Mind if i share my "crappy luck with cameras" story? This is not to scare you, btw :)
When I had my 2nd son, we wanted to tape the birth like we did the first. I brought my video camera and film camera with us. Great. So my mom is filming and the video camera battery dies. She's not a great camerawoman, btw, she'd leave it running and just let it go sometimes or film on "pause". So shebreaks out the film camera. Awesome. Snapping away as I push our baby into the world. Baby's head comes out and I hear a very distinct sound. I stop pushing to tell my mom how to reload the film. That's right, the film ran out!! She reloaded it but I had to start pushing agian, so I'mnot sure if she got pics of my DH catching the baby or not, we still can't find the roll of film.
Anyway, jsut thought I'd share my camera tales. We're buying new batteries, a new cord, and a new film camera (Ihope!) for this birth.

You might want to double-check your camera and manual. This same thing happened to me because I didn't realize that my camera actually has TWO batteries.
One is a large obvious rechargable pack. The other is a tiny, coin-shaped battery (thin and circular) that is hidden in the bowels of the camera. That one is replaceable and burns out if you don't use the camera for awhile. If you take your camera to Radio Shack they can probably help you figure it out and find the correct battery - which is not expensive. I hope you can fix it!

if it were up to me, i would just go and purchase a new digital camera right now. I have an Olympus Stylus 400, w/ 4 megapixels, which 2 years ago cost me nearly $400. well, now i can get the Olympus 800 w/, you guessed it, 8 megapixels, for under $400!!!
But DH is a TIGHTWAD
this is really stressing me out! DH took the camera today (to do what with it, I don't know...but he MAY take it to a store to see what is wrong with it..yeh right?).
I am sooooooooo on edge right now! Can anyone tell?

seriously, get a few disposable cameras just in case. that way, you KNOW that you'll at least get some of the most important shots...i'm sorry this is happening at the worst possible time. :hug

I can't tell if your camera is digital or a video camera. I am guessing digital so here is my story. I got a new camera last year. I loved it but one day I put new batteries in it and it said batteries are dead. So I put more new ones in and again said that same thing. Finally I thought screw it and I put really expensive new batteries in, WOW it worked. I found out that my camera has a mind of it's own and refuses anything cheapo :lol I am not sure about your chargeable batteries, but if it is a cheap version, then that might be your problem.

if i have to get disposables (which i will of course..thanks for the advice), i promise that i will order a ton of prints from them and get them all on a CD and order prints online...i'll retaliate against dh in a major financial way if i have to go through this stress! i really dont want anyone else seeing my labor pix other than us and those i wish to share w/ (dont need to local photo guy getting his kicks at my expense, KWIM?).
im too grumpy today..i should go back to bed! lol!

I'd try new rechargables. My house phone does that when I need a new rechargable battery. They are supposed to always recharge but sometimes they dont! LOL

What's the deal with birth and cameras? Our batteries ran out at our first birth (so no pics), and we cannot find our camera ANYWHERE to save our life right now. We've been looking for the last month and finally just sucked it up and bought a new one yesterday. I :throb my new camera!
I understand about not wanting lots of people looking at your pictures, but keep in mind, they get birth photos in every day and hardly think anything of it. I second the idea of trying to find someone's camera to borrow if you know of anyone.

what new camera did you get?
i hate the idea of buying a new camera when i really did love mine (until yesterday!).
and i know dh will consider that a gift to ME if we purchase a new digital.
i can't wait till i go back to work. oh, wait, i dont want to go back to work w/ the new babe. oh my, i wish i had planted that $$$$$ tree when i bought this house! lol!
rach (who took a nap and maybe now will be a little less grumpy).

Well.....I can't say it was a cheap one. We got a Canon EOS Rebel XT off of Ebay. It was around $400 for the body only. I also have a non-digital EOS Rebel that I can use my old lenses on. I have been wanting this soooo badly for the last few years because I hate our point-and-shoot digital camera because it doesn't have the features I want, but I love having the digital capabilities. I haven't taken many pictures in the last several years because I want both features! I am a photography nut, so this has been hard for me. So DH and I sucked it up and decided to spend the money on a new camera instead of buying Christmas and birthday presents for each other this year. It's still outside our budget, but I really want pictures of our new baby, so we felt it was worth it.

i'm with you on the camera thing. Our video camera stopped orking. well it records sound but no picture. can you imagine that? a birth soundtrack.
a bunch of screaming, moaning and grunting :lol
our film camera stopped working two years ago uring the hurricanes. the shutter doesn't open all the way. (somwthing we probably could have had fixed but who has the money?) so we have no camera. luckily sister has a very decent point and shoot digital and agreed to take pics and her boyfriend is going to use his video camera. how weird huh my sis's boyfriend filming my birth.oh well someone has to do it.
i am so annoyed though b/c i am a oicture fiend and i will have no camera when new baby comes home. I'd go for a family christmas present as a camera BUT we have to get a car that holds two carseats as the family christmas present.

OHMIGOODNESS! This is making me laugh so hard I am going to go into labor just thinking about it. Just last night I was reading in Birthing from Within that they recommend watching your birth video LONG after the birth and definately with the sound turned off. Wonder what they would think of yours?!? Just hilarious.

Also I have to say you are mighty brave to give DH the camera when he is the man who didn't fax your birth supply list until yesterday. Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have brought that up. ;)
I hope it all works out.

i sooo totally had that fear last night. i asked him where the camera was and he said "its in the car". granted, we have a garage and its good that it was in the garage, but i said i was worried about it being in the garage (its NOT heated), so he went to get it for me at 11pm.
i was just thinking "it can get stolen at work, etc.". i was looking at cameras online last night and he asked why. i just kind of rolled my eyes (to myself) but thought "b/c you will probably not get the camera fixed and i will be in labor looking in best buy and circuit city for a digital camera. if that is the case, i want to be able to find the cheapest one prior to having this baby, esp. considering they usually need about 4 hrs. for the battery to charge.".
this is so ironic b/c i was just advocating for my camera and the fact that the battery is a lithium rechargeable as opposed to the disposable or even the aa or aaa disposables. 2 days later, this happens. lesson? dont praise your electronic devices...they will take the spread of praise as your contribution to their existence and henceforth, YOU are not needed. they get from you what they came for and now they are gone! lol! dont know if thats true...just how i feel.

any recommendations?

glad so many babies are coming to mamas in DID! its so cool to hear all these great birth stories...i think this MAY be better than having my own birth story right now b/c it gives me more confidence!

a's parents gave his grandparents a fugi finepix a330 for their anniversary this last spring. his grandmother died this summer and his parents were fairly sure they'd barely used the camera and his grandfather wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. he gave it to them to give to us-- we had the MUCH older version of the same camera and it was seriously on its way out, so we are totally grateful for it. a ordered a new memory card for it yesterday as part of my christmas present, but we have to hope and pray it makes it here before the baby does-- the current card only holds about 16 pics!!

i've heard incredible things about the kodak easyshare. EVERYBODY i know has it and loves it.
i have the canon a620 or something like that. can't remember the number :lol i do like it. and i have a fuji finepix 2thousand series (can't remember what number) and i liked that, but it was pretty big...not really that convenient to carry around.
