:hippie Hi! We are still deadicated but it is harder now..I know I am the mother I am now because of the people I met through the Dead...I really miss it though..especially Shakedown Street..can't seem to find cool clothes anywhere anymore. I just went on their website..cool place, but it made me sad a little for that time in my life..keep in touch, we deadheads should still stay 2 gether.....:love :hippie :D

Not very deadicated... and I MISS it. The culture, I mean. We live in a fairly conservative area now (all we can afford) and rural as well, and I hate traveling with kids, so...

What area are you all in? I'm in Oregon, lived in Eugene for many years.

I miss the music, but I am glad those wild days are behind me (ya know?) I was only a teenager then and I did really dangerous things like hitchiking and drugs. I love being a mom, the kids dance to bootlegs all the time and have been to a few shows, but my quiet life with my settled down husband and my mortgage is perfect!!!!! This reminds me, my 3.5 yo insists Eyes of the World goes "wake up to find out that you ate the eyes of a squirrel!" HAHA

Oh wow! I was in northern CA for Christmas and up to the 28th of Dec. I kept hearing radio ads for The Other Ones playing at the Oakland Colliseum for New Years. Going was totally out of the question but oh, how I yearned to!!!! It didn't help that I drove past the Colliseum about ten times!

Ya' know, I have not been to a single post-Jerry version of the band. Not one.

The first Further festival near me after Jerry took off was at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, and was going to talk DH into it that morning ... and got the phone call that DH's father passed away. Spent the day making funeral plans instead. :(

Anyway, I miss it terribly.

We have a semi-annual regular houseguest who comes through here on his way to Rainbow every year from overseas, and he's still totally in his Dead-ness, and his every visit is such a joy to me because of the sudden immersion in it ...

Also have to say that I can't watch videos of them at all, though I know the band has put out several "videos from the vault." They make me cry. Seriously.

Gr8tfulmom, love that "Eyes" rewrite :LOL :LOL :LOL

& blueviolet, Eugene forever will make me think of space aliens. (think "Close Encounters" theme / 1978)

Had to write again, because I can relate to not being able to listen to the music as much anymore..it makes me sad. But last night dh asked if I figured out how to work the cd burner yet..which I haven't:angry .I did download some really awesome tunes that had me sitting here in front of the computer until the wee hours..and it was the first time in a while I really could listen without feeling too blue. We have been to Further and Phish and some other shows...funny story, about 2 months ago, the college by our house had a non publicized show..Vince Welnick and his band, and Tom Constantine sat in..we had a great time..we were the oldest ones there and we are only 36/38..noone else even realized who they were..anyhow, it was a pretty good show:hippie ..oh, one of you asked where some of us were from..i am from south jersey, near "Sin City"..

Nice to see other gr8ful parents are out there :D

We just saw the Other Ones at the Kaiser in December. We took the kids and had lots of fun. It did feel very strange though. It was like seeing a great dead cover band playing the set list of your dreams!!! But it wasn't even close to the real things. We have been to lots of Phish shows (we don't usually work very hard to get to them though) but I find it a whole different energy. Much more of a monoculture than the wonderful variety of people dead shows attracted. Also I find the drug scene very intense and chemical! Not very family oriented at all.

Most of all I wish I could have taken my kids to see Jerry. Maybe it wouldn't have been as good in reality as it is in my fantasy ( long drives, crazy weather extremes and lack of access to showers etc. may have been hard with kids) but still...

My 3yo loves Uncle Jerry, and of course, loves to hear his namesake song and knows all the words! (We named him after Cassidy because it was the song playing in the room when he crowned on the album Reckoning). Catfish John and Johnny B Goode are his other favourites!

All the years gone by, they melt into a dream....

Jen

P.S. Have no doubt: we are everywhere!

I have to agree with Gr8tfulmom - I miss the music and many of the people, but I sure was lucky what with all the crazy stuff I did! That part I can live without. Life is great now with dh (who I took to his only 2 shows before Jerry moved on) and dd - what bliss to look down into her face as she sleeps at my breast! The music comes from friends getting together and grooving nowadays. :p

Hey count me in!
I can relate...happy to be alive today what with the things I did plus Rainbow crazy travel stories...enjoying being at home with husband and baby. But play Muddy River near me and you can forget it...hahahaha.
Perhaps one of us or all of us sisters rubbed shoulders during hallway spinning or shared a giggle outside trying to jump a fence! ahhhh...memories!!!!
Gr8flmom....true to a dead head form...the changing of lyrics to make a joke...hahahaha. That made me laugh!!!! hahahahaha. Sounds like your child's got that jokey spirit. hahahaha.

Their music still uplifts me. In my early, new mommy days, Uncle John's Band was my favorite song to dance my weary bones to as baby fell asleep in the sling. Dh and I love watching them on DVD together, our little get aways without leaving home.

Karen, I know what you mean about missing Shakedown Street. Finding dresses, especially when pregnant, was difficult. I actually taught myself to sew. I visit links off of their website for inspiration for clothes, for kids and me.

Dh and I saw TOO right down the street from our home in Indianapolis. The music was so alive. We continued on to the Kaiser Auditorium for the 12/5 show and met up with some old friends in the bay area. Not the same, but still great!:hippie

I miss the community desperately. We ended up living in an area with no deadheads and it can be terribly lonely. I try to get back to NYC at least once a year for Phil shows, etc, and took my 8 year old daughter to a Rainbow Gathering this summer, hope to do that again once the new baby is big enough. I also taught myself to sew and make hippie clothes for myself and dd. I guess the hardest part is not having people who understand around, just me and dh (and he was a different sort of head than I was,Jersey boy who use to drink & do blow, not a granola type). It would be nice to have other family-friendly heads around here.:hippie Love and light to all of you!!!

lunamoon & lovnmama, I would LOVE to hear more about this teaching yourselves how to sew.

I have this fantasy about doing that, just so I could get clothes that fit (still look pg  ) ... and that fit my "worldview" iykwim ...

The closest thing to finding hippie clothes for sale here is a local Tibetan giftshop where the clothes are ... umm ... overpriced. I find cheap stuff on eBay but hate buying things I can't try on, because, well, I'm shaped ... uniquely (read: I look pg).

Anyway, some of you "do" Rainbow. Do you go to local gatherings, or just the national?

Well, not strictly a head. I am more of a Beatles (as far as classic rock), but I do love the Dead too. My dh is def deadicted. Oddly, he had all their albums, but only ever went to one show. Then, when Jerry died, he became possessed. He picked up his guitar again too (coincidentally with the kids getting big enough to stay with sitters, so we could go to shows, and actually let him play at home).

We started going to shows. Furthur, TOO, Ratdog, Phil and Friends, fests such as the Gathering of the Vibes in Conn or NY, Gathering on the Mountain in the Poconos, PA. Went to one Phish show. They reminded me of Zappa. I really like moe. Sometimes I love them. Leftover Salmon. Deep Banana Blackout. Then the oldies but goodies like Santana and Dylan.

We named our dog Cassidy.

Have you read Micky Hart's book, When the Women Were Drummers? Great, goddessy.

Now we have probably 100 bootlegs, and all the Dick' Picks and some videos, but I wish I coulda seen Jerry at least once.

It's funny, tonight I put on some Jerry Band to work with and found I couldn't concentrate on work with it on, so had to stop.

Can't find time to listen to them anymore at all. It just doesn't happen. :(

At least my kids love the Garcia/Grisman "Not for kids only" CD, we listen to it to death, so I can get some fix of it ...

Total deadheads here. Infact both the DH and I still both have very long hair, and the DH has a beard. I followed the dead while in college. My kids have been to lots of "hippie fest" in the area and have seen Phish, Santana, Ekoostic Hookah, Etc many times. We still have friends with dreads. Winter gets a bit lonely, but I am already planning for summer fest...I love the people and the community...just feels like home!

Amy--

Don't you just play your own music while driving around and never mind what the kids like? Sure, we listened to Raffi a lot, but still it was Beatles, Dead, Nirvana, Pearl Jam most of the time. They just had to deal, and actually they liked it!

