I feel like once I get to the actual homebirth, everything will be fine and I'm not too concerned. However, I feel like I should be doing more now regarding testing and stuff. I am 23 weeks.
I wonder if I should get a GD test because I know that the pee stick doesn't really tell you anything and you may or may not have symptoms and I don't feel like I have been eating as well as I should be, lots of sugary stuff and I'm overweight.
I decided not to have an ultrasound, but I am thinking now that I want one. I am afraid that the baby is all tangled up in his/her umbilical cord (because it's kind of clumped up at the top of my uterus--not vertical. I want to see and know that all his/her parts are there and working ok. EVEN all the while knowing that the u/s has possible risks and may have false positives on a ton of stuff.
I don't really want to talk to my midwife about this right now because I have been so proud of myself for being intervention free (coming off of 2 miscarriages and a very medical 1st birth.
How do I get through KNOWING everything will be ok, while knowing there are no guarantees?

And after youd o that, if it doesn't ease your mind, there is nothing that says you can't have testing done. If it will ease your mind, it's worth it. I Had an u/s at 25 weeks to ease my DH's mind. I didn't really want one, but, it put his mind at ease and now he's okay and that's what we needed.

Totally agree with Tara. If testing and u/s will ease your mind and offer you more confidence and peace going into your birth, then go for it. I had a homebirth, but still opted for the common tests. And I had several ultrasounds due to catching Fifths Disease from DS in my first trimester. Just make sure you to inform yourself of the pros and cons of each test.
And I would encourage you to talk to your midwife. Working through all your fears and concerns is CRUCIAL to a successful birth. I talked to my midwife about everything -- every question, every fear -- during my prenatal visits. When I was finally in labor, I was able to let go because I felt completely safe.

Talk to your midwife about your concerns. It's okay if you decide to get a test done you know what's right for you and your baby. Do what you feel you need to. That said trust your body and your baby. You are strong and you can do it. Surround yourself with positive people. Read Ina May she is inspiring.

As to the GD, I would say that if you are not eating well currently and the test shows pos for GD and it makes you eat better, then that's a good thing. But if it shows neg for GD so you don't change your habits, that's not so good a thing. So maybe you should sort of assume it'd be a positive and start eating like you have GD? Smaller, frequent portions, healthy snacks, no junk or sugar, cut out simple carbohydrates, eat more veggies and fruits, eat healthy fats like avocados and fish (wild salmon, yum!). All the stuff they tell you to do with GD.
These are very positive changes that you should do either way. Maybe if being a little 'scared' of GD would make you do this, then just assume you're positive and get started on the good diet, KWIM?

I too had all these fears. Finally, I had my 21 week (should have been 19) ultrasound and I felt the biggest weight off my shoulders. My baby was (so they say) .8kg! like 2lbs. She was sso beautiful and drinking water and kicking. ... It just made it alot easier. I spent month 3 crying and worrying hysterically because I don't have insurance and I wanted some reassurance.
So I say, if it makes you feel better, go for it. I feel much more at ease now.
Yo can do it Mama! :throb

I just wanted to add :hug
And tell you that the ultrasound may bring some peace that may benefit you.
I had a very detailed ultrasound done by a professor teaching a group of students at a sonography school...it was a whole hour and it showed every detail of my 21 week son...his mouth, his heart, his organs, his brain, his hand/feet....
I left there feeling so utterly relaxed, at peace and relieved.
It might do the same for you.
