I got a scary call from the nurse at the doc's office where I am trying to get in to see. It is the only place that will take my insurance without being on an HMO(I would loose my wonderful councelor if I go HMO).

She said," I just wanted to let you know if you go on meds you will probably have to stop nursing."

WHAT????!!!!

I said,"that's not a true statement."

silence...

ME,"I know of at least 4 meds that I took before that my doc okay'ed for breastfeeding, and are concidered safe by breastfeeding experts"

HER,"which ones?"

ME,"zoloft, paxil, effexor, and prozac."

HER,"well you must have refused to stop breastfeeding, so they said it was okay."

WHAT???!!!

So needless to say I'm a bit worried about going there. It is my only option other than trying to find a family doc to prescribe to me.
I would like to have some websites, and/or books to take with me to educate them(and so I know what I'm given is safe). It really bothers me that they really know NOTHING about nursing/meds, and probably make nursing moms with ppd stop nursing!!

TIA~Debi

Here's a start:

http://www.kellymom.com/meds/antidepressants-hale10-02.html

Also, the doc should look up the medicine in Dr. Thomas Hale's book, Medications and Mother's Milk: A Manual of Lactational Pharmacology. The PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) is useless for determining compatibility of a drug with nursing; it's basically the inserts that the drug companies publish, and for liability reasons they all say that nothing's safe.

Good Lord:angry

Stand up for your right to BF while on meds. Take those links with you and be assertive!

I'm sorry you have to fight that!

I want to thank you for the links and support. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do(if I'm getting on meds or not). The nurse now want the opinion of our ped.(we don't have one), a lot of peds know nothing about nursing to begin with.
Grrrr....

May I suggest contacting a lactation consultant? My very good friend is a LC, and she routinely fields such calls, and contacts the doctors directly when there is misinformation going on. She often works with docs to find the best med for the mom's condition while maintaining a good breastfeeding relationship.

Hope that helps!

I went to see a phychiatrist last week and he was well aware of the bfing and meds info. My fam dr had put me on Paxil, but I needed a change. New dr is trying Zoloft, first. Can you try a pdoc instead? Let us know how it all went!