(it may be a bit disturbing for some, to hear a 3 year old singing along to Kurt C's "Rape Me," but still, it didn't seem to do any permanant damage! :eek :) )

We still take turns, sometimes it's my Dave Matthews or David Bowie, sometimes it's White Stripes, Good Charlotte, or lesbian Russian techno! It's all good!

I just remembered a story you all might like. When I was in cooking school in San Francisco a classmate of mine was buddies with Bobby. As in Bob Weir. Used to go to his house for dinner and stuff. So when the Vegas shows rolled around that year my class mate asked me if I was going... 'Well, yeah, but I got shut out for Saturday night.' He says, 'I'm skipping class on Friday to go out early, I'll see what I can do for you. Check at the Will Call on Saturday.' Okay. Sure.

So Saturday afternoon I getout to the arena, find teh Will Call tent...
'Hi, I'm Kama... X might have left a ticket for me?'
"Sure, do you have ID?"
'uuhhhhh... shit... I left it... No. Not on me'
"It's cool, calm down. So, how do you know X?"
So I told her... she laughed "Okay, you know his name, your name and that's how he said he knew you... it must be your ticket! Enjoy the show. "

So I go in and find my friend.... who is wearing a laminated pass (!) and he slaps a backstage pass on my skirt and pours me a glass of wine. (Okay, paper cup, but you can bring anything you want in when you come in through the back!) At some point he asks if I had any trouble getting my tix so I tell him the story. He says, "Oh yeah, Cassidy is a real sweet girl." And I said something about 'there must be a lot of girls named Cassidy around here' and he says, "Yeah, I guess. But she's the one."

HELLO!
I am here!
I just saw this thead :) There are quite a few of us here on MDC if I remember the "are you kind" thead right......or at least there were a few months ago!
We live right in the Poconos, so Montage is close to home for us. I did not get to go to the fest, as I seem to get pg as soon as I think about buying tickets . Anyone going up that way can sure crash at our *NEW* house as soon as we move! Also we are close to Hexfest.....but when we move we will not be right up the hill anymore from them. Where are all you guys from? I see Karen Marigold (BTW, what a great story about the college band!) is near my mom, if I am getting the right "sin city!"....could there be more than one in NJ ?
Just bought myself a cool Red Rooster T for the upcoming warm weather (Man I am sick of the cold!). There is a really cool little "hippie" shop at the local farmers market.
Gr8flmom...that Eyes take had me Lol! How funny kids are! My DD thinks the song Corinna is for her (doesnt help I sing her name in it's place  ).
Anyhow, hope you are are well and keeping out of this amazing cold. Anyone in my neck of the woods (heck, anyone really!) can email me at Greatgravygoddes@aol.com for the next few weeks until we cancel AOL and move northward. Just put MDC in the subject line so I dont delete you! :)
Have a grateful day all!

Always wondered what it must be like to be the inspiration for a really awesome song. Like, I imagine what Patti Harrison must have felt the first time she heard "Layla," KWIM?

AHHHHH!!! We are here and we are everywhere!! The world just seems that much empty since Jerry up and died on us though. We still have the bootlegs and there are so many web sites to record off of these days that it does get me and dh by. We have not been to see 'The Other Ones" but some freinds who have tell us that shakedown is back and it is mainly the true DEADICATED old schoolers that attend so the scene is what it should be. Can't you just feel that jones just rushing in!?!! We have however gone to see this band called "Dark Star Orchestra" and they play actual shows, entire shows! They all sound just like who they are representing andf you close your eyes even for a little bit of time the magic gives you that rush. No comparison to the real thing mind you, but if you just need to hear a live version of the Dead that really sounds like the DEAD I highly recommend checking them out. Glad that you are all here.

I've been meaning to ask, in an open seating venue, where would I find YOU?

I was usually Phil side, about 2/3 of the way back but kind of low. 1st year in Vegas we were at the very top, all the way at the 'back', behind the endzone opposite the stage. It was contact high central, let me tell ya! All the dope in the stadium left that way, I think! The one year I sat Jerry side (with the friend I mentioned above) was a revelation... those seats fell into the shade at like 2:00! Holy cow! Phil side just baked all afternoon long in the brutal desert sun. But it was fun to make numerous trips to the showers. And Jerry side missed God's light show sweeping across the desert towards us that one year... timed perfectly with Fire on the Mountain... I would not lie about such a thing.

Straight back. Dead center, straight back, middle-of-the-way up.

Even if it wasn't open seating, that's where we'd be. Only exception was if we had floor (really close up or right by the tapers) seats. Otherwise ... straight back. Dead center, straight back, middle-of-the-way up.

:D

PS - Have heard about the Dark Star Orchestra, that they memorize every note from particular shows and play them start to finish.

And where are these downloadable shows? We're kind of technologically behind the times, so have never done such a thing ... and is it done by traders/free or is it done by evil moneymakers/not free?

I had a link Amy and it's free... I'll try to find it. A buddy of mine emailed it to me with the idea that it would be fun to make and trade CDs ... build your own 'supershow' that never was and burn it for a few friends, that sort of thing. Trouble is I have never made peace with the CD burner and just now the computer it is in has the flu or something, so....

Hello lovely ladies! I just recently joined & absolutely love this discussion board.. Another deadicatedmamma here. :*)

First off I should apologize for not checking to see if there was already a gratefulmama on board. Sorry Gr8tefulmama.. I'm not sure that I can change my name w/ the same isp or not but will try.

I too have a dd who was named after Uncle Neal. She is so proud of her name & the meaning behind it. (Cassidy Cheyenne, 9yr old)Her little sister 4 1/2 yrs isn't happy she doesn't have a song about her.

Anyway, have any of you caught any Phil Lesh & Friends? They really have filled the void of missing the Dead for all of these years. I took dd #3 to her first show in 2001 (Alpine Valley, P&F, Dylan & WSP. She was 5 months at the time. What a beautiful experience.

Cheyna & I also went to the TOO Family Reunion last Aug. which was a truely magical experience. Papa had to work & cared for the other dd's. It was the closest feeling to a Dead show since Jerry passed.. Lots of oldschool heads out of the woodwork. It really was a family reunion. I love the energy that radiates to & from our kids in that environment..

Although I was stopped at the gate & refused to bring a stroller in. I was told to take it back to my car. I had just walked up & down hills nearly a mile from the car, loaded down w/stuff & wasn't about to go back.. They wouldn't even let me park the stroller behind first aid so I could leave our things in it. I was told it had to be outside the venue. Soooo, I left it in the lot & crossed my fingers it'd be there when I got back. Thankfully it was.

It was their new policy. I have never been turned away because of a stroller.. I had mail ordered & recieved no info w/ tix or on tix master & Alpine websites so was thrown off for a bit but made due. It was tough inside the venue all day w/o it. Expecially when dd fell asleep & didn't have the covering from the sun.. Luckily I had my sling & some friends & we rigged up shelter w/ a sheet on top of backpacks.. I felt really sorry for the other parents who were turned away w/ newborns in in their carseat/strollers.. As an event billed as a family reunion it sure wasn't family friendly.

Cassidy was on tour w/ us until Jerry passed. Her first Dead (San Diego '93)show was at 2 mths & when we had dd# 2 we took her to her first show TOO in '98..

It's been a wonderful ride for our family.. DP & I have yet to take all 3 dd's to the same show..It was so easy back when we had just 1 & 2 dd's. But now w/ 3 it will take some serious planning & a very kind venue to take the endeavor.. The scene isn't kid family at many venues these days. Because of that I have turned to collecting recent shows & stay up to date w/ reviews..

I'd be happy to send you ladies some freebies.. DP & I have quite a bit of Dead, P&F, TOO & JGB.. I have some trades to finish up on & will post here w/ some shows to choose from.

Here's a great site to d/l from. Let me know if you need any help.

Another deadhead piping in here!!! Soleil and I listen to the dead almost everyday, along with Dylan and Phish. She knows many dead tunes, and her version of Ripple is

If my words did blow...
She started singing that at 18 mts, and just sort of kept it, even though she knows the real words now!

