and there's one that really catches my attention, her name was Harvest Earth Heart. She was making Vegan Organic No Electricity Spiral of Life Wheatgrass Pizzas, and waxed poetic about the Dead and the Lord and her plans for the future to have a healing place or campground or something. And I keep wondering if she did, where it is. I tried googling her name but no luck. So I figured, if she happens to have had kids, you KNOW this sister would be a Mothering.commune mama! So it seemed natural to ask in the Deadhead tribe.
So any of you know or know of or are you in fact Harvest Earth Heart??

P.S. There sure is a lot of crossover between the Hairy Mamas Tribe and the Deadhead Mamas tribe, isn't there?? That reminds me, I have to post in the hairy tribe. Saw a hairy mama at the stuffy ballet!

I have been asleep for so long... This just made me shiver...
So I figured, if she happens to have had kids, you KNOW this sister would be a Mothering.commune mama! Jen
I do not know where Harvest is... but you refering to her as "sister" just brought out a flood gate of emotion! I have been known as Moma for 13 years... I have been sleep walking through my life. I guess it was the saddness that clouded my vision. I was awoken a few months back when a friend asked me about babywearing... the first place I looked was mothering... then I wandered into the commune... before my eyes I saw my "tribe"... I guess I can run... but I cannot hide from it. I have felt so relieved to find others! To find those who might "carry me home" I know I might be being a dork... but the energy reading through the posts... I SO miss that "family" I wonder all the time... where are the burrito people. Where is mike and his breakfast burritos with his wonderful blue bonnet... Jessica and John and their baby booties... I miss traveling with product, a truck, and a dream... (could you imagine trying to make enough nowadays to fill the gas tank...ack)
The other day the kids and I were at the park... there out of the corner of my eye was a tie dye... not a typical one... but a holy relec... it was a 95' tour shirt... It honestly almost made me cry... but you know what when I walked up and said "we ARE everywhere" I think he almost started to cry harder.
Encounters like this are taking over my life... and all of them have been leading to my awakening... ok I canot stop quoting lyrics here... but "here comes sunshine" out of my clouded darkness...
Even my DH feels it... he has dusted off his guitar... and started teaching my DS a song or two... He put the new plate on my Thing... he had it special made Tea 4 2... I love that man... I always wonder how many times I walked past him in the parking lots never knowing he would be my husband someday...
I know this is a ramble... but I cannot talk about this to anyone becides him... no one "gets" it... they always think Dead=drug or super partier... They have no clue who the Warf Rats are... they have no clue how the family worked...
I would like to thank you SISTERS for helping me "wake up and REALIZE"...

I am sorry that you have been lost in the darkness for so long. It makes me quite sad. Many heads did get lost, and many moved on. The life that was the deadscene is gone for sure, but the legacy remains. I will forever cherish my time with the the Dead...my life truly transformed into wonderfulness because of that time in my life. The dead was my awakening as they were for so many others.

Welcome aboard, sister. Sending you some :goodvibes:!! :D

:peace:

I am a closet one. I haven't posted on this thread yet. I toured for a few years in the late 80's and then a bit some more in the early 90's. I stopped in, I dunno 91? Anyhow. The day Jerry died was like a really big deal in my life. A huge reality check. I don't know why I was so surprised. I hadn't been seeing shows regularly anymore, I was married by that time, had a child, the last show I saw was in salt lake city, I took my son and husband- neither had ever even seen a show (I saw two days, but the second night without DP), I feel guilty now because instead of going to our seats I had DP watch the child so I could dance. I would always dance in the halls. It was a really nice show.

So that's all for now, I just noticed this tribe. I try not to think about it much. I had all my tapes stolen out of my apartment years ago (and I had the coolest covers too, anyone remember those? The paper with the cute designs and set lists?) and have never replaced a single show. One girl told me once she would send me some burned CDs and I was about to send the blanks to her but she wouldn't take money for the shipping back to me, (and wouldn't pay for it either) so I was confuzzled. I work with another deadhead who has lots of tapes and CDs directly from the boards and he was eager (he said) to record some for me to help me start building up a collection again. I gave him two packages of blank CDs over a year ago and he still hasn't recorded me one. SO I don't like to talk about it any more. I feel like someone is trying to take it away from me. Weird as I don't believe in that stuff really, but it's to a point I'm like, well, OK then. :lol

It's fun to read all your stories though. Brings back strong memories. If I feel brave (and my computer stops being weird), maybe I can share a couple fun and funny stories.

Hey orange bird! Sorry about losing your stash. :lol Have you ever played around on archive.org? Here's a search of grateful dead 1991 (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=grateful%20dead%201991). All this crazy technology!! :dizzy:

I still have a lot of those cute tape covers. :D My brother used to make them...his weren't really that good though. :lol

Back when I was reallllly into music, I was a punk/alternative fan (still am, but don't live the life), so I missed the GD boat. However, in the last several years, I've had the awesome opportunity to appreciate the Dead. I wish I would have listened to them a long time ago - especially when I was waiting in parking lots after/during their shows for "other" reasons.
As a footnote, I "discovered" the Dead through my favorite musician, Ryan Adams, who did some work with Phil Lesh.

Would you guys mind looking at these links and seeing if this woman is someone you possibly used to know? She was found dead in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and was wearing a Grateful Dead jacket.

:(

Wow. Awful.

I am wondering if the "Delta Fire Crew" sweatshirt is more of a clue than the Dead sweater. YK?

I was the same way when i was younger i was a big alternative fan and have recently (say about two or three years)started liking the Dead. I have posters and some GD memorabilia from my sister who no longer listens to them. I actually am listening to them as I am typing on pandora radio. heheh:treehugger::treehugger:

Yeah, but no stones unturned and all of that. Thanks to everyone who took the time to go to the link. There are actually a few more cases where people are believed to have been going to or just left a Grateful Dead concert:

I consider myself a deadhead even though in this lifetime I never got to see the boys all together... I've seen them all play live, but never with Jerry.

:joy: i'm glad to find you all!

Happy Birthday Jerry!
I just found this thread, been venturing out of my usual forum (Montessori).
I was a Deadhead in the late 80s and early 90s. I loved going to those summer shows!!!!!!
Orangebird - I think I still have a few of those tapes with the homemade covers....I'll have to dig them out!

Happy Birthday Jerry! :joy: I miss you so much. Getting a little teary as I always do today and on August 9.

For some reason I always find myself pulling out the Ratdog show Bobby still did on the day Jerry died. How hard it must have been for him. I'll hafta find that & dust it off for next week.....

I am so glad I found this thread. I never officially 'travelled' with the Dead but I did get to go to around 10 shows before Jerry passed.

My husband and I both share our love of the Dead. He's 58 years young and Im 38 this year. He was rocking out with them in the 70s and me in the 90s. You gotta love it, timeless goodness!! Anyone else share this transgenerational love??
Grateful to find this tribe, havent been posting since last year and decided finally to prioritize.
Although its probably been done again and again, favorites???!!! Shows, songs, moments on the lot??
Feel free to link. Im still green at posting, hopefully I didnt reply to a 2003 posting, but would love to get to know ya. Need to hang out more. Popping in on the MJs to say HI as well.

My 40 ear old husband is the Deadhead in our family. Oh and our 6 year old son Dakota Garcia, says he's a Deadhead too. I never really listen to the Dead until after we were married. I like some of their stuff but not all of it. I love Deady Bears though so most people think I'm a Deadhead. Anyway, I'll be 58 next month.
