View Full Version : Instructions on post formatting controls?

I just love the tools that can be used in MDC for posts! But there are a few I don't understand. Is there a place in the forum to read about them, or are there some simple answers to these questions?
1) What is the difference between the Guided Mode and the Enhanced Mode?
2) What do you do with the little yellow icon that seems to have something to do with images - you click on it and it provides this code:
Enter the text to be formatted
xxx
3) There's a little pound or number sign. When you click on it, it gives you this code: - what is that for?
4) The carats that are like those normally used for html - are these for using instead of using the other icons when you just want to type in your own html? Or what?
xxx
5) The PHP icon - is there a simple explanation of how this can be used? I know PHP is a programming language, but is it something you can insert into posts here?
xxx
6) And the quotes icon on the end - I guess this is for using when you want to do a quote when not using the quote button beneath posts?
xxx
7) OH! And this is a separate question - is there a way to turn a sig line off and on? So you can use it in just one section?
Lots of questions, I know.... :D Would appreciate any input. Thanks! - Lillian

I will answer what I can. Hopefully the mods will weigh in on the rest. :)
2) What do you do with the little yellow icon that seems to have something to do with images - you click on it and it provides this code:
We aren't allowed to post images here. They can only be linked.
Enter the text to be formatted
xxx

I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but we can't use html here. If you want to post a link it has to go between the brackets in . Not sure if this helped or not. :o
6) And the quotes icon on the end - I guess this is for using when you want to do a quote when not using the quote button beneath posts?
Yes
7) OH! And this is a separate question - is there a way to turn a sig line off and on? So you can use it in just one section?
Yes. If you look below the posting box when you're posting/replying, you'll see "Additional Option." Turning off your sig is the first option.

THANK YOU!

That's what I asking about - how is that done? :) Here's the code for an image on my website, for instance - and I'm wondering what part of this I would put in and what I'd have to add to it to make the link. I assume I'd have to stick the url to my site somewhere too:
<div ><p><img src="images/parkday.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="152" border="0"></p></div>

That's what I thought - until I saw the carats up above the posting box and the [HTML]xxx[HTML] that showed up when I clicked on it. I can't figure out what it's for if not for putting html in :scratch

Wonderful! Gonna' try that right now! :) Thanks again! Lillian

Hmmm...:scratch That looks like a code rather than a url. I don't know what pic you're trying to link to, but try right clicking>Properties>URL. Copy and paste the url into your sig. Are the photos hosted somewhere?

You would have to upload your pics online somewhere like photobucket and give the link to that.

Yes - that's just the code related to the photo image on my website - what I was wondering was what I was supposed to do with it in relation to the url - but apparently the feature doesn't work for ordinary sites. Thanks! ;) Lillian

Thanks - I guess I'll have to Google photobucket and see what that is. I assumed you could link to images in any kind of site, but I guess not. ;) Lillian

I use picturetrail.com You can get a free, trial account there but it is highly worth it, imo, to pay the $20 a year for the premier account. Once you've hosted your pictures you can share them here. :)

I wonder if this is the same as the picture sharing service I've used - Shutterfly. It's free - because they hope you'll buy prints from them. Actually, they have sold some pictures to people I've sent to their site. - Lillian

You can actually pull out the part that will be a part of a link and use that. In this case, you'd put http://www.thesiteurlhere.com/images/parkday.jpg
Or, if you don't want to put the site url in the body of your post or sig, you could use BB code to change it to a linked word, like you did in your sig. :)

Yep! Very similar. Just find a service (free hopefully!) and upload your pics there. :)

Ohmygosh! :lol I was all excited about using that image thingie, and when I went to do it in a post - not here but in another area of the forum - the icon wasn't there with the rest. I see it here as I'm writing this - but have checked and rechecked to find it in the homeschooling area to no avail. Anybody know how that works? I could have sworn I saw it used somewhere other than here - someone posted her daughter's picture, as I remember... No? - Lillian

Do you mean you are trying to post the picture in the body of your post? MDC doesn't allow that so that function (what the image icon does) is disabled on the boards. You can post the link to the pic in your post, though. :)

Yes - I was going to post a link to a picture like I'd done earlier in this thread after getting instructions, but the little photo icon (the little yellow square with the mountain and dot for a sun) is not there above the posting boxes in other areas of the forum. So you're saying I could just put in a link without using the icon to do it? Hm... Going to to try that... :D Lillian
EDITED TO ADD: I went and tried it - it worked! Thanks! :)