The only music that could get her to sleep as a babe was Garcia Accoustic...love that cd.
Dh is a musician, and I love when he pulls out the dead, he and his brother keep it alive for me!!!
I do miss the community, all of my friends of old are gone now...though one will be back this weekend, and is giving birth in April.
I'm planning on giving birth to Mickey's album, Music to be born by...

Peace,

"If my words did blow..."

mamasoleil, that is sooo sweet! Sometimes Jerry was the only thing that'd help the little one's fall asleep.. And for papa, rocking the little one's to JGB was the "only" way they'd fall asleep w/ him as babes..

A beautiful memory w/ our 9yr old dd: Deer Creek '94 she was about 10mths.. We had second row tix.. W/ good earplugs of course! Cassidy bobbed around on her papa's shoulders for most of the first set.. Cassidy & Jerry made eye contact many times. The band kept watching her & laughing!! They busted "Waltzing Matilda" an old Russian lullabye. And Jerry sang w/ his eyes fixed upon her.. Just thinking about that sends a wave of glowing energy through my body.. Sooooo many memories of beautiful experiences..

It's funny because as different as our 3 dd's are, the one thing they all have in common.. They were always awake during the first set & by set 2 they were fast asleep.. Then mamma could Really boogie down!!!!

Just thinking of all those happy times makes me antsy to take the girls to a nice outdoor venue for some sweet music.. Thankfully summer is right around the corner!!!:D

kama, I forget, do you have a girl or a boy?

A girl, I think.

So think about this. A girl is born (hopefully) with her ovaries intact. Every egg she will ever have is already there inside. So she's got your grandchildren right there.

Unlike a boy, who develops what he's gotta develop later on.

So you were carrying your grandchildren for all those months.

Wild, ain't it.

Add another Cassidy (boy) to the roster. We had tickets to see Ratdog the day he decided to be born. Our birthcenter was right down the street from the venue. As we left the birthcenter that night at 8:30, with my newborn baby next to me, I had a split-second thought that we could still make the show  We hadn't decided on a name yet and a friend who had been to the show said that they played Cassidy, that's when it hit us that the name fit the child. He looked like a Cassidy. We've taken our children to see Further, Phish, the Other Ones... but I have to say I worry about thier little ears. We sit all the way in the back. Now I really sound like a fogey...

Oh Omegamomma that is so cool to hear! Does he by any chance recall what year it was? I almost think it was 92, the year Steve Miller Band rocked the opening slot, but I'm not sure. It truly was amazing.

This very fast moving storm coming towards us across the wide open desert and the clear blue sky... and everytime that one really heavy chord and "Fire!Fire on the Mountain" plays there is a huge multiple flash of lightening... some to the ground and some cloud to cloud. Everyone Phil side is going nuts and everyone Jerry side has no idea why. Then the storm hits the stadium and in a flash Jerry side is quickly drenched. The wind is blowing like crazy, Jerry's hair is flying everywhere and he is leaning into the mic and singing strong, looking for all the world like some old world prophet or something. Now the whole place is going wild! The storm blows over us fast, leaving us refreshed, cooled, exhilerated. Man, I should try to get a tape of that show!

Yep, '92 w/Steve Miller...:D It sounds like one of those once in a life time shows. My husband has always talked about that show as being one of his favorites. He said that people were scrambling on stage to cover the equipment, but the band played on! For the encore they played "Knocking on Heavens Door" and that's when the sun broke through the clouds. It gives me chills thinking about it. My husband has hundreds of shows on tape, if he has that one I'll try to get it to you.

Allow me to quote the late/great Dr. Seuss from 'Horton Hears a Who'....
"We are here, we are here!! We are here, we are here!!"

Hi! I'm Omegamama's DH, and I've just arrived on this MB. It's wonderful to finally see something positive on the web, including such a supportive community!!

My turn, my turn!!!! :p

The above show that kama mentioned was 5/31/92, however I apparently got the dates a little mixed on my side (It seems the memories of the whole weekend sort of melted in to one!), The 'Knockin' on Heavens Door' encore was on Sat. the 30th. I clearly remember the Fire lightshow however because I could usually be found on Phil's side as well. And on this particular show at this particular time I was sitting waaaaaayy at the top, so I had an excellent view of the rolling clouds and lighting in the distance.

man I miss that sometimes...:( Not that I would change my current lifestyle by anymeans!!!! I currently have a co-worker who's taking in as much on that scene as possible right now, so I'm kinda living through him("Did they play DarkStar?!?! What was the encore?!?! How Close did you get?!?!?!").

But we do have the tapes right? Speaking of which, I'm d/ling the Vegas show as we speak...(94.38%....I'm hugging my cable modem :p) so if anyone wants a CD burned, just PM me or the omegamama.

Smile, smile, smile!!!!!!

Welcome Dunn Dad! Grab a drum and join the circle. It's funny cuz I thought the show I was talking about was a Saturday show too... but odds are pretty good that if it was the encore would have been.. well, you know.

That whole weekend was so magical in a lot of ways. I had mail ordered tickets for my college crowd and this was gonna be the last big road trip. One of the girls had just gotten married and another was about to and that one was leaving CA to move to VT. So she and her fiance decided to make this a good time, rented a convertable for the drive out to Sin City and invited me to ride along.

Also, somewhere in there one of the punk ass kids who asked me to get him a tix punked out on me... so now I have an extra. Which I hate. Cuz I ain't spending all my shopping time trying to sell a ticket and something about the chronic miracle seekers always rubbed me wrong. So I'm at my lil sis's the Weds before muttering about how I'm stuck with a ticket that this bonehead didn't even have the grace to pay me for... and my bro stops by. "Gee Kama, if there's room in a car and someplace I can sleep I'd love to buy it from ya." My whole attitude did a 180. "Ya ever seen the Dead, John?" "Nope." "First ones on me then!"

So I miracled my brother, we smoked joints and ate popsicles with the top down at 95 mph (it's all in the rolling!) and then the concerts lived up to the weekend.

The Dead are alive!

http://dead.net/_thedead/pages/dva2.html

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seven years ago, when Jerry passed, we made a conscious decision to
retire the name Grateful Dead. We did so after some deep soul searching
and out of our love and respect for what we had created together. After
we played our first shows together at Alpine Valley last year, we were
all profoundly affected by a sense of awe and connection that none of us
had felt since we played with Jerry.

It was a magical occurrence that no one could haveanticipated, yet one
we all want to embrace. To us, this was the Grateful Dead- without
Jerry. We had stopped being the "Other Ones" and were on our way to
becoming something new but at the same time very familiar.

Grateful Dead conjures up many different emotions and feelings for all
of us; it was a BAND, it continues to be a community, an approach to
life, a electrical current, a dream, the list goes on. Whenever and
wherever we played this past year, we all knew that we were experiencing
Grateful Dead in its multiplicity of forms. We also know that this would
not have been possible without all
of you joining to support us. Therefore, with the greatest possible
respect to our collective history, we have decided to keep the name
"Grateful Dead" retired in honor of Jerry's memory, and call ourselves:
"The Dead."

Please join The Dead and very special guests for a Valentine’s Day
celebration. All proceeds will benefit the Unbroken Chain Foundation,
the Rex Foundation and the Furthur Foundation.

The show will take place on February 14, 2003, at the Warfield Theater.
Tickets will be available at noon on Monday, February 10 through
Ticketmaster outlets and at Ticketmaster.com and online through The Dead
Tickets

Can't make the trip to San Fran on such short notice, but will take the whole family to at least one show this summer. It's a beautiful time to be a Deadhead. ~All good things in all good time.

Yup, I can vouch for Kama at that Vegas show...I was sitting near her. (Was that the year of the bag o' oranges?) Truly an awesome experience. Of course - I went to my first show with Kama too. (Irvine...and there wasn't a riot...just a bunch of stoned people running down a hill!)

I dragged my ex hubby to a Dominguez Hills show...never again...I had to promise him that I would only go to one show a year - but it was sure as hell going to be the Vegas ones. Managed to hit all 5 years.

