I'm not sure. My little guy arrived peacefully in the water just 8 days ago. While sitting on the birth stool awaiting the placenta's arrival, my midwife looked for tears. She saw none. WHen the placenta arrived, she looked again, just to be sure, saw nothing. She didn't "dig around" or anything though, she just kind of looked. I didn't tear the last two times, this one was a waterbirth so I figured I had even less chance of tearing. This baby did have the biggest head though (14.5"!!) So tonight I"m in the tub and I get the urge to feel around. I feel a "something". It's on my perineum and it feels like some kind of raised wide line. I get out, get a mirror and flashlight and find this moon-shaped "something". I've never torn, I had skid marks with one baby, it looks similar. Its obviously something, open skin looking. It doesn't burn (any more than anything else) when I pee or wipe. I just had a stomache flu, complete with diarhea (sorry for TMI) and don't know if its related to that or if its some tear. IF its a tear, its small. It's not noticable if you don't spread the skin apart which is why my MW wouldn't have seen it. She's coming tomorrow to check on the baby, should I ask her about it? I Mean, it's been 8 days and there's nothing to do about it now, right? (wow, I can't beleive it's been 8 days already!!)

I'd ask her to take a look for your own peace of mind.

Yep, that is what I would do. It was probably so small as went unnoticed, but have her check it out...I shouldn't think stitches were needed, but could be a tear in the underlying musculature....

Thanks! If sh's not needing to run off really fast, I'll have her take a look. She not coming to see me, she's coming to see my baby actually, so I don't know how long she planned to hang out. I'll at least mentin it, whether she looks or not.

Tara, I just had a waterbirth with my twins 3 weeks ago and I got a 2nd degree tear because Jazmin came out with her hand on her head. It was not really the kind of tear that could be stitched so I just kept my legs together and tried some natural remedies like seaweed and comfry, etc. Nothing seemed to really make a difference until I started taking salt water baths. I got those huge cartons of Epsom salt and dumped in at least 2 or 3 cups in my bath water. I took at least one bath a day and it helped sooooo much! Not only was it soothing but it sped up the healing like nothing else. I am still taking salt water baths even though I think I am healed because they feel so good. I also think they helped my hemmoroids heal quickly as well.

I saw my midwife yesterday. I told her about it. She ddn't look, which was okay. She said that what I described sounded like a skin tag that tore. It can't be stitched anyway, so the only thing I can do with it is keep it clean. She said my perineum was intact when she checked, but re-iterated that she just gave it a couple of quick looks because it looked good. I tink that if it tore, it happened after the birth, like in the next day or so and that's why it sent unnoticed (maybe?) Im sure it can happen. Either way, it's still there and she's not worried and neither am I. Thanks for the replies ladies!!

Just an fyi - my mw didn't notice the tear I had on my labia after my last birth. I brought it up at my 6 week pp visit. So I think it's w/in the realm of possibility that she just missed it, although it doesn't sound like something to be concerned about.
