View Full Version : Twin VBAC, anyone?

A good friend of mine is 16 weeks. She just found out that she is having twins. Her first birth (Halloween 1998) was a planned natural birth in a hospital. It ended up being a c-section due to the OB's insistence on inducing to conform to his schedule and other interventions. She is still pretty traumatized by that birth and wants to avoid a repeat c-section if possible.

Before she found out she was having twins, she had planned a homebirth with a wonderful midwife that delivered my Lily. After finding out that there are two babies, the mw does not feel comfortable with attending the birth.

In these parts, (under an OB) twins will pretty much guarantee that she's getting a c-section. Add that to a previous c-section and the cards are just not stacked in her favor.

She truly believes in the power of her body and that she is capable of doing this. She is terrified of the possibility of another c-section, but is willing to do it IF IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. She doesn't want to be cut open again just because a doctor is impatient.

Have any of you had a successful VBAC with twins? Any stories or advice that I should pass on to her? I believe in her and I know that she can do it, its just a matter of finding a HCP that has faith in her. I can't imagine how nervous she must be right now, not knowing if she will be able to avoid the same outcome as she had last time.

Thanks!

I sure wish someone had answered you! A very interesting question, indeed.

Me too. My friend could still use the advice.

Well I'm not pregnancy with twins, but I am planning a VBAC. :) I have seen a few things in my research about VBAC. It seems, from the few things I have come across, that it's just as safe as any other VBAC, but not done as often, so there isn't as much data on it.

Here are a few links where twin VBAC is mentioned:

Here are some great VBAC sources. I'm sure if you poke around you'll find info on twin VBAC:

Good Luck to your friend!

There's a great thread in Homebirth titled "Twins at Home?." It would be worth taking a look--several moms with big, healthy babies and vaginal births, some at home, some not.