Man I miss it...

Hey Rigga! Didn't see you here. It's funny, because for years I knew that WE all agreed about what we saw at that show.. but it's nice to hear that others experienced it too. For me anyway!

Anyway... the oranges were the first year, when we sat in the far end zone and ran into "B. Rad". This was 92, so right before Ed got hitched and right after you did. My bro was with us and so was LB! And then S miracled Ed in the middle of their honeymoon with tix to the last show of the summer. Good year! I'm thinking I need to get a CD for Easter weekend!

Auntie Rigga

Yeah Kama - it certainly is nice to hear we weren't just stoned out of our minds and imagining it! :rotflmao

But I wasn't so stoned as to forget who was with us! (What I want to know is why do we always run into scary people we don't want to see in Vegas?)

I seem to remember annoying certain members of our crew last year with the only Dead CD we had...Poor Richard. But the fish seemed to like it!

However, I'm thinking that your dd hasn't properly learned to dance with us on the lawn...might have to remedy that at Easter.:kiss

Hi there!
I just wanted to ring in on this thread. My name is Yvonne (31) from Orange County, CA. I frequented dead shows too when I was 18-24yrs on the west coast with my friend who is now my hubby and the father of our children.

I saw phish a few times but I was older then and didn't know anybody there and I was also working at the time so I couldn't make many shows.

Now that we have two small children we don't do much anymore, but we will as soon as they get older for being babysat for longer periods of time.

We have two girls, Cassidy Willow is 16 months, and Autumn Rainne is 4 years.

My husband and I got married in 5/95 in vegas in tie dyes after a dead show. That was the last show we saw before Jerry died.

Cassidy has a fever today so I can't say as much as I like. I'll talk more later.

Was deadicated while living in Atlantis Co-op at Michigan State U. during 1989-2001. Only got to four shows (Cleveland/Richfield Coliseum; Hamilton, Ontario; Atlanta (93) and Deer Creek, but loved every minute. On "Without a Net", the "Dear Mr. Fantasy" track is from the Hamilton Ont. show. It segued into "Hey Jude".

Man, I can taste those parking-lot grilled cheeses now ("grilled cheese for a buck! What the f!"

All this orange talk is freaking me out!!!!!!!

One year in Vegas I had a real weird experience(that's all that I'll say for now ;) ), and I had to get some oranges for my friend who was recently diagnosed as dibetic and needed the sugar. I had one in my pocket and a little later had an "accident" which sent me to the hospital. Needless to say it was a strange thing to experience to find a smashed up orange in my pocket as I lay on a hospital bed with tubes stuck in me all over....

Hello everyone!!!

I am also very fond of the boys. I miss it dearly like all of you. Some people have framed pictures of their gods in their home. We have a framed picture of Jerry.

I dropped out of high school to follow the dead. I loved the music. I did the drugs, NEVER in my car- I was NOT risking seeing them play. I truly was there for the music.

I saw 53 shows and was a wilderness instructor for the last half of the summer tour before Jerry died.

I listen to the dead all the time and dd loves it too. She points to the photo of Jerry and says "Jerry, gahtar!". I really can't think about the music too much as it seems like a nightmare that I'll never get to see and hear Jerry play again.

I lived a couple blocks away from Martyrs' in Chicago when Dark Star Orchestra got started and WOW did that feel awesome. I'm in San Diego now (Dunn_Dad I would love to burn some Cds if that would be ok! :)) and DSO will be here in a week to play a bar up north...I'm SO EXCITED!!! Have you seen them? Heard about them...if not WOW...www.darkstarorchestra.net

So glad y'all are here! Isn't just great to play the dead for our little ones? So many life lessons and good times in these songs. I too wish dd could experience the dead..:crying

Somehow someday...back to building the time machine to visit old shows...

Much love to all of you,

julie

Checking in on the deadhead thread again. It's so awesome to see that we really still are everywhere!

I noticed lots of us have children named Cassidy! What's up with that??!!:wink Ours is a ds, 3/12 year old now who was named because Reconking was playing in the room when he was born and the song Cassidy was playing as he crowned. Now it;s his special song and he knows all the words. A few weeks ago he asked me what a "Cadillac" was?!

Anyway, do you folks go to other shows as well? Panic, Phish, SCI, etc? Papa & I just saw Gactic last week & it was the hottest show we've seen since P Phunk!!! Next show up is Widespread Panic in April!

Just saw this thread, so, another dedicated mamma joinin in!!!!! Someone mentioned the 94 show in Deer Creek, I was there!!! AHHHH the memories!!! I found them in high school ,but didn't see them until 93, the year I was free!!!!! A bit too late if I had it to do all over again though.
OHHH I sooooo miss the boys, wish Ds would have gotten to experience them (blueberry mamma your daughter must have really enjoyed having Jerry sing to her, and i bet he liked seeing her there too ~ what a story!!!!!). But we dance lots, and he has gotten to see some killer shows anyway. His first show was at out local Sloar Fest and SCI was playing, they were wonderful, and then David Grisman was here last year and they were great too!!! Anyone ever check out the Telluride Bluegrass Festival??? Very kid friendly and lots of old heads, new heads and everyone in between. But still, I'd give anything to see the Dead again....
At one of the last shows (anyone here at the very last one???? kinda knew Jerry was goin huh :( ~ but that Black Muddy River, how beautiful, and what a send off) in Pittsburgh they played Bird Song, we were on the floor and I was spinnin and looked up to see bunches of birds flying over the stadium ~ I think they were flyin high on the music too!!!!!!! How couldn't they be though???
Nice to see that the band keeps playin on in all our hearts:love

:hippie :love :)

Hey someone mentioned Acoutsic Hooka ~ but ya spelled it differently??? Can't remember ~ and I don't really know them that well ~ but I did see them when I lived in PA and they were really great!!! Haven't thought of them in a long while, thanks for bringin that memory back!!!!

Hi omegamama !! I actually have only heard her on our local radio station, and they were giving her new CD away the other day and I won it!!! Woo Hoo!!! I don't usually call but I heard some of her songs off the new one and some of them are really great, I REALLY like the one with John Popper playin along (can't remember the name right now though???). Never have seen her live though, but she has a great voice!!!!!!! Love that quote too, makes me think of DS!!!!

blueberrymama~ SCI fan here! Love it love it. Got some great shows from a mama here on MDC, and some more from a buddy. Hope they are at one of the gatherings again this year as the kids are now old enough to go over night to Aunties house!
Its so cool so many of you take your kids to shows, but I dunno.....I dont really want to pay for them to get in and not have them enjoy it. Unless of course all of you are going to be there with your kids :) I plan to go this summer.....the first summer in forever I am not (yet!) pg/nursing/changing diapers!!! Maybe we will run into you all.
Anyone in the PA/NJ/NY tristate area? Hexfest is right down the street from us. I lol at the guy who hosts it....he said "come on over...I am having a little camp over concert in my backyard".

Wow this thread has gotten big! I saw it a month or so ago but never got around to posting. Our little guy isn't quite one yet, so we're not going to festivals this year :crying but I'm hoping some good shows head our way at the ampitheatre so I can sit back on the grass with him. Heading out tomorrow to see Phish in Greensboro (well, dh is while ds and I hit the pool at the hotel). At least I made it to the shows at Hampton (right in our backyard). Love the shows, but it makes me miss the Dead so much and regret that ds won't be able to experience that scene. Glad to know there are so many of us still kickin'.

Aug 9 has been such a significant date to me. I moved to Eugene the same day Jerry died. And then, 6 years later Stella Blue was born at home.

I was always about the music. The scene was getting to me. But I look back on how much I whined about it and wished I knew how grateful I should have been. It pains me my kiddos will never see a show. Dh too. He loves that part of me, but it is something we just don't connect on. We did see darkstarorcestra last summer at the oregon country fair. I was surprised at how blissed out I was! Very nice.

We play a lot of Dead around here. My more serious ds seems to prefer Dylan, but Stella sure has got the groovy-thing going on!

