I had my first prenatal today. I know, super early. The whole thing ended up being a little weird. I called the first of this week to make an appt and asked when the Dr. usually sees the Mom's for the first prenatal and was told 10-12 weeks. I told them it needed to be earlier because of the cerclage so she scheduled it for today. I'm thinking in my head "I had 8 weeks in mind but whatever". Maybe I should have stressed that I intended for it to be just a consultation. I didn't realize they would treat the whole thing like a real first visit. Duh, now it sounds like I should have.

Even though he is my pcp I've never been through an entire pg with him so I wasn't sure what to expect. I walked into the room and there is an U/S machine. They also asked if I needed a pap done and told them yes so I was undressed anyway, and yep, they did an u/s too. I knew they couldn't see anything so I'm not sure what the point was but we did see a blob. So that's the good news. I officially have a blob! LOL I was very much not ready for a pap, though. I didn't shower today and I have a forest on my legs! LOL Oh, yeah, and my uterus measures at 6 weeks.

I talked to him about co-managing the pg with a midwife and he was totally fine with that. He said he likes to do the initial visit and then insists on the 20 wk us, which I'm fine with. Then he will put in the cerclage and my midwife will take over from there, unless I have problems. I'm happy because it's about what I was looking for with him.

My next visit is in 4 weeks then we will schedule the cerclage surgery. It will probably be about the 21st of Jan.

Now I just have to decide on a Midwife.

May I ask why you need to do a cerlage? It was discussed with my last pregnancy, but they considered it too late. I had had a leep, and there was the possibility of an incompetant cervix. But I carried the preg. to term no problem. So I don't think I need it this time.

It's a pretty long story but if you are really interested I will share it.

My Mom took something called DES when she was pg with me. It was thought at the time that it would prevent miscarriage but it didn't work and it caused all kinds of other problems. One of them is incompetent cervix. Most of the time you have to lose a baby to be diagnosed with it but due to my exposure to DES and the fact that I have a short cervix my OB decided to go ahead and put it in anyway.

I have no idea if I actually need it but I'm not willing to find out because the only way to know for sure is to dleiver a baby without any labor ctx. Usually it happens about 18 weeks so not possible for it to survive. I'm not willing to have a baby die just to find out I need it. Hopefully that makes sense. If I sound defensive I apologize but when explaining it to natural minded women I worry that a lot of them will think it was an unneeded intervention. But in my mind it's totally justified.

I'm pretty sure that if you didn't have a problem with your last pg you probably won't. You can also get them to check your cervix length. Usually if you are going to have problems your cervix with start shortening. Usual length is 2.5 cms and that is done with a vag u/s.
