View Full Version : Bumper sticker poll

OK, the last option was actually a joke, although I vaguely remember putting stickers on my parent's car that they lent me when I was in college.
I have a breastfeeding advocacy bumper sticker on my car. I always felt it was one of the more innocuous ones. Oops, that just reminded me of why I had 6 options at first--maybe you wouldn't put one on because you would be afraid someone might target your car somehow. That is my fear whenever I put any kind of bumper sticker on with a message, but I drove around with pink triangles and lavender lambdas on my car for a long time with no problems.
Oh well, I couldn't remember what my 6th option was so I cut it back to 5.
My sticker says Nurse a child Nurse a nation. I've always wondered how I would explain the meaning if someone asked me what it meant. I think of it as generally advocating breastfeeding with the idea of every person counts and it all starts on an individual basis, yada yada. I wouldn't feel comfortable at putting the one on my car that says Eat at Mom's and has a bottle in a circle with a slash through it because I'm afraid someone might take it personally if they had to use formula. But would they take it anymore personally than the one I have? I just got to thinking about breastfeeding advocacy in general. It is one of those issues that seems to be rather controversial which was something that took me by surprise when I first realized it. I remember after my daughter was born and I posted on an AOL birth month/year board, lots of moms had things in their signatures that specified if they breastfed or used cloth diapers. I didn't do that myself, for some reason, but I liked seeing them as an identification and camraderie thing. There was a backlash where other people would put that they were proud formula feeding, disposable diapering moms, so the other sigs must have pushed some buttons.
I think that people put bumper stickers on their cars for various reasons--they want to identify themselves as members of a group, they want to show support for something they like (band, football team, military unit and so on), or an idea they believe (religious, philosophical). They have specific opinions on politics that they want to get across. Or they want to put something humorous and/or insulting on their cars. I feel like a breastfeeding advocacy sticker is an identifier for me, but lately since I'm not even breastfeeding anymore I've been wanting to take it off. I'm thinking I'd rather have an AP advocacy sticker, or one for LLL or something like that.

i'd wear a t-shirt, or get shosh a onesie, or use a bag or backpack, or keychain.
you know what would be really cool?
CHECKS with pictures of nursing babies or some other bf advocacy design. i would buy those. think of how many people see your checks. of course, i'd have to stop using the check card and start using paper checks again, so maybe that isn't such a hot idea.
i voted for "they make the car look junky," can you tell?
what about a pro-bf sun shade for the windshield? that'd be cool.

I voted no b/c they make cars look takcy, however, if there was one of those clear window stickers like the tacky ones that ppl put across the top of the windsheild, I'd do that in a second if I liked the sticker.
The sticker would have to be tastful and forceful!

Yes! I already have one (Though I was very strongly in the "I will never put a sticker on my car because they make it look junky" camp) until I found one that said...
Affordable healthcare begins with breastfeeding.
available at... http://www.healthed.cc/
appropriate since I am always touting how unhealthy formula is and I am an RN and I am planning my Masters in lactation (when all my babies are a lot older)
I am NOT a bumper sticker person. I have been a car owner for 13 years and I have never had a bumper sticker.
That said, I would put a bumper sticker on my car advocating breastfeeding. Monica, thank you so much for posting where to get the "affordable healthcare" sticker!! I actually just quoted that one this week on a "memorable quote" thread on this forum, but I had no clue where to get one. Now I know.
Moderation in all things. One bumper sticker, well chosen, will not make my car look tacky (IMHO).

"Not a bumper sticker person?"
What do you think bumpers are FOR???? :D
I voted -already have one- but actually, I need a new one because I've switched cars.
 What's the point of having bumpers if not to carry your bumper stickers?

My car already is tacky and junky, prly needs one to hold it together :D
I haven't found one I like.
Portland is big on junky old cars that you can barely tell the paint from cuz they're covered in activist stickers :D
I always liked "Re-elect Gore in 2004" - because it rhymes and it's clever, not because I think he'll run or I'll vote for him, and then I'm thinking too much - but it's still clever.

I didn't vote, but I used to have a window cling. A LLL logo. Only people in the know would understand it fully. To most, it just looks like a mom holding her baby, which is a good message in itself, in our hands-off culture.
Thanks for the link lisamarie, I just ordered the "Peace on Earth begins with birth; support midwives" bumper sticker. It'll only be my second bumper sticker ever :D
I really like the LLL logo, wish I had one too.

