i'm about to check the archives but need an answer asap--my baby girl is three and one-half months and is teething--unusual i know but i can see the bumps and my son also teethed early.

she is really freaking out and screaming from pain tonight...keeps shoving her hanfs in mouth but can't suck her fingers/thumb very well...she's breastfed only and no pacifiers but boy tonight i am considering one (tho i'm radically against them!)

she acts like she is hurting too much to nurse unless she is almost asleep...and she stays latched on and i can't get up when she does go to sleep. then she wakes up soon and is only happy for a few minutes until the pain begins in earnest again.

other symptoms are clear runny nose and swollen gums. we've tried teething rings and frozen washcloth...also rescue remedy.
i don't have teething aids on hand.

can i give her advil for children? if so how much? i'm normally against that unless in emergency but i'm really concerned at ther level of pain.

ideas?

Hi! According to the Dr. Sears book the dosage for acetaminophen (don't know if that's what Advil is) goes by weight; 6-11lbs get 40-80mg (1/2 - 1 dropperful), 12-17lbs 1- 1 1/2 dropperful. Sorry if this isn't much help! I usually don't like to give ds acetaminophen, but when he's teething that's what helps him sleep.

I use Hylands Teething Tablets during the day. It helps calm him down and ease the pain. At night, although gosh, I hate to admit it, I really do, but I use Infant Tylenol for him. It is the only thing that works or else he nurses every 20 minutes from 8pm to 8am and I am not exaggerating!!!
One thing I have tried to do as well is...I give him the Hyland's tab and nurse him off to sleep and don't give him Tylenol right away unless I notice he is waking freq. and really needs it. If you do choose to do this, just make sure you get the dosage ready before you go to bed, because let me tell you, it is tough to do when you are half awake. The tube gets air bubbles in it and it takes forever to get the liquid dose just right!!!
Another idea of course is to brew some chamomile tea and give it to the baby ...if you are interested, you can email me and I can get you the exact dosage which I think is like a tablespoon or so OR easier than that, just drink about 3 cups of chamomile tea throughout the day.
And in case you are hyper neurotic like myself, the Hyland teething tabs really do instantly dissolve in their mouth and there is no worry about choking. hahahahahaha.

the magic combination for us is 2 hyland's teething tabs and a drop of rescue remedy for distress. i was worried about the lactose base at first, and worried about effectiveness because i've never used homeopathic remedies before, but it works! it works! it works!
