I am Kelly's DH. She went into labor at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. We left our two daughters with our neighbor (our son was at school), and headed for the hospital. We didn't make it. I delivered my son on the side of the freeway (35E northbound just under the 494 overpass at 9:36 a.m.). We had a cell phone with us, and I used it to call for help before and after the birth. The paramedics got there about 5 minutes after he was born, and transported Kelly and son to hospital. Both are doing fine. Since it was about 10 degrees fareinheit, he needed to be warmed up a bit when he got to the hospital. He perked up quickly. He weighed in at 9lbs, 8ounces, and is 22.5 inches long. He did not require meds.
Here is my warning to the other DH's: After the kid was born and I wasn't sure what to do, I stood off to the side of the car and screemed several times. It helped: I stopped panicking and regained some coherency. Also, put at least one thick towel under the pregnant mom. Poops, blood and water can make a big mess on the seat, so putting a towel under her might help lessen the stain and the clean up.
Kelly should be home on Thursday afternoon. Our family is complete and my son will be home for Christmas.

Thanks
Kelly's DH

OMG! That's totally crazy! You two are great - that story makes me smile so much. You always hear about the "didn't make it to the hospital" stories, but wow!!! Great job, dad and mom! Welcome little baby!!!

kelly's DH and kelly, too --
OMG, what a tale you will have to tell... born on the hwy in the middle of a frozen minnesota winterwonderland. merry christmas indeed. i am so glad everything went fine! (the good thing about babies born that quickly is that they usually are more than ready and doing well!!!)

kelly -- you take the cake for birth story of the group so far!

ps -- editing to say that the towel for mess in the car comment makes kelly's "my baby has dropped" thread where she dreamt her water broke and the baby was born without a mess pretty darn hilarious in retrospect!

Way to go Kelly's DH! Wonderful job handling a crisis like that! Congrats to you and Kelly on the delivery and on the birth of your son.

I have to admit, you had me laughing when you said you had to scream a few times to get some coherency back. I totally pictured that. 'Crisis over. Time to panic. No wait. Not time to panic yet. Get a grip ...'

Thanks everyone. We are home. The second night in the hospital sucked, I missed my family so much. We stayed 2 days as no antibiotics were given for GBS+. I feel kind of overwhelmed now, but am glad I didn't have to deal with the hospital during labor and that daddy was the first to touch Samuel. Oh we finally named him Sameul Leido. He is so tiny to me! He is nursing great, but a little stuffy tonight. Here is his story:

Samuel Leido’s Birth

On the morning of Dec 20th I awoke after a great nights sleep disappointed to still be pregnant. I got Aric up and ready for school. Threw in some laundry, so I could have clean clothes to wear. I took Aric over to the bus stop, we took the car and after Aric got on the bus at 8, I sat in the car a few minutes to let it fully warm up and defrost the windows. I drove over to BK for a sausage and egg croissant. On the way I noticed what a beautiful sunny winter morning it was. There was even a small bit of halo around the sun that had only been up about 20 minut6es. When I got home I started the dryer again and sat down at the computer for a few minut6es. Richard went to sleep. I had felt a few mild contractions at BK but nothing different from what I had felt for the last few weeks. At the computer I felt a little more uncomfortable and went to the bathroom to see if that would help as it usually did. It didn’t and I began to wonder if this was it. I lay on the bed and had a couple more contractions and decided this was it. I called for Richard and no response. After about 5 minutes of Zoe and I trying to awaken him, he finally did. I stayed in the bathroom and Richard got the kids dressed and called the hospital and tried to find someone to meet us there to watch the girls. After 3 calls, no one could. I said to take them to our neighbor’s. Ella was excited to see Tyler, but Zoe started to cry and didn’t want to go. Jean finally came over to our place and brought two of her grand kids with her. Richard got things in the car and we took off, after sending him in for a bucket incase I got sick. I really felt like we would get to the hospital and have an hour or so of labor at this point. By the time we got to Pilot Knob approaching Cliff (about 3 miles from home), I started feeling pushy and said so. My water broke by the gardens on Cliff only about two contractions later. I had forgotten to put the under pad on the seat when I got in the car. I thought about stopping at the park and ride at Cliff and 35E but couldn’t communicate this to Richard and he got on the freeway. I only had about 4 more contractions and pushing and felt the baby coming. The feeling of his head moving down was so consuming. I managed to say pull over. Richard did at 494 overpass. He had called 911 as he did so. He came around to my side and helped me get my Capri’s and undies down only to find the baby crowning. One more push and the baby was born. Richard said he untangled the baby from his cord and put him on my tummy. The mess and baby were steaming in the cold. Richard covered him with a towel. Richard asked what time it was, 9:36 a.m. I rubbed him a bit and he cried a bit, but was still blue and his hair was covered with meconium. I asked Richard for the bulb and suctioned him out a couple of times. Richard called 911 again and shortly a trooper then ambulance showed to. The paramedics cut the cord and took the baby to the ambulance. They had Richard move the car away from the snow bank so they could get me out. One paramedic tried to cover me as I got out, but I am sure if a passing car looked, they got a show! By the time I was put in the ambulance, the baby was in clean blankets, heating pads, getting O2 and much pinker. I asked for him and after they started an IV and checked my blood sugar (their protocol -140 no I am not GD) they gave him to me and encouraged me to breastfeed him. He wasn’t interested and only mouthed it. My placenta delivered about then. I was given an O2 mask for the baby and he pinked up more. Richard followed us in the car and we took off for the hospital. At the hospital we were taken up to L & D. The baby was taken from me and given a quick check; his temp was 96, as I moved from stretcher to table. I was given a chance to get out of my soiled shirt and given a gown and the baby was given to me for skin-to-skin contact. A doctor came in and I was found to have a 2nd degree tear. My own doctor shortly arrived and did the repair. During this the baby started nursing an hour after he was born and nursed for about 30 minutes. My doctor examined him and said he was perfect. He weighed 9lb 8 oz, 22.5 in long with a 15” head. He seems so small to me.