I had one on a car that I no longer have, and people loved it. It read: "visualize using your turn signal". It was cool, because I am always complaining that people never use their turn signals...My hubby teases me bc I use mine going out of the driveway LOL.:thumb

Thanks for the links, I added them to my favorites. As a postpartum doula, I'm always on the look-out for thoughtful but inexpensive gifts for my clients.
I voted "not a bumper sticker person because it makes the car look tacky," although I'm re-thinking that. I would prefer the clear stick-ons, though. I bought my second brand new car (ever) in Sept, and am leary about "spoiling" it with stickers! I would have plastered my old car with them if it had occurred to me!
I'm seriously considering the "Peace on Earth Begins at Birth" because it sums up my philosophy so completely. Yeah, I guess one bumper sticker is in good taste...no offense to anyone who decorates the rear end of their car with bumper stickers!

I never was into bumper stickers until I had a reason to spread the word. And of course, that has to be bfing. Mine says " Bare your Breasts for babies- Breastfeed. It might get someones attention and make them think a little even if it sounds a little radical. I figure, Im so sick of seeing bottles everywhere, Why not be out there (ha) about the breast and its first purpose?!

I have the "Eat At Mom's" sticker w/ the crossed-out bottle...and wah, it's in my closet, because DH doesn't want that tacky bumper sticker crud on the car, even though he is quite the lactivist.
I have a few choice pins (also from Attachments) on my diaper bag...although they are so sutble compared to the HIDEOUS, NAVY AND YELLOW vomity Enfamil bags people carry around WILLINGLY.

I picked "if I found one I liked" because I would if I had a car. Any car I get isn't likely to be a super nice one, so I'll certainly put bumpers stickers on it. The older/junkier the car, the more bumper stickers it needs to make up for it. I had a $250 rustbucket and put a dozen bumper stickers on the back!
seriously, a bf bumpersticker would be a lkely pick even if I only put one or two on my next car.

It's funny that I just saw this thread. I put a bf bumper sticker on my car a few days ago. I am so not a bumper sticker person but have been so predjudiced against for nursing lately that I feel I have to advertise. It says "give only the best. www.breastfeeding.com". Ds3 has about five pro breastfeeding shirts/onesies. I have several tshirts and my other kids all have world walk shirts/dresses. Hey, you have to have a cause, right? I guess this is mine.:D

Where'd you find that one? My husband wants to take a picture of Hunter, our youngest, when he had milk all over his face and a satisfied grin, and put on it, "Got Boob?" We thought that would be to the point...

I have one of those "etched glass" stickers. It's a pair of boobs ( like a soft 'w' with little nipples...tee hee hee) and 'Got milk?" written in them. :)
I have gotten sooooooo many comments about it, Most people smile about it, or break their necks to see who's driving when they pass me. I had one really scary (think no teeth, smelling like smoke and beer - got out of a huge redneck truck...) guy get out of his car at a red light to ask me where I got it!! Dh tells me all of the time that people miss the point of it, but I don't care - I love my boob sticker!!

I have the "Affordable healthcare begins with BREASTFEEDING" one too. Saved my last one for a good 10 years for the day *I* had my license And a set of wheels. I put it on our old car, the one I use, the day after (it was raining that night or I'd've done it then) I got my driver's license.:)
Glad to see it's still available.:)
We got a :thumb from a PGH city cop when we had that one on our previous car.:)
DH is against bumperstickers, I was surprised when I got the one on our previous car without too much eyerolling.

I don't "do" bumper stickers either (well, I did have one years ago that said "Every Child a Wanted Child", but it was white with purple letters and my car was white, so it was tasteful :LOL ), but breastfeeding advocacy *checks*, now those I can be all over! Sorry, Anne Geddes, you're gettin' the boot! :D

I have one. I got it for free from motherwear, but I think LLL has the same slogan with a slightly different logo. It says BREASTFEEDING: Anytime your baby is hungry, Anywhere you are. I feel like it isn't hurtful to those who had to FF, and it advocates for public breastfeeding by pointing out the most important issue: the baby is HUNGRY.
I also have a Value ALL Families (with ALL in rainbow colors) sticker and a long thin rainbow on the spoiler above the hatchback on my subaru. I suppose it's redundant to put a rainbow sticker on a subaru, huh? Maybe they should just be included as original equipment, lol.
BTW, my 93 legacy looks junky enough that the bumper stickers kick up the tone a bit, LOL.
I've always been a sticker gal. I once got in a big fight with my dad about having a sticker that said "visualize armed revolution." IT'S A JOKE! This is when everyone had "visualize world peace" stickers in the 80's and it was the Reagan administration and people were really apathetic while terrible things were happening and while no, I wasn't really advocating violence, I felt like the irony was pretty appropriate. He was too out of it to get the whole joke though, and thought I was being irresponsible. Oh well. I did lose a tail light in a parking lot once, though, when I had it. Hasn't happened with the current stickers, but in my town my car is very mild compared to many.
