I'm just getting started here on MDC, but was wondering how many other people are here from the Houston area. I'm in Sugar Land, myself, and noticed a few older threads with people from around here... Would love to get to know other local moms!

Hi!
We are in the Meyerland area as well.
I am new to Mothering.com, but I do attend the Bellaire/West U LLL meetings as well as the Central Houston API group.
Gabriel is 9.5 Months old and I work part-time (typically in the afternoons - depending on naps...)
Playdates anyone?

Another Gabriel? Mine will be 1 on Tuesday! I'm having a hard time believing it's been that long! :)

At the risk of sounding stupid, can you please enlighten me on API groups? I'm not familiar with exactly what they are or how they work.

Thanks!

Another (newbie) checking in here.

We've in the Meyerland/Westbury area. My DD is two and my DS is 1 month. We hadn't intented them to be almost *exactly* two years apart. LOL!

Playdate? My daughter really needs some interaction with some children her age. The yahoo/playgroup we're part of isn't very active and most are now a lot younger or a lot older than her. :\

Hi, mahdohkt: we're in Missouri City in Ft. Bend County, just on its southeastern edge. The area in which we live is great - it's quiet, the homes are on an acre of land each, and the commute to Houston (med center area, in the south) is just over 30 minutes. Our neighborhood is about 55% white, 35% black and 10% Indian/subcontinental. The homes are definitely affordable, even with the size of the property and the fact that they back up onto a lake (and most have docks and the like). Dunno what your price range is, but there's at least one of the older homes for sale now that will probably go for about $160K ($160K translates into a pretty cheap mortgage these days - get 'em while they're hot). Like the others, it's on a landscaped acre of land, and has a dock in the back. Everyone has a kayak or other boat, and fish and the like. It's a very friendly neighborhood. We've liked it, and it would be fabulous to have another Mothering family around!!! :D

If you're looking for a more traditional subdivision-y type of home, then Quail Valley in Missouri City and Teal Run in Fresno/Arcola are pretty good. Teal Run (I think that's the name of the subdivision - it's Teal something) is newer than Quail Valley, but Quail Valley is better situated. Teal Run has a good ethnic mix (ie, it's heterogeneous). I think that's true of Quail Valley, too, but am not certain. The prices of these homes will be less expensive than where we are (the lots are smaller and so forth).

edited to add: oh, but property taxes in this area are pretty steep - gotta keep that in mind. I think that'll be the case in both Ft. Bend and Alief.

We're practically neighbors. I don't belong to the Mom's club, yet. They sent me information about it, but I haven't gotten around to pursuing it further. We just relocated here in February and life has been crazy since. But I think we are *finally* settled. Do you belong to the Mom's Club? I don't know anyone who is a member so any inside info would be great.

Where did you relocate from?
We have been here 3 years and love it.
We are from Ohio, SC, NY and Now TExas

As for Mom's club.
No I haven't sent in my paperwork yet.
My friend in LLL (Melia) is the VP and she loves it, also my next door neighbor is a member.
I have been kinda busy lately, and just haven't taken the time to send my paperwork in.
Also with having 2 kids I worry that I may end up in a playgroup suited for one and not the other.
I don't want one to feel left out.
Also I worry that I may have to host it and the other moms may not like that I have a few rules when playing in my home.
I'm not strict but I kids have to keep drinks in the kitchen ya know stuff like that.
I also am shy about new things. I much rather type away on my computer.

I'd love to do a picinic. Kinder lets out at 11:00 so that is a great time

How does next week sound? Wednesday, Thursday or Friday? around 1:00. We could either do Memorial park or The Woodlands.

Also, on a different note, is anyone heard of Motherhood Center? It's a facility devoted to supporting & pampering all Mothers. They are having a Grand Opening on Sep. 24 from 4 to 8 w/ a silent auction benefitting the community Doula Program. They offer programs like Infant CPR, Breastfeeding, Self Defense, Parenting & Sign Lang. classes. If you want more information contact them at 713-963-8880 or www.motherhoodcenter.com.

