When I had Jevin my milk didnt come in until the 5th night. I was freaking out, crying cause I was scared I wouldnt get milk at all or that he was hungry. But I did and he got really fat really quick. LOL Anyways, I'm so hoping it's quicker this time around to avoid that initial freak out! What have been your experiences?

This is my first pregnancy and I am a little freaked that it will take a while too. So did you supplement at all? I really can't stand the thought of "teeny" being hungry. 5 days.... I am going to keep in close contact with a lactation consultant if there is any delay but I am also worried that I will be in the hospital and they will make me feel bad. Like, oh she isn't doing vacs, vit K etc AND she is starving her baby... I need to let this one go don't I.... maybe that is what is holding up the labor... Ha! I'm gonna go meditate on it.

I left 12 hours after he was born at the hospital so they couldnt bug me. I was getting colustrum, just not full on milk. I did give him a bottle on day 4. :( That is the only one he ever had cause I came and posted bawling and one of my hippie mama friends told me that would only make it worse and she knew I would be devastated if I ruined my milk supply. I'm glad I listened......ds turned into little nursing piggy and tripled his weight my 3 months. LOL He nursed until he was 2 years old.

Mine was almost exactly the same both times (3 days). Desiree, you have the experience and confidence this time to know that 5 days is just fine with your babies. Try not to be too anxious about it.

Hiya! I'm not due till July but I wanted to pop in and add my .02...

With my first my milk came in around day 4. With my second it came in almost immediately - before I left the hospital. I had nursed DD1 until I was about 4 months pg, but didn't nurse all the way through.

Even if your milk doesn't come in until day 5 your baby isn't "hungry" and there is no need to supplement. Babies have plenty of fat stores and the colostrum is really really good for them - just keep nursing and everybody benefits!

ACK! Don't supplement if you can at all help it. My totally unresearched but first hand knowledge is that everyone I know who supplemented in those first few days ended up with an acid reflux baby. Plus there can be problems with nipple confusion. The human nipple requires completely different muscles from the baby than an artifical nipple and it can be confusing to the baby because they don't have to work as hard with an artificial nipple - and that can cause later (or immediate) nursing problems.

The facts are that your colostrum has EVERYTHING your baby needs until the milk comes in. Just let him/her keep nursing whenever it seems right. Remember that women have successfully breastfed their babies for millions of years...long before formula came around!

It is actually extremely rare for a woman to not produce enought milk - despite everything you hear. So get in touch now! with someone really good - lactation consultant with a good mindset or a La Leche League counselor.

You can do it. Don't get intimidated by the formula freaks!