So glad to meet you all!

Welcome Pottermamma! So wonderful to see someone else enjoyed that '94 Deer Creek show. *magical.. Thanks for your kind words. I cherish that time of Cassidy truely connecting to the band. Although I believe it began in the womb. Pappa & I went to shows until 8 1/2 mths pregos w/ her. '93 Eugene. Dancing w/ that big 'ol belly & the bass thumping & belly vibrating from the music a very fond memory. :*)

serenetabbie that's great you make it to SCI shows. I found it was easiest for our family to see shows when the kids were young. Still on the boob & in diapers. Especially before walking age! hehe!

Mamma2Addison, I heard from friends that that show was absolutely amazing. Hope you enjoyed it too!

mama-wanna-be other music of interest lately besides the Dead, Phil & Friends & others mentioned here, Mule, Warren Christmas Jam, Galactic & Particle, Radiators. We'll be seeing Particle next Fri for the first time. Excellent jazz. Very psychedelic.. Ever hear "Pappa Grows Funk" or Big Railroad Earth? How about David Nelson Band? Lots of great stuff to listen to these days!

I'd definately be interested in checking out the wares of you seamstresses here. I craft sterling silver wire wrapped jewelry using beautiful stones & would be interested in trading for other fine goods. Would love to find a fat handcrafted skirt or dresses for the girls.

Hey Blueberrymama ~ I'm sure your little one grooved real hard on the good music she heard while growing inside momma's belly!!!! How wonderful!!!

I've heard of Railroad Earth but I haven't heard them called Big Railroad Earth, so I was just wondering if they were the same band, Ya know, whats the odds that there'd be 2 bands with such similar names ~ and the RR Earth I know is sooooooooo awesome!!!!! The album I have is called the Black Bear Sessions, and there is a song on there (one of my favorites, but I don't know the title, the album was burned form a friend and he didn't give me a list of the song titles) that has a few lines in it that goes "Its a 7 story mountain, its a long long life we live, gonna find a light and fill my heart again" Is this the same band???? I heard RR Earth at last years Telluride BG Fest and they rocked!!!!!! If they aren't the same band, I'd definately recommend giving RR Earth a listen!!!!!!

OH, and just wanted to give some info to the sisters that want to get some new music from the net. Dh swears by nugs.net. He's gotten some great shows off that site and says they have the clearest recordings by far ~ and they are totally free!!!!!!

Blessings to all for some great summer music festivals!!! It has been very warm here lately so I have the itch!!!!!!

I have never posted to this thread before and just wanted to say hello. I have never had the chance to go to a dead show, at least one with jerry. Garcia left this earth plane before I came to my senses and started becoming a free and true sister. I have been to many great concerts though and miss travelling and dancing gettin into the vibe with others. I got lost for awhile when husband and child came into my life. I think I got to serious instead of havin some serious fun. We are going to travel now as a family. working on getting back into the groove. we are going to costa rica first. Not sure how many cool bands go down there but I'll just have to see.

I was only able to go to three shows before Jerry died. :crying

Long before my first Dead show I was in Colorado with my first husband, and a bunch of hippies in a VW bus parked next to our car at a convenience store, strange music wafting out the windows. :D Something stirred deep in my heart, and I had a very strange longing to ditch my (very mainstream, conservative) husband and go with them, which of course I had no trouble convincing myself was just entirely insane. But I have always remembered, and always regretted at least not talking to them. I carried them around in my heart for a long time, just waiting for another opportunity. And it eventually came. :D

WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!

Just scored tix for the WI shows this summer!!! They are playing Somerset AND Milwaukie!

I am so stoked- Dylan AND Hunter are going to be there! Somerset is pretty close to Hwy 61, I think. I've never seen Hunter before!

This definitely redeems dh for dragging us cross-country to this god-forsaken place this winter!

Life is so good! :p

Hey, just was looking around on pollstar and found the shows for the Bridges School (Neil Young and his wife's school for challenged children). Lots of great acts but All of The Other Ones are playing and it is supposed to be a mostly accoustic show, with lots of unscheduled pop ins (that is what the site said anyway???). It is in California (of course) so I can't go, but thought if any of you could you might be interested ~ It sounds like a WONDERFUL show!!!!

I can't call myself deadicated, I've only seen them once, February 1989 in L.A. Honestly I was tripping so much I can't remember much of the show. DD was born 9 months later. I was so sad when Jerry died (as I was when we lost John Lennon and Freddy Mercury). Especially sad to know that dd would never be able to see him play. She was still a toddler when he died.

A bit OT, but I was watching the Woodstock DVD over the weekend and felt a little pain in my heart when the clips with Jerry in them came on. He was so young.....

Arduinna, he was so young at Woodstock. So so so young.

And they were so awful at Woodstock. So so so awful. A legendarily awful show in Dead-lore ... :LOL

DH was there. Doesn't remember any of it. :LOL

LOL, that must be why none of their music made it into the movie or soundtrack (not even the anniversary box set).

Shucks, my reply just got completely erased! Anyway (I'll try again) hello fellow deadheads! Nice to see you all here, I'm new around these parts, just cruising around the board seeing what's up. I had the great fortune to see the GD quite a bit, and have also enjoyed a bunch of post-GD stuff (not nearly as much though) especially Phil & Friends - that's some good music there. :)

Never did get around to seeing Phish though - but then, I'm 45. :D Not that it has anything to do with the Dead, but others mentioned it.

I'm going to try to post this before I get erased again! Looking forward to summer "The Dead" tour a lot, should be fun, we have tix to SPAC and will see when dh can get away from working to check out some more. P&F may be doing a fall tour, I hear.

Oh, I guess that worked so I'll say some more, I was getting a bit tired of typing out longish posts and finding the whole thing disappeared out from under me! :eek

Anyway, all my kids have been to shows, like someone else said, mainly when they were very young. We have a 2-year-old now and he saw his first P&F when he was 6 weeks old, we sat in the back near the tapers (so as not to get trampled) and, of course, we always use earplugs. He's been to every show I've been to since he was born. We may (we are discussing) leaving him w/my sister in law when we go to SPAC next month. Or bring him, but now that he's so mobile & active it would be much harder. My 13-year-old started coming again a couple of years ago, but she doesn't always, only when it's not too far away (and I feel like paying for a ticket for her).

Well, it'll be here soon yay! Okay, he woke up & is kickig my arm stead of nursing placidly, later ladies!

What is your favorite Dead book??

Don't know if this is my favorite, but dh just bought me A Long Strange Trip (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0767911857/qid=1052277763/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8753270-3033627?v=glance&s=books) by Dennis McNally, the GD publicist. It was a good read, from a historical pov. At 600+ pages, it was full of ancedotes and facts- yet I didn't really walk away knowing more about the boys. He focused alot on the early years, which was weird b/c he was not a part of that history. But he is a historian, and I appreciated the book from that angle.

I love to hear some recommendations!

Oh and speaking of favorite books, I really enjoyed Dark Star - an Oral Biography of Jerry Garcia by Robert Greenfield. And I also enjoyed reading McNally's book.

Last year, I was reading it in the car while dh was driving (I need to read to keep my mind off his driving ;) ) and dh was also handling the music, keeping it coming as we were on a long ride. Anyway, I was near the end of the book where McNally quoted the lyrics to "Days Between" and just as I started to read the beginning of the lyrics, the opening notes of "Days Between" came over the stereo. {{Insert Twilight Zone music here}}

Just one of many synchronistic moments in this wonderful life. :) :hippie

Another cool book is The Book of the Deadheads, but I think it is out of print, although I'm sure it's available somehow. I had the book for months before I saw my picture in there, although it's in a crowd scene (at the Warfield looking down at the lobby from the stairs). Those were fun shows!

Hmmmmmm. Deadly synchronized moments. Let's see, ladies, I'm sure we can pull a few out of our collective tams ...