Hi There :)
I'm Janna, I have one little boy, Oliver, who will be 4 in December, and a new babe on the way, due in Feb.
We're in SoCal right now, but will be moving to Spring the week of the 5th of October. We're looking at a house in the Spring Trails subdivision, which we're hoping to be able to move into that week.
I'd love to meet up with some other Mums in the area.
Blessings,
Janna
PS. If anyone has used the Nativiti birthing center and can offer their opinions, I'd really appreciate it...via PM or email :) Thanks!

Janna~used Nativite and LOVED it:hug I have nothing but good things
to say about them! They moved up to THe Woodlands area about a
year ago and haven't been to that location. I also used one of the
midwives that is no longer there.(she was wonderful) I now use Melanie for my gyn. checkups and she is great too. I don't know the other midwife
that is there.
Let me know if you need to know anything about the Houston area.
I've lived here most of my 34 years (mostly the Spring area)!

Look forward to another MDC mamma being here:hug

I've been a little out of the loop but I'm game for the 22nd at Memorial Park. I could try to make it this week but DH will probably be home most of this week. And DD loves her Daddy so it's hard to take her out when he's around the house. The whole time she'll be asking me "where's Daddy".

I also know of a great little park in Bellaire near 59 and Buffalo Speedway (i.e. near the Compac Center or whatever  they are calling it now... it's the Summit darn it!!! :LOL) It's a really nice small park with lots of climbing stuff, swings and LOTS of toys. It's in a quiet neighborhood and people leave a bunch of the toys there to play with. It's nice and shady too. Just a possibility for another time. :)

Anyways, I'm planning on being at Memorial next Wed. :)

I think a 6month old would have some fun watching the older kids!

I was thinking we would meet at Memorial Park. If your coming from up north go south on 45, west on I-10 exit Washington and turn left. take your first right (in the key map the street is named Entrance). You'll see baseball fields located on your left, than take a left on E. Memorial Loop Dr. You will see the enterance of the Golf Club on your right and than a pretty fountain w/ some benches. I'll meet you between the enterance and the fountains. My name is Traci, I'm 31, w/ long brown hair and I'm about 5 feet 6inches and I'll be chasing a 14 month old little boy w/ curls!

Sorry we missed everybody. We had to go to Dallas for DH and we were suppose to be back on Tuesday. Well DH had to reschedule a meeting for Wednesday afternoon so we didn't get back in town until much later in the week. And then our @*#$&@ cable modem is STILL having *issues*. I'm really starting to hate Warner Cable. They've been out here at least 8 times in the last year for problems. "It's the splitter" everytime. Please! Finally we got someone with some actual knowledge of his job and he determined that our interior cable line is bad and they are re-wiring the house. It's about darn time.

I'm up for where ever the next gathering is. I don't care if I have to drive across the city. My DD needs some activity. :)

I live in the West Houston area in Bear Creek..I have a four year old and a 2 mo old. My 4yo is in Montessori most of the day and my 2 mo can't really play, but I would love to come to the next play date to meet some local like minded moms...mind if I tag along?

I so need a play group outting. MY kids just got over that nasty flu that's going around. My 18 mo old decided this was good time to wean as well. :( So I had NO way to really comfort him. Just held my whinning "not a baby anymore" son for 2 weeks.

Anyone have any ideas for Trick or Treat? My boys are almost 4 and 18 mos. Not real sure where to take them. We usually go to OK to Trick or Treat at MILS but Corbie is in school this year so no dice.

We're working on getting an inner-loop-ish playgroup off the ground. Email me for more info.

I swear there is another thread going on this.

As my user name suggests, I'm in Katy. I have a daughter - age 8 today!!!! and a son - age 2. I also have a lazy, no-bug-catchin, all looks cat. I know there is a Yahoo Group for cloth diapering moms in this area, I believe it's called houstoncloth. To join just apply and give the moderator your MDC user name.

Nice Meetin' Ya'll

Yes, we seem to have resurrected the really, REALLY old Houston thread. :) The newer one must be floating around here, somewhere...
