Hi everyone! I used a baby bjorn when ds was born and I loved it, but it seems that during early infancy a sling would work better.

Could someone give a newbie like me recommendations on slings that are easy to use (and pretty) :)

Thanks!

This is my fave site for info on baby wearing, incl reviews on products, etc.: http://www.thebabywearer.com/

You have to register and login to use but it is a great resource!

Why carrying a baby in a Baby Bjorn-style carrier is unhealthy: http://www.continuum-concept.org/reading/spinalStress.html

Good luck! :)

I highly recommend an unpadded sling - there are MANY different ones to choose from (Maya Wrap, home made slings, etc) but unpadded is definitely the way to go as opposed to a NoJo or Over The Shoulder Baby Holder. I used a NoJo for the first year with my first baby and loved carrying her, but when I discovered unpadded slings I couldn't believe how much more comfortable and versatile they are.

By the way, it's not just during early infancy that slings work well...you can carry children in slings up through toddlerhood.

Personally the side sling never worked for me but I loved my wrap. I used the baby bundler and it's sooo snuggly.

Slings were what I used early infant and Bjorn last time. Then I discovered the baby bundler and found how much more comfortable it can be. I plan to use it more this time around and you can slip baby in and out.

Which one is easiest to nurse in? I'm in the market for a new one too. Last time I made my own from the Elizabeth Lee Designs pattern, and I was going to make a new one (minus the bulky padding) but I think I'd rather just buy a good one.

i also never had luck with the sling until my son was a toddler, then it was great to carry him on my hip.

i LOVED my wrap. i had a hug-a-bub (hugabub.com) which i highly recommend but i've heard amazing things about the didymo wrap which i'm hoping to get. http://www.didimos.de/english/index_e.htm. same principle, different fabric. i'm psyched to use it this time around from day one. i only found out about it last time when my son was four months old. four months wasted w/o a wrap!! :lol

I loved my Ultimate Baby Wrap. Perfect in every way! You might want to check out the baby wearing boards. It is "infinite information"! :)

The only thing I didn't like about it was it seemed excessively long; I don't know if other wraps are shorter. There is one made in europe called the kari-me that looks great. www.kari-me.com

I ordered the most beautiful ring sling off of ebay, it's black and has a beautiful asian inspired brocade trim...

I think mine's from MayaWrap, but it doesn't have a ring, it has several zippers for sizing. It's not bulky at all and I love it! DH and I can both use it, adjusting the zippers for our sizes. It's basic black.

My 8 day old baby is peacefully sleeping in my Maya Wrap right now (woo hoo, 2 hands free!). I never got the hang of using this when DS was a small baby, partly because he never liked the cradle hold. So when he was tiny we used the Bjorn and then the sling once I could put him in upright.

I have a Moby Wrap also that I thought I would love, but I find I get all tangled up in it. I guess I need a little more practice with that one.

I also plan to get a fleece pouch for winter time. I like the ease of the pouch, from what I have seen.

I'm going to get a Kangaroo Fleece Pouch http://www.kangarookorner.com/k_shop_pouches_custom.shtml they look so comfy! A friend had her newbie in one the other day & I loved it! I'm wondering if the babe will get to hot later on in the summer....I'll wait & see how I like the fleece one & might order a cotton or mesh one for summer.

I've used an unpadded ring sling, a woven wrap and a stretchy wrap. (Oh and the NoJo I tried for 2 minutes and decided never again) My favorite all around is the stretchy wrap (I make my own) but for very tiny NBs I used the ring sling as well. I plan on making a couple other carriers this winter over semester break, I want to try Mei-Tei inspired carrier and a pouch at least. Wraps tend to be longer because you can use them in so many different positions, some which require much more fabric than others. I've used a good sized scarf in a pinch for simple holds and it worked great.

Zolowear pouch or ring sling, most definitely!!! Your shoulder/back will NOT hurt or get sore, even after carrying your baby for hours! Check them out.

I second the Kangaroo Korner Fleece Pouch. I work at Happy Bambino in Madison, WI, & this is by far our biggest selling baby carrier. At times we have problems keeping them in stock. You can use them from infancy to toddlers. They are VERY easy to use!