Here's mine. :D

Many many moons ago, I had two kittens and a roommate who was (&still is) a friend-since-birth. So a coworker of mine was into animal rescue, & one day brought into the office :eek a beautiful cute little kitten she'd found on the street the previous month, her little head stuck in a fence, crying ... & couldn't keep herself, her dogs weren't happy. Anyway, so I called roommate at her job and said, oh, please, let's have another kitten. She was not pleased, did not agree. Okay, no kitten.

An hour later, talking to coworker, looking at the kitten in the box, she tells me, "And when she was in the fence crying, I looked up and saw it was about to rain, so hurried taking her out of the fence, and named her Rain." So I said, awww, what a cute name.

Roommate called me just at that moment, wanted to discuss what we were doing about dinner that night. Okay, so in the discussion I say, "Oh, this kitten, she's in the box, she's so cute, & her name is Rain."

Roommate is silent. Then says, "You must bring home this kitten today."

Why, I say?

She says, "Put on WNEW right now." (local NYC rock station in those days ...)

What was on? "A Box of Rain."

:D :hippie :D

Rain is now a very fat 12yo cat.

Oh, wait a sec, just remembered another synchronicity story ...

Nassau Coliseum, somewhere in the late '80s. I'm wearing my most beloved pair of ... well, we called 'em thongs back then, but that means something different now, so I'll say flip-flops just for clarity's sake. Soft sandals for my feet.

Took 'em off at the beginning of the first set, dancing directly behind the stage. Lost track of 'em.

End of the last encore, directly across from the stage, at the far end of the arena ... lights come on ... and there are my flip-flops, at the base of the stairs next to where we're dancing.

:eyes

Maybe that's not synchronicity, but it certainly was ... weird ... IYKWIM.

Not sure if these qualify Amy, but what the heck....

Well, there's the part about how you might not always hook up with people you hoped to, that you knew had tickets to that show but you would, inevitably run into someone you had no idea would be there... a wonderful surprise. Happened to me dozens of times.

I had a lovely conversation with a buddy of mine when I brought hom to his second (and last) show shortly before Jerry died. the one he had been to had been bad. That level of truly bad that the Boys stumbled into now and then. But I miracled him after my roomie backed out so he gave it a shot. So, sitting up in the grass at Shoreline, I'm dancing, he's sorta, but having a good time. Half way thru the first set he leans over to me and says, "I know this is gonna sound crazy, but you see those three girls over there in little hippy dresses dancing on the blanket?" 'Uh huh..' "Well, I could swear I saw those same girls at the show my other friends took me to 4 years ago!" I said, "Yeah. I've seen those same three girls at every show. I've even been those three girls." He looked at me very puzled for moment and then laughed and nodded his head.

Love is real not fade away! We are still here. Living in Berkeley I feel fortunate. There is a Grateful Dead nite at The Ashkanez. Where kids are welcome (although it starts so late, rarely are kids going) and lots of old faces from tour on telegraph, a little dire I might ad...

I too an grateful that some of the nonesence involved with being a deadhead is well behind me. I am longing for deadhead friends with kids. It is hard, even in a place like Berkeley to feel connected to a community, most people are so busy and in a rush and deadheads here are mostly like, the homeless junky types.

My daughter is 2.5, we'd love a deadhead mama and kids to frolick with...waddayasay?

Tweeter Center - Great Woods, Massachussetts

Hi all- DH and I are going to see them in a few weeks and were curious if any of you have been recently there. I am curious about their security about once you get in to the gates - they say I can't bring in a backpack or any food. As a pregnant mama, I can't imagine not bringing in a bag with water and food! Does anyone know how strict they are? We're going to hang out in the lots all day but I want to have at least a *little* comfort on the lawn for a few hours!

They say no lawn chairs, and you can't rent any. Will I be able to bring in my Crazy Creek?

Okay, this is a really tasty link with lots of video clips of the GD over the years, including Monterey (1967) Viola Lee Blues which is delectable. I don't think it would work too well if you don't have a high-speed connection but it's worth going to the library, or wherever, to check out if you don't. (I think.) :)

Hi RachelMolly, I haven't been there but I would recommend seeing your doctor or midwife, and getting an official-looking note from her/him on letterhead or a prescription pad saying that for health reasons (they don't have to specify) you need to bring in food & water & whatever. My husband and I did this because I was breastfeeding and we brought our baby to a show last summer, at a venue that I didn't expect would have anything I'd be willing to eat. Everyone else was getting turned away with their backpacks and such, but we were allowed to bring in everything after showing the doctor's note to a security guard. Water, hummus sandwiches, raisins etc. This was for Phil & Friends, I don't know if it's going to be as mellow for "The Dead" but hopefully it will. :p Good luck!

Hi All,

I have been meaning to post on this thread for a while, but never seem to get around to it. I have never been to a dead show, being in Canada is kinda a disadvantage as not to many shows come even remotely close to these parts. Dh and I had big dreams of following the dead when we met, but then Jerry died........

We are very excited as we are making a grand road trip to Somerset, WI to see the Aug 3 show YAY! Its gonna be a loooooong trip as I will be 36 weeks pregnant and we have a 2 year old, but the Dead AND Dylan??? How could we not go! Just gotta figure out the details (camping and such). Hey there, ladies ... :D

In the Books & Other Media forum there's a thread about songs that give you the (good chills) goosebumps.

So I included in my (very brief) list "Bird Song" and "Dark Star," with a particular point-out of the Hampton, VA Dark Star (I think it was 1990?) when they did the show billed as the Warlocks. The tape is so mind-blowing, as they do the first notes of "DS" and the crowd goes into a frenzy on top of it ... I can barely listen to the song after that, it's so intense ...

Anybody have their own particular goosebump favorite?

Just asking ... :D

The show in Virginia was awesome. It rained!
We drove up the outer banks of NC and it rained the whole way!
the parking lot was mus soup. and of course there was the mud slide on the lawn.
The mood was sooo mello and sedate. I'm interested to hear if that was because
of he rain or if they've mellowed the vibe a bit. it was awesome. kind of a steely dan groove.

Well, we saw them Friday night and I thought it was great. Just mail ordered for Jones Beach yesterday in fact.

I like Joan's contribution a lot for the most part, it's great to have a woman in the band again. (Susan Tedeschi was very cool, last fall, too.) I'm glad to see they're following the lead of Phil & Friends and choosing from their entire repertoire, including old stuff that didn't get played in the later years of the GD. It's just wonderful how much they are all obviously enjoying themselves! The newer guys still look like they just can't believe their good fortune, Phil has a huge smile on his face practically the whole time, and everyone is playing with great enthusiasm. I love Jerry of course, but the last several years of his life it just seemed like he wasn't into it, and was mostly playing with the GD out of a sense of obligation. I don't see anything of that attitude among the present members - it's obvious to me that everyone is there because they want to be. :) I love that! :love

I hope the rest of you guys that are going have as good a time as I did!

Happy Birthday to me, indeed! Sat night's (6/28) dead show was amazing, to say the least...yeah, they are older and movin slower and yeah the feel of the show was overal mellow, but they still have it, and threw it down Saturday!

Here's the show: (WOWEE!!!)
I Jam>Alabama getaway, mama tried, lil red rooster, the race is on>truckin>jam>built to last>one more sat night

II drums>space>Playin>eyes>mason's children>china doll>unbroken chain>st stephen (complete w/william tell bridge and just a teaser of the eleven, WHOA!!)>jam>RIPPLE!!!!!>sugar mag

E: aiko, we bid you goodnight

Well, the setlist pretty much speaks for itself, mamas and papas ;)
Obviously, my biggest highlight was my Ripple (that is my FAVE song of ALL TIME!!), even with the flubbing. Hey, they made up for that when they closed it out, though. Another highlight indeed was Joan taking built to last and really giving it some ooomph. I swear at one point, the clouds opened up and all you could see was her burried in lights and fractals with the clouds gaping open around the arena, and I just knew Jer was smiling down on her, like as if to say, "good job, lil sista". She nailed it. But the real kicker was when she did China doll...I lost it on that one...it was so honest and soulful and powerful...a voice like an angel...singin so sweetly and from the heart...I haven't since Jerry felt like someone was singing directly to me and reaching inside of me and stroking my heart, so it was ironic? that the next time I should feel that way, would be w/Joan, yet backed by the same band.

