Hi all,
I'm in the middle of losing my third pregnancy. This was a much planned and wanted babe and we are devastated and really want to start trying again asap.
My dr said that I would need to wait for 2 full cycles again before trying, when I asked why, she replied that it was so I would know what my cycles were like before trying...huh?!? She really wouldn't clarify any further.
So, does anyone know?? What's the danger, if any, of getting pregnant right away after a mc? What did your dr/midwife say about it? And why???
Thanks very much.
Maybe someone else will have more concrete information, but it seems to me like it's one of those things where the reasons vary according to your circumstances. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that since there is blood loss, waiting a month or two lets you get your iron levels and nutrient stores back up. Also, waiting gives you some time to grieve and adjust to the loss of your pregnancy.
I do know that a lot of women do become pregnant relatively soon after their miscarriages, some intentionally and some not... I have never heard of this being a problem for the mamas or babies. But of course your doc is going to err on the side of caution when advising you. Perhaps if you ask her more specific questions about your health... are you anemic? That *would* be a good reason to wait a couple months... she can tell you what you need to know to make a good choice for youself and the next babe.

I have read varying advice, some based on how far along you were and any medical complications. I would bet the doc's advice is more based on having a normal period cycle so they can "date" your pregnancy and decide when you're "overdue." Maybe to make sure you have normalized hormone levels. So if that's nothing that bothers you, TTC based on how you feel, physically and mentally.

I am also in the process of miscarrying, so I know how you feel! After my m/c in August, my midwife recommended waiting 3 cycles before ttc. We did that and got pg right away. Now we're losing that baby as well. I went to an OB two days ago and she said there is no medical reason for waiting. She told me there are many patients she has seen that got pg immediately after a mc and had no problems. Personally, having just gone through this 5 months ago, I feel emotionally drained. We will probably wait 6 months or more before ttc. I don't know...I'm soooo hormonal right now!:crying
Good luck to you!

I have wondered the same thing and it looks like the x months wait is mostly because of dating purposes, and for the emotional healing. I will heal just fine when pregnant thank you LOL.
So for me, I have decided not to wait, to just go for it immediately. I have read too many stories of people getting pregnant right after m/c and being just fine to not hope for the same.
Other people feel more comfortable waiting. I think it is mostly a personal choice. I haven't found medical reasons to wait.

My ob said this to me when I lost my first (at age 29); if you were in your twenties, I'd tell you to wait a year....if you were in your mid-thirties, I'd tell you not to wait at all...you're on the cusp of losting fertility, you can wait about 3 months and then start again....she also said that the wait has more to do with emotional healing than anything else. I love her.
edited to add; Boy, I hope that was clear. The "you're on the cusp of losing fertility" part was what she said to me, not something I was saying to you. Just in case....I'd hate to have you think I was telling you something like that.
Oh, and ds was conceived one month after my last m/c, immediately after the dreaded HSG test.

There is no medical reason why you cannot start trying to conceive right away. I think your own emotional state is up for you to decide -- for me, after my miscarriages, it would have driven me crazy to wait to start TTC.
