I'm almost 34 weeks pregnant and measuring 46cm, so my dr's pushed my u/s up to today.

And what do you know, I'm having twins! This is me right now: Trying to shake off the shock.

They both look great, and are about 5lbs 12ozs each. Fraternal, and both girls!

So woohoo! But we have SO much to do. We are completely and totally unprepared.

Wow. Congratulations! That's amazing you could get so far without knowing. Weren't you extra hungry, extra tired, extra nauseous, felt extra movements etc??

Thanks everyone :)

I actually have suspected something for about the past 3 weeks. I didn't measure ahead until about 30 weeks, and then not by much. Since about 32 weeks I've been jumping ahead tons - to 46cms yesterday.

As for movement - both placentas are anterior which buffered a lot of the movement. I felt movement later in this pregnancy than with my previous two.

If I had an ultrasound earlier on of course I would have known. I didn't plan on having one at all until I switch from my mw's care to the ob's care. My body has been breaking down bad, so I decided on a repeat c/s (long story!). Otherwise I would have homebirthed twins and not known! I wish my body was in better shape because that would have been really cool (other than the obvious logistacal stuff).

Yes, first u/s. I had originally planned a HB so wasn't going to get one at all. I had one scheduled for wednesday of next week. When the NP measured me at 46cm, she called and begged them to squeeze me in today.

Congratulations! At least you have a month to wrap your mind around the idea and get ready. Imagine that surprise twin homebirth!

I am also planning a hb and not having an u/s. I had twin vibes early on in pg, but at 25 weeks, I'm still measuring normally. I asked my mw about it specifically, and she said there are no other twin indications. So, I had put it out of my mind... but now your story is making me wonder again! :lol

Best Wishes!

Thanks everyone. I have had huge amounts of offers of clothes and diapers from my 3 major online communities. I am so greatful and I think everything will work out just fine. It is shocking to just find out now. Not being quite prepared for one, and now this is overwhelming. It sounds like we will be well prepared thanks to so many wonderful people helping us out!

As for how nobody knew... there are a few factors that played into that.

1 - I didn't start measuring ahead until 30 weeks. Normally with twins the woman measures ahead starting between 26-28 weeks (says my MW).

2 - Both placentas are right in front. I actually felt movement really late in the pregnancy. Throughout the whole pregnancy I've not noticed more much more movement than with my first two.

3 - The placentas also made it hard for the mw's to feel two babies. My MW's partner had a slight suspicion at my last visit. She didn't say anything because she knew I had a u/s set up.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twins are so awesome. As a new mom to twins, my only advice is to get all the help you can. Seriously. Have someone stay at your house for the first 6 months if possible. No joke. It's exhausting, but even at 2 months I can say that it's fun.

Get plenty of rest, drink gallons of water and eat more protein than you ever thought possible. It sounds like the babies are growing great!

Come on over and visit the Multiples board!

Congratulations!!! That is my dream come true. I'm hoping I'm currently pg with twins, but I'm not having an u/s at all so in my case it would most likely be a surprise twin homebirth. I was measuring about 6 weeks ahead at my last appt (18 weeks) but I know that's no guarantee of twins. I kinda think I'm not (only feel movement from one baby as far as I can tell), so I'm super jealous! Enjoy this last month - it sounds amazing!!!

Are you still planning a homebirth?

I would love to have twins....they run in my family. And I would love to have a twin homebirth, but you have to be super commited here to get anyone to help you with one.

Can they usually hear two heart beats and tell if its twins? Just curious, I remember my mom saying they thought I was twins because I had a heart murmur.

Awesome, mama, congratulations!! How awesome to learn about them that way, thanks for sharing!
I have to say, I am getting huge (not twins, I had an U/S last week), and my DH and I had this big conversation about how we'd have to give one away if we have twins cuz we're so broke. Joking of course, but that piece would be part of the shock for me!!
Happy happy joy joy,
Marian

OMG! How exciting and scary at the same time. I always think it would be sooo awesome but having #3 and #4 at the same time would scare me.

I've had a lot of m/s (it continues at 16 weeks) this time (only threw up once or twice with my first two and nausea was gone by the 2nd trimester) so that sometimes makes me wonder about twins. I've been feeling movement for awhile but never in front and also the mw has had a lot of trouble finding the heartbeat so I suspect an anterior placenta. I'm not planning on an u/s either so I guess we'll just see what happens. ;)

I get all excited thinking about the possibility of twins, but then I panic and think only one is as much as I can handle at a time. LOL

I bet you are just scrambling to get things gone with only six weeks or so to go. :bolt
