I am moving to Wurzburg in a couple of weeks and just wanted to know if anyone has any... I don't know... advice? tips? experience?
Husband is military, and he got stationed there. It appears we will be living on post, though we would prefer to live on the economy - we're on a time table and post housing has appeared faster.
Was also hoping to meet someone...
we homeschool currently, am thinking of enrolling the kids in school there, though. We'll see once I get a feel for it.
I know no German (though trying my best to learn something by then!), we are AP, though not 100%... we stick to the "choose what works best for your family" philosophy and parent intuitively - sometimes that includes AP styles, sometimes not... but I respect and support all mamas and the choices they make. My children are 5 and 7.
I am starting to get really nervous about moving to a foreign country where we don't know the language, so searching for any shred of support I can! :)

I have family that got back about a year ago after 5 years at Spangdelhm (sp?) THEY LOVED IT, but were also bit hesitant to go. Now they can't wait to go back. They new no German, but had a great experience with the Air Force. I now have cousins with the Army in Heildeberg and they love it. And my husband and his family are from Berlin.
Just think, if you homeschool...the possibilities are endless. Your kids will get to SEE history, something only few Americans achieve. And Bavaria is absolutely gorgeous. You can do this, and your family will be better for it.
Just be glad the military is movin you! My husband came from Berlin to the states with just two suitcases because he couldn't afford the shipping costs.
Also, the military has fabulous excursions that are great for weekend trips. I did the overnight trip to Amsterdam and throroghly enjoyed it.
I'm so jealous, I keep begging my DH to move us to Germany, but he's determined to stay in the states. :lol

I thought they were closing most of wurzburg? I know they have a REALLY nice PX which is always a plus. I think the schools are closing there also...ill have to go look at this thread from another site I go to. I know there is a good amount to do in that area.

Hi Kristi,
I just moved to Schweinfurt and realized we are pretty close. I am like you, mostly AP but more what works for our family. I admit I am nervous about being on a military post (this is my first one) I would love to talk more with you sometime.

I know that as of June you can no longer give birth there but don't know about anything else. I am always on the hunt for info on what is closing over here though.

My mom works at one of the schools there. It is BEAUTIFUL. All the vinyards, the residence, the festung, you are going to love it. My mom lives on the economy, not on base. She isn't big on the homeschooling community there but that is because she sees a lot of abuse/neglect (so sad) and her school is awesome (middle school). I don't know anything about the elementary school there though.
I grew up in Nurnberg and it was awesome, your kids are going to LOOOOOVE it!
Have fun and let me know if you have questions.

Thank you for all the responses!
My husband works at the hospital, and yes, they are shifting it over to a "Clinic" so no more in-patient activities. The 67th CSH there is being dissolved, most of those people are being moved elsewhere. So they will be paring down the staff a bit.
They are closing down Würzburg, Giebelstadt, Kitzingen, and a lot of people are leaving, which has made it quite difficult to meet others. We should be staying here until the hospital closes (year and a half or so? who knows), it will be interesting to see how it goes while closing things down.
We are homeschooling, we've made that decision. I am trying to find other children for my kids to play with, but that, for some reason, has been hard. The kids are doing soccer, we play outside a lot, but I think with most people leaving soon they are not as apt to "open up" as someone who knows they will be here longer.
Perhaps, or maybe I'm reading too much into it :)
This is my first time living on a military post, I am loving living in Germany, though, it is beautiful, especially now that the weather is so wonderful!

Hey there!
This is the first time I've been on this web site. My best friend in the states just hooked me up. I am living about 15 min from Grafenwoehr and 20 min from Vilseck. I've been in Bavaria for a year with my husband (Airforce) and 20 mo. old son Everett. I just had my second child-Arianna in March- a homebirth with a german midwife (hebame). I'm not sure how far you are from me but my looking at a map I'd say you're probably about 2 hrs away. Perhaps we can get some people together that are in Bavaria and meet at a somewhat centralized spot? I see that you are homeschooling which is awesome! I wonder if you have had a chance to check out any german kindergartens for your 5 yr old? They are really great here! By the way what does AP mean? Please let me know if you have any questions about the local culture- I may or may not be able to help.
As far as making friends- it has taken me a year to feel really welcomed and comfortable with most of the spouses here- give it time:) How long has your husband been in the service?

Hey i used to live in kitzingen on post with my husband and daughter. they where closing it down and they moved us to Ansbach.. we are living in katterbach on post. and its ok here. alot of green!!! and very boring. we dont like it here at all.. we are both from los angeles and we rather be in the states then over seas.. the px is big in wuerzburg but they dont have much of a selection in any thing. just in my opinion though.. we dont shop there alot because its a hour drive now and we didnt do alot of Clothing shopping either. we do it all by the net. since our taste of clothes is totaly diff then on the px.
i did hear they are closing it down sept or oct but then i heard 2008. they said they where going to close it and bring it down where we live and add new things. i was one of the last people who delivered at wuerzburg army hospital. i delivered via c-section may 25th and i had my second daughter.
Anyways, if u ever want to ask questions pm me.!:wink