The second set opening with drums was KICK ASS and exactly what I needed when I needed it, whew! The whole set just flowed as one big piece with each song seguing in out of the prior song's jam...eff'ing school is in session, kids! THey humbled me and reminded me where I learned it all from ;) That was incredible stuff! The songs themselves were enough to blow you out of the water...whenever would we before Jer died EVER get Mason's, unbroken, st stephen and ripple in one night?!!!!!! Now that they're getting on, they aren't holding back anything so we're just getting it ALL! They might've not had the energy of 20 or even 10 yrs ago, but they damned sure had the heart and soul going Sat night. I love it when I watch a band and they are obviously having fun too...Sat night was no exception.

The encore was even goosebump worthy-an extended aiko...mickey was having too much fun with us by then and then the gracious we bid you show closer...WOW! I've heard that that particular encore is a reserved one, one that is more rare and that they pull out at shows that they particularly enjoyed. How honored I felt when they "ripped" that up too! :D

I could go on and on about this show...definitely a memorable birthday present to me. You should take a listen to this one.

Oh, man, oh, man, I hate to be the lone voice of dissent here, but, WHAT?
I definitely would label myself a deadhead... and my DH has been to - literally - hundreds of shows (he was a taper, so we have them all on tape) - but I think this new stuff is really sad.
Just my opinion here, we all loved the Dead for different reasons:thumb
I heard some tapes from this tour, and we went to Merriweather to see the Dead and Winwood, and Winwood blew the Dead out of the water. The Dead are so incredibly prefabbed now! The jams would build and build and build, but then Herring would step back and just tinkle around and nothing ever came of anything! I'm sorry, but Jerry seemed like the only one with a real clue, and now that he's gone, it just seems it ain't what it used to be. They're still making the dough, but the music, for me, cannot touch what it used to be. It used to live and breathe and become a living entity. Now it looks like they're having fun and all, but... well...
I know of one band - Juggling Suns - who can take music to that next level, sometimes better than the Dead ever did. I think it's a shame that bands like that have to stand in the background while people go out and support something just for what they "used" to be, kwim?

I am far from one who should be reviewing anything they do, but yet I still want to share a happy day when I have one. I grew up on the dead, but was not allowed into shows. When I went away to college in '90 I saw them on my own accord at the garden in NY and was BLOWN AWAY!!! I knew that all my years of only listening to live shows had finally been realized there in Sep of '90!!!! To tell ya straight up, I've only seen 17 shows WiTH Jerry and then about as many (more, actually) with combined dead family efforts and further tours since then.

I KNOW that it kills some to hear them seemingly falling apart on the stage and NOT flowing and having no guided path that they used to readily show us!!! I know it must hurt die hard Jerry fans to this day to see them repeatedly "give in to the machine that is the dead" and tour b/c it is like their civic duty rather than their outlet or fun, but what I saw on Sat night was them having FUN, genuine FUN and LOVING what they did/do for a living, and giving us a show, FROM THE HEART! I know this may seem disrepectful, and trust that I in no way intend to sound poo poo, but I think if you take a listen to the 6/28 show then you might see what I saw....the fun they were having, the genuine thrill of pleasing the crowd, the enjoyment of their job, the flow of the tunes!!!!!! I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it, b/c although I haven't seen a whole lot live, I have grown up on this stuff, and truly believe that Sat night was a GOOD show, and one worth listening to.

No one is EVER gonna replace Jer, but if you stagnate on that path, then you'll never go further, and don't we all just wanna have "one more sat night" when it is that 7th day of the week?!! Give it a listen and pm me. I think you'll like Joan's MOST humble, honest, totally OUT there ON THE LINE, all out in the open for us, giving it all up to us fans, humble again, raw, intense, SOULFUL and yes, highly subjectively angelic and beautiful renditions of some real true beauties to your liking!! And if not, then apologies for bugging you, but I was expecting to NOT like her at all, and was soooooo blown away and pleasantly surprised when I just shut up and took it for what it was worth...just a VERY humble opinion from a 'youngin' on that scene.............

Wow, I am soooo late coming to this thread....

I grew up on the dead. Did not get to see many shows but the very first one I went to was with my girl scout troop in the 8th grade!!!!!! I was hooked from that point on.

DH played in a GD cover band for a couple of years. They played well, but not the same thing....

I still listen to GD daily. And DH found a GD onesie for the bun in the oven:)

We now follow Phish. I am pg now but this little one has already been to three shows in utero and will be going to two more in a couple weeks. East Troy, here we come! I just hope I don't go into labor. Cutting it a little close.....

I am hoping I don't go into labour at the Aug 3 show too :) I'll be about 30 hours from home, so it might create a few challenges LOL.

I was wondering how many of you have taken young kids to the shows? We are taking our almost 2.5 year old and were just wondering what to expect. Will we have problems bringing in stuff for him (snacks, drinks, diapers, etc)? We are on the lawn, so it shouldn't be a big deal, but any experience taking kids would be appreciated (we have taken him to a couple of festivals but they were very kid-friendly).

TIA

that you can never guess! Each venue is different.
For my future shows I will go online to find the
venue and its rules. maybe even cruise the gates
early to see how they are handling bags. In Virginia
they didn't even open my bag. Squeezed it a bit
but that was it! WOW!
In Indy last fall they patted my ass down.no bags
no water etc. I have been inthe position to have to trek
back to the car to return cameras blankets you name it.
I hate it when that happens....booooooo.....:jaw

Laurie,

How close to your due date will you be?!?! 30 hours away, wow! We will only be about 6 hours away and I would have to be three weeks early for it to be a problem. I am having a homebirth so I would be pretty disappointed if I had to go to a hospital AND miss the show! You can see that I warped priorities. I am curious how the shows work for people with kids. I have seen many at outdoor shows before but I never paid attention to how difficult it might be. I know for sure that I would not take a child to the indoor concerts. The air is just too toxic and the volume too loud. I do not think I have seen any children at those shows. Report back with your experience!

was awesome at Virginia Beach.
Many many toddlers up to five years old.
they ran the lawn together, a pack of about 15.
Everyone kept a careful eye not to dance on little toes.

There was a new born as well.

I'll be about 35 weeks when we go so I am pretty sure it'll be okay. I doubt I'll go that early. I am planning a UC so it doesn't really matter where I am (although obviously I would prefer to be at home). The only complication would be that the show is in the US and I am from Canada. I wouldn't look forward to explaining why I went down with 1 kid and came back with 2 when I got to the border LOL.

We are going to the Aug 3 show in Somerset, WI so if anyone has any experience with that venue I would love to hear it. I am also curious about camping around the area :)

Well, we went to the show in Great Woods a few weeks ago. Forget how many weeks I was (3rd trimester). And we had lawn seats. It was rainy and muddy. And I must say I was jealous of all those folks who managed to get past security. There were so many seats in the pavillion just open and waiting. I sort of wish security said to me, "go ahead pregnant mama."

We also didn't think it was a great show and we left early.

I was pretty tired just from standing for 2 hours.

I saw them a couple weeks ago. The show was ok, the venue sucked. It was really dirty and there was a bizzare drunken highschool crowd. Ugh.

The show itself had some rockin' moments and drumz was AMAZING! It didn't realize how much I missed it. The rest of the show was fairly uninspired. I'm glad the kids didn't come b/c it was definitely NOT a family-friendly scene. We left early because it was the longest we ever left them and I was getting anxious!

We are going to see them at Summerset with Dylan and Hunter. The kiddos will be with us there, but we will be prepared and I expect a more Deadicated crowd. :) I'm thinking it will be my last show. :(

Well, looks like I won't have to worry about the pregnant/toddler issues. We will not be able to make it after all-finances:crying Oh well, maybe next year.

Okay, summer's half over, no shows for me ... :crying

No money. No time. No ... well, you get the point.

