hi. just popped in here to help you cause I think it's sweet when guys try to get good presents for their mates. It would help if you said what kind of woman she is - what she likes and dislikes but here are things I always like:

Bath products - spend the extra money if you can on something nice from a natural products store or aveda - don't get cheap stuff from walgreens.

Candles

A spa service like a pedicure or a massage. If that's out of your price range you could buy (or make) some nice massage oil and give her a massage yourself.

I would stay away from clothes or lingerie as most men seem to have a hard time picking those things out. However a sexy or really cozy robe and slippers is always nice.

I would stay away from kitchen appliances unless your wife is a serious chef as these gifts don't make a woman feel sexy, just domestic.

A night out to dinner in an intimate grown up place is always appreciated!

Good Luck!

I thought about describing what she's like a bit in my OP .... oh well ...

She's a crunchy type ... not very domestic and not a professional type either. Her personality lends itself to fun. That is her core motivation. She loves being a mom and staying at home with our ds.

Maybe that will help to narrow it down ....

My dh has gotten me in the past
a nice vest wrapped with a can of beans so I wouldnt be able to guess what it was :lol
books I would be interested in
earings
a fiber optic Christmas wreath becuase I think they are so pretty
a huge chocolate bar :lol
and the best one was he got my mom to take me to this town 70 miles away and while we where eating lunch the limo pulls ups and comes in and pages me, I get taken to this place for hair and makeup, the limo picks me up and takes me to this motel where I go into a room and there are these cards with numbers and each card has instructions it, ended up with me getting a full body massage while i had a blind fold on. Dh did the massage but we never spoke nor did I see him after he left I was called on the phone saying look in the closet and wear the dress youll find there, the limos come for me again and takes me to this fancy resturant but the limo guy tells dh who is waiting for me that we still have a half hour to use up, get in and he will take us for a spin to look at lights. The night ended by us having dinner and going back to the motel for the night. Twas wonderful and my friends :drool when they hear of how he planned this all out and how romantic it was. :love

He also bought me a Testubin tea pot becuase I love tea so much but that was a Valentines day gift.

You say your wife is fun so maybe you could get her a gift that would go with however she likes to have fun.

Last Christmas my DH and his family pitched in and gave me an i-pod. I know it is cliche- but it really has changed the way I do things- yard work, dishes, long car trips, working out, riding the bus, etc.. I love it sooooo much! Not sure how much you want to spend or if she has one- but I really like mine.

Yes! I second the spa service! Dh got me a gift certificate to a spa for Valentine's Day one year and wrapped it up with a romantic note. It was the best! She'll :love it!

Hey fatherArn. I got my wife (oakdalemama) a painting a couple of years ago that she really liked. I saw some other works by the artist that I liked and he painted it for me. I like the painting too as it reminds me of her awsome momness and all she's done for our babes. I'm hoping it conjures up the same memories in 50 years.

Here's a link Painting (http://www.pearsonart.com/pix_mother/give.jpg)

She's also enjoyed chocolate, massage, and good bath stuff as others suggested.

that painting is awesome!

hmm ... i know you said she's not a domestic type, but is she crafty at all or interested in learning a new craft? i would absolutely die if my DH got me some yummy yarn to fuel my knitting obsession. :down if there's a craft she's interested in learning you could put together a DIY kit with top-o-the-line materials and instructions. :thumb

other ideas ... pretty tapestries, an i pod, books on topics she enjoys ...

i'm really unromantic when it comes to what i want for xmas - like i'd love a pair of wool socks, a diaper sprayer, and a vacuum cleaner :lol. so that's something to consider as well ... is she in need of something that would make her life infinitely easier? tread lightly here, though ... not everybody takes a vacuum cleaner to mean "i love you" :lol if you considered this type of gift always do so in conjunction with something more "glamorous".

I also would love the spa treatment/nice natural bath product.
Maybe make something for her. Those are my favorite gifts. In the past my dh has put together a song with his guitar, so sweet. Hes also made me an art easel. For my b-day he made his own sent for me to wear out of ess. oils.
Its not the best sent :lol but it was a beautiful gift.

I'm not particularly domestic, and I don't have a professional obsession, so apparently I'm "hard to shop for." :wink

But I'm crunchy and like learning new things. My favorite was the year DH got me tai chi swordform lessons for Christmas. They were so much fun!!!

