View Full Version : Fighting the Nesting Urge ??

I've been having major urges to buy clothes lately. I know I should wait until after the shower to reevaluate what we really need, but it is a pretty strong desire! I am trying to deal with it by buying only items that are on a really good sale and diverting the nesting to other things that need to be done, but has anyone else experienced this, and what do you do about it?

I'm buying cloth diapers like they're going out of style. :lol I'm trying to at least buy EUC, and wait until I have money in my PayPal account--but sometimes I feel I'm addicted! This is particularly problematic since dh isn't totally on board w/ cloth yet and we're not sure we'll realistically be able to do it at first, given that we don't have a washer/dryer. So I guess this is just commiseration, rather than advice!
I will say this: except, we're trying very hard only to buy things that are truly special. We have gotten a few things--a couple of onesies; a handpainted fairies and elves thing to hang on the wall; a super-soft, handmade stuffed sheep. We're trying to limit our purchases to things that are special and out of the ordinary--things that, if we don't get them when we see them, we probably won't find again. I feel okay about getting a few unique things--it seems different to me than going into Babies R Us and buying a lot of mass-produced stuff.

I totally know how you feel about buying clothes! i've already bought a TON of clothes for this little guy :innocent
Since dd is only two, we have all the baby gear we need (for the most part) and it is still in good/new condition. so i can resist that pretty easily.
however, probably because the baby is a different gender, i keep buying clothes! this is a great time of year to buy clearance items for next winter, so hopefully i'm guesstimating the correct size, otherwise we are going to have a whole lot of un-used/underused clothes.
my mom still keeps talking about a baby shower though...i've told her i don't think i need one, but she mentions it about once a month or so. if we do have one, then that will be even more clothes, since the things i do need/want are not found at babyRus
good luck with resisting the urge!

I think I just need to stay away from baby clothing stores, or at least the areas of stores that sell the clothes - they are just TOO cute, and hard to resist! I, too, have been guesstimating the sizes on the cooler weather items, I suspect that our baby will be fairly large, or at least grow fairly quickly based on family genetics.
When we went to the store this weekend, DH told me we need to leave the store, because he could feel the manipulation too strongly!! Amazing.

hmmm... i always think of nesting more as the cleaning/purging/organizing drive which is in fairly full gear for me. we've got a list of projects mapped out from now until may- little and big things around the house: creating closet organization systems, new curtains in the livingroom, painting the dresser/changing table. I think in about April i'll be really psyched to set up the baby's spot and dig out all our gender neutral clothes from dd that we saved. we have 0 money right now for extras, so i'm not going in any stores except the grocery. but i am modeling for an art class every few weeks and have ear marked that as baby money. mostly right now i'm browsing nice diaper bags, slings and wraps and considering buying a Britax infant car seat (prob. off ebay). i pretty much bought no clothes for dd when i was preg. with her- all were gifts. not sure if we're having a shower either.

I'm definitely more of an organizational freak when I'm pregnant than a buyer. Our kitchen remodel is almost done and it's been a real struggle to not clean out closets and do things like put down shelf paper! We have to clear out our entire second floor in prep for the next remodel (next year! I'm done for one year!) but I am so excited about that I sometimes sneak up and mentally throw things away! Before kids I was pretty lax about these things and dh is so much happier with me now! :lol
As for buying things, I did make a massive Target run at about 7 mos last time, but I only bought super practical things. I bought onesie t-shirts, cloth diapers (the spit up kind), socks, all the things I'd need for a changing table, and receiving blankets. I also bought things for the birth, like a balance ball and tennis balls (for rubbing on my back, but we didn't use any of those things. My main motivation was being ready for an early birth and having the bare neccesities just in case. No one likes to buy you those things for a shower anyway, so I wasn't worried about duplicates. Actually, I did get some of those burp diapers but you can never have too many of those.
I will confess that now that I know that I'm having a girl I'm enamored with the idea of matching and coordinating outfits. I'm SO NOT the type to do that, and I've resisted buying anything, but even dd, who is only 2, pointed out a dress that would fit her that was just like a baby dress that I was admiring in a store. SHE would probably LOVE to match the baby. I never had a sister close in age so all of this is completely new and foreign to me. I'm sure I'll cave soon, and justify it by saying it will look cute in pictures. :D

I totally hear you on the nesting. It happens to me every time though so I am not surprised. My diapers and clothes usually get washed folded and organized at least 4 times before birth. I am resisting the urge to start that now. But I have made all my newborn fitted diapers and have started on the small and med sizes. And cleaning out the closets like crazy! I also got my birth kit today. I also want to buy the car seat as we need a new one trying to hold out for a sale or a good garage sale kind of hard though they are so cute. No clothes shopping for me though unless it is gender neut as the cord was in front of the goods at our ultrasound.

Oh my god do I know the nesting feeling!
Reasons why I think I'm nesting:
Reason 1: I feel the compelling urge to get the nursery set up. I still have 18 weeks left mind you, but I feel like I NEED IT DONE YESTERDAY. We're going to be setting it up sometime the end of March/ beginning of April so that I can hopefully help before I get too big to see the ground. Speaking of which, I am now 115lbs which makes my total weight gain 3lbs. About 1lb is the baby. No complaints here!
Reason 2: I actually know how many diapers come in the huggies newborn package (40 in case you wanted to know.) I know this because I am stuck staring at diapers whenever we go into any supermarket/drug store. I've been a good girl and haven't bought a package yet, but I always feel like I need to look down that aisle to I guess make sure they still make newborn diapers.
Reason 3: I also have the thought that I HAVE TO buy baby clothes. I know I have lots of time. I'm pretty sure my relatives won't let the little one be naked. I have gift certificates to babygap and babies r us, but I'm forcing myself to wait until tax free week. At least then I have an excuse.
Reason 4: I actually worry that if I don't buy clothes soon the spring season will end before I have an adequete amount for little one. This has been waking me up in the middle of the night. Not the heartburn, but the fear that the spring season will end... I realize that there are probably always spring-like clothes out there, but try explaining that to the hormones. These are the same hormones that are telling me that I must get scratch mittens, tiny socks, little t-shirts so I don't hurt little umbilical cord stumpy, and, occasionally, that I need to learn how to knit, crochet, or sew...
Oh, and lets not forget Reason 5: The clothes I do have I'm fighting the urge to wash. I don't want to go down that road yet, because I'm worried if I wash them once I'm going to feel like I have to wash them every week. I will allow myself to wash them before I put them away in the nursery and then, hopefully, I will only wash them once again before the baby make his/her entrance.
We should make a "You know you're nesting when..." list!