So, what new music do you HeadMamas listen to? I know about Phish, I'm not that old hahahaha, but since I sort of tuned out after Jerry passed on, I need some help finding out what's happening.

Closest thing I have to new music is Soulfarm (http://www.soulfarm.net) and they played my wedding way back when, so they don't count ... :D

Please, I need updating ... more than a touch of grey here ... :LOL

Well, I'm sure there are other that could give you a bit more help than I, but ~ I LOVE Spearhead (Michael Franti) Really conscious lyrics, Culture is awesome, MOE, Widespread Panic, and Dh and I have gotten into a lot of bluegrass also ~ Railroad Earth is really good, Sam Bush, Nickle Creek, (which is a really great group of homeschool kids that have been playing together since they were 8yo!!!!! they are now in their 20s and are doing some great things with their music), David Grisman and Peter Rowan (played iwth Jerry in Old and in the Way, I bet you know that though huh!!!!) are doing a lot of great things on their own now too...I can't think of any more, I still listen to a lot of old stuff ~ oldies but goodies right!!!!!!:love

Amy-there is this lovely lil website called jambase (or is it jambands....I'll check and post back in) and they basically lay out who is playin where and all that good info. I'm not sure of your tastes, but many seemed to like SCI a lot who didn't jump into or onto phish. Ummm, when String Cheese incident was more blue grassy, that is. You heard the Moe nod (I personally never dug them, but have some fun stuff on tape somewhere.....), then there is widespread panic, but I think they're closing up shop for a bit since Mickey houser died of cancer back several months ago...they're done with halloween, I believe. Ummm, I used to see juggling suns and blue miracle quite often several years back....there's always leftover and rusted root who you prlly know from further fame. Who else? DSO does dead shows verbatim and they always get rave reviews for their renditions. Yonder mountain string band? Rob't Randolph band? Hmmmm, who else? There are soooooo many jam bands out there these days that my 31 yo a$$ can't even (or doesn't want to, hmmmm) keep up! A LOT LOT LOT is out there to check out...just depends on yer groove and yer expectations! Get out and see live music! I always say :D

I really do have to give props to my phish, though. Yeah, they do wandering and ambient and sometimes aimless jams, but ohhhhhh, do they EVER just jam.....I feel for them like you guys do for Jerry/dead....sometimes I feel guilty for even posting on this thread b/c I love phish so much, but I do have a deep appreciation for the dead, so I continue to post....if it doesn't seem too baaah to do-give phish a listen. I can certainly point you in a direction with them ;)

LET THERE BE SONGS TO FILL THE AIR!!!! (I also like to say :D )

Juggling Suns. Mark Diomede, on lead guitar, has been jamming out since the 70's! My DH runs sound for them whenever possible, and every single DAT tape he makes of every show is absolutely amazing! The jams swirl around, in and out of different songs, and every member is so incredibly talented... every tape DH brings home with us sounds like a professionally recorded album. (Well, not really, since "recording" is usually done in the studio and does not feed directly off the energy of the crowd and vice versa). What I really love about the music is that the band and the crowd totally "get" what it is all about. They're all such incredibly kind, spiritual people... all about love and family. I've known Mark for seven years now... he is a guitar god and a truly amazing individual.

Ummm, I am technologically challenged, but if you wanna trade, I can get you TAPES of lotsa stuff for some Juggling suns stuff....I'd just like to have it as personal keepers, ifyakwim?

OMG! How lucky are YOU to have your dh doing sound for them?! Dangit, mama....you MUST have quite the musical arsenal, if you don't mind me speculating...email me at phishmama@msn.com or pm or whatever....would love to work out a trade!! Do you like Bob M or Jimi? I have extrememly little of each, but ones worthy of owning...some floyd, tons of phish, good amt of dead, randoms of moe, wp, etc., access to LOTs of other stuff from this heady dude you'd love....my bud C...he's mid 50's in age....seen dead live when I was in dipes...he's got such a love of the live music scene and is on a neverending journey for the next thing to make him happy since Jer died...beautiful person with lotsa great music!! You guys remind me of him and why I understand and respect why 'it hurts "you" too' when the other ones or the dead or whomever sans Jerry play....he keeps me in check and makes me grow in musical appreciation. I thank everyone who does that to me for that!!! MWAH! (that's a big ol wet kiss, btw). :D

Thank you, Jerry, and may you RIP.

I was even at a phish show in 98, I believe it was 98, when they played terrapin station in honor of Jerry, on this very day. I do truly miss him and his genius. No one has ever since played so sweetly for me, and that I am so thankful to have had, and so sad b/c I miss it.........yep, hurts me too.

Thanks for letting me share. :hippie

Fare thee well, Jerry - you are missed more than words can say. What a terrible day August 9, 1995 was. BTW - deadhead here at the Jersey Shore (Married 8/1/92, dog's name Ripple, ds name Jack Jerome!) Also, Mark from Juggling Suns plays most Thursday nights at The Ark in Point Pleasant - truly spectacular!!! Come and hear the magic!

What a sad day. I'll never forget. I left work that morning and went to venice for a memorial. I had just gotten married after a dead show in Vegas less than 4 months before this. I hardly came out of my house for two weeks.. Life as I knew it was over.
We miss you! :guitar
Today is my moms b'day too.
Do you ever wonder if there is a reason they're calling themselves "The Dead", are they not Grateful anymore??

Sad. :bawl

Ohh, I believe they are indeed still grateful, but out of respect these days are just going by 'the dead'. They were 'the other ones' for a bit after he passed for some tours....that stung but spoke volumes....like, HEY! We're still here! We ALL didn't pass with him!!! but today isn't the day to speak on my thoughts on Bobby's hangups, if ya kwim.

I think they've always been and always will be the dead...tis how many refered to them over the years anyway. Always grateful too. ;) I sure know I am, grateful that is! :D

Subscribing to the thread - we're still Deadheads here. Hoping sometime to see The Dead, but knowing it won't be the same.

This past weekend (Saturday night) one of the local PBS stations showed the Goodbye to Winterland concert ... didn't get to watch much of it, it was on very late at night and it was a very long show ... but man, were they young.

They had recent interviews with them intercut in the show (between the PBS "become a member" stuff) and ... whoa. Are they old.

Haven't seen 'em in a while. Haven't been to any post-Jerry shows, so it was a real treat to see them playing, talking, anything ...

Wow.

Jerry looked so healthy then (whether or not he really was) and so happy playing ...

Wow.

Hey mamas - I was driving in the car this week, playing a show, and Eyes of the World came on. DD was sleeping in the back. I was curious, if in the same vein as playing Mozart for babies, if playing the Dead has had any positive affect on your little ones? Do you ever feel like you're trying to imbue them w/good vibes? Or, am I just sounding really nuts?

I avoided this thread for a while... jealousy of those seeing shows was too much.

Amy... I saw some of that Winterland show too. Bonnie and I danced around the living room... it was awesome! I kinda wish it hadn't been a Donna era show, but ya takes what ya gets, huh? New neighbor has a Stealie on his car and a son just Bonnie's age. Should be a nice change from the people who yelled at their grade school kids constantly and blasted heavy metal while revving their Camero late at night.

How great that this tribe is so many pages long that I can't read it all!

I'm Lori, a Grateful Mom (a young grateful Mom, but grateful nonetheless!) of three. Happily married.

I miss Jerry so much. I think his voice will always bring tears to my eyes. And Brent too.

Life blew us to the East Coast awhile before Jerry passed on - and we haven't been to a show since. Frankly didn't see any reason to go without Jerry (our version of mourning I guess)...

But recently we've come to a new place and maybe will get out there and see what The Others are doing.

So many things have changed since our Dead Tour days. I miss it, but appreciate all the changes.

Glad to meet you all :wave

I can't believe I missed this one. I had to put my two cents in. I love the fact that there is almost 10 pages of deadheads. That is sooooooo awesome. I travelled around with the dead for a couple of years and loved it. I loved dancing, meeting cool people, and everything. However, I went to see the Dead at the Gorge ampitheater this summer and it wasn't the same. It was the first time I had s