What a Nice DH! OK, here's what I want, feel free to pass it along to DP, <smile>.
OK, the Instant the kids are down.....
Put her in a hot tub a sudsy water, light a couple candles, give her a glass of wine and the latest brain rotting novel she's been working on for Months. Come back in 30 minutes and take her to bed and give her a Long ( like at Least 1/2 hour) massage with that oil she likes. Put another glass of wine on the nightstand with the novel.
Come back in the morning.
Mmmmmm,
TK

Just make it something feminine. Jewelry is always good. I love the site www.novica.com for jewelry. The stuff is very affordable and made my artisans from all over the world. Huge selection of stuff would appeal to crunchy and not so crunchy moms.

The gift should make her feel pretty.

I have my fingers crossed for a remote car starter. Being in a cold climate I consider going out to a warm car the ultimate in pampering!

Hmm in the past I have gotten her a Flute since she lost the one she had when she was in high school. That was totally out of the blue she said one like a few years ago that she wished she still had one to play so I did some research and found the perfect one for her.

Then I have gotten her BOOKS my wife is a book junkie I bought her the full set of Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series. Again she had them when she lived with her mom but got trashed by some flooding in the basement.

Jewlery always works but I only use that as a last resort as most of the time it does not take much thought and is so cliche (sp?)

Hmm, she's into fun? What kind of fun? Seasons pass to 6 Flags fun? A night out for dinner and dancing fun? A hot night club or cool bar, a babysitter all arranged, maybe a gift certificate to get something new to wear?

Is money NO object???? :lol Oh, how I love to spend other people's money! A surprise cruise next month? A one day for just the two of you, or a week with the kids, can you imagine?

my best friend is all about fun and she loves going to the spa.

Is there a cool place nearby that she'd like to go to? A really fun restaurant? (we have one that does Luau's and comedy nights. How about Karioke?)

Does she have a fun hobby? Snowboarding or something? A gift certificate or new goggles or ........

Does she enjoy going out for lunch? Or would she like a GC for someplace to go with your ds?

Oh, and you absolutely can't go wrong with a nice bottle of champagne, a box of really nice chocolates, a home made GC for a massage, (given by you :p ), a few pretty candles and the offer of............... :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
You guys are all alike. no, no, not that! the offer of a full nights sleep, one where you JOYFULLY jump out of bed and take care of all disturbances until noon the next day!

Breakfast served any way she likes it will probably win YOU just what you'd most like! A little book of coupons for those things...no really, we women love that stuff!

Oh, diamond earrings or a beautiful jewelry box is a good choice too.

What a good guy! I hope you get your wish for the holiday!

I love the art from Story People (http://www.storypeople.com) some of the writings on the art are so touching, I'm sure you could find one that fit your DW to a "T"!

well i'm crunchy and not the professional type and my personality lends iteslf to the fun, so i would LOVE an arranged couples date with at least one of our couple friends, but could be multiple other couples, and even single friends if you have some that like hanging out with the marrieds) with a sitter for at least our older kids, (baby can stay of course, and maybe all your kids are old enough to go to grandmas) where we all have dinner, nothing fancy and maybe some wine or beer (we and our friends drink, but of course you could omit that part) and a game, like apples to apples i hear is supposed to be a hit, but any game.

all of these details would be doable for us because we have family in the same town. if kids can't stay overnight away then grown-up game night is a bust. but this is what i would LOVE to see "waiting under the tree."

Is she a sewer or a crafter?

1) Gingher scissors - best in the market and they now come with cool designs on the blades and handles. I love good, elegant tools. Can be bought at a Fabric store like Joanne. Maybe not at Walmart, though.

2) Enough wool yarn to knit a sweater or afghan. Pick colors you know she likes and don't worry too much about getting the right kind. She'll know what to do with it and your local yarn shop will help you with quantities.

3) Good knives - along the lines of good tools.

4) Has she been wanting to get into something like leatherworking, woodcraft dyeing or spinning or something? A starter kit and good how-to book would be really nice.

HI.. the opening poster is my husband.. I read all the replies and there are some really good ideas.!!

I thought you might want to know what he got me.

Since we don't have much money, he made a hemp key chain for me because we just got a new car and i don't have my own set of keys.. we always shared.. now i have my own set with a hand crafted key chain.. He also got me ankle socks.. because i LOVE ankle socks.. and they are really cool colors too...

I bet this thread helped out some other hubbies too. :thumb
